Chapter 166: Chapter 166: Roxanne, You Lied

Stella Thorne mentioned that she saw Roxanne Peyton and Silas Rowan get out of the same car.

Claire Mercer was a little surprised. "Are you sure you saw that right?"

"How could I be wrong? My eyes aren’t failing me. I’m sure of what I saw."

"Roxanne was wearing a short, orange floral dress, and Silas Rowan was in a white button-down shirt."

"If you don’t believe my eyes, we’ll just see what they’re wearing when they get here."

Then, Stella Thorne added conspiratorially.

"Don’t you think those two have been getting a little close lately?"

"The last time we had dinner at your place, they showed up together then, too."

"They claimed they just happened to run into each other by the elevators downstairs. What are the odds?"

"And today they show up in the same car. They must have planned it."

"Do you think they might be secretly dating behind our backs?"

Claire Mercer said, "I doubt it."

"Why not?" Stella Thorne began to lay out her case.

"It wouldn’t be all that surprising if they were actually together."

"Their families are well-matched, and in terms of social standing, they’re a perfect pair."

"Silas Rowan is the son of a powerful family in Rhonia, and Roxanne’s family influence in the city is nothing to scoff at."

"Besides, he’s handsome and she’s a beauty... Isn’t it perfectly normal for them to be attracted to each other?"

After hearing Stella Thorne’s analysis, Claire Mercer started to think she might have a point.

"I’ve been so busy with the competition lately that I really haven’t paid much attention to it."

"But now that you’ve laid it all out, I’d say it’s possible, though not very probable."

"But if we want to know if something is going on with them, we just have to see if they show up together in a bit."

"If they walk in together, I’d say there’s nothing fishy going on."

"After all, Silas might have just given Roxanne a lift. Their actions would be open and aboveboard, with nothing to hide."

"But if they deliberately come in separately, then I think they’re acting out of a guilty conscience."

Stella Thorne was thrilled. "Claire, I bet something’s going on between them and they’ll deliberately come in separately. What do you think?"

Claire Mercer replied, "I think they’ll probably come in together."

’After all, Roxanne’s type is the musical prodigy, like August Thorne.’

’And I think after the competition’s opening ceremony last week...’

’Roxanne even got August Thorne’s phone number and WeChat info.’

’For all I know, the two of them are already hitting it off.’

"Claire, how about we make a bet?"

"Okay. I bet there’s nothing going on, and they’ll probably come in together."

"I bet they’ll come in separately, one after the other..."

The two of them speculated on whether Roxanne Peyton and Silas Rowan would arrive together, and even made a bet on it.

Adrian Sutton, listening from the side, was completely engrossed, a faint smile playing on his lips.

About two minutes later, Roxanne Peyton found the private room and pushed the door open.

Seeing this, Stella Thorne raised her eyebrows at Claire Mercer.

Her look seemed to ask, ’See? Isn’t Roxanne wearing a short, orange floral dress?’

Claire Mercer gave her a look back, acknowledging that she had indeed seen correctly.

Then, Stella Thorne asked Roxanne Peyton with a smile.

"Oh, Roxanne, how come you came by yourself?"

"I was always coming alone," Roxanne Peyton said, clearing her throat. She then retorted, "Was I supposed to come with someone?"

Stella Thorne pressed with a grin, "Are you sure you came by yourself?"

Roxanne Peyton felt a little guilty and unnerved by her friend’s stare, but she stubbornly nodded anyway.

"Yes. Why do you ask?"

Stella Thorne burst out laughing, though she said, "It’s nothing, it’s nothing."

"It’s just that Silas Rowan isn’t here yet, so I thought you two might arrive together."

After finding a seat and sitting down, Roxanne Peyton took a sip of tea and retorted.

"Why would I ever come with him? I have no idea what you’re thinking."

Stella Thorne suppressed her laughter and also took a sip of tea.

Then she leaned over to whisper in Claire Mercer’s ear, "What do you think? Was I right or was I right?"

"Who knows, they probably got together while we were busy with the competition."

"You just said I must have misseen it, but Roxanne’s outfit is exactly as I described, down to the last detail."

"You just wait. When Silas Rowan gets here, I guarantee he’ll be wearing a white shirt today."

Seeing the two of them whispering to each other, she couldn’t tell what they were saying.

Roxanne Peyton asked, a little worried, "What are you two whispering about over there? You’re not talking trash about me, are you?"

"Why would we ever say anything bad about you?" Stella Thorne said nonchalantly.

"We ran into Scarlett Jewel on our way out today. Claire and I were just venting about her."

As soon as she heard Scarlett Jewel’s name, Roxanne Peyton’s suspicions of the two vanished.

"That bitch, Scarlett Jewel, was she giving Claire a hard time again?"

Stella Thorne nodded. "She advanced, so she came running over to me and Claire to show off."

"But Claire won two rounds in a row to advance directly."

"For someone who just barely scraped by to advance from the losers’ bracket, she sure has a lot of nerve showing off in front of Claire."

"I really don’t know what goes on in that woman’s head. I feel like there’s something wrong with her brain."

"That Scarlett Jewel is a real piece of work. She’s like a lingering ghost you can’t get rid of."

Just as they were speaking, the door to the private room was pushed open, and a figure in white appeared in the doorway.

It was Silas Rowan, and just as predicted, he was wearing a white shirt.

Stella Thorne shot another eyebrow-raise at Claire Mercer, smiling playfully.

Claire Mercer gave her a look that screamed, ’You’re amazing,’ and secretly gave her a thumbs-up.

The easy-going Roxanne Peyton completely missed this silent exchange between them.

However, Silas Rowan, who had just sat down beside Roxanne Peyton, keenly sensed that something was amiss.

He couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something subtle and strange in the way the first three arrivals were looking at him and Roxanne Peyton.

Especially the look Adrian Sutton was giving him—it was indescribably odd. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

It made him deeply uncomfortable, giving him an almost hair-raising feeling.

"What’s with that look?" Silas Rowan asked.

Adrian Sutton gave him a cryptic smile. "Figure it out yourself."

"What are you three plotting?" Silas Rowan continued to press.

Stella Thorne immediately shook her head like a rattle.

"Nothing! We weren’t plotting anything."

Roxanne Peyton was finally starting to catch on.

"Claire, Stella, were you two really talking about Scarlett Jewel just now?"

Stella Thorne nodded furiously. "Yes! Claire and I were just talking about how Scarlett Jewel was making a fool of herself."

"Oh, by the way, I just ordered eleven pounds of crayfish and some pickled pepper bullfrog."

Roxanne Peyton ignored Stella Thorne’s comment and continued to press, "Are you sure you weren’t talking about anything else?"

"Nope..." Stella Thorne shook her head, denying it. She still wanted to secretly observe Roxanne and Silas Rowan.

But Claire Mercer cut in, asking Roxanne Peyton, "Roxanne, are you sure you want to keep asking?"

Roxanne Peyton replied, "You two are whispering behind my back. Shouldn’t I be allowed to ask what it’s about?"

’Her two best friends were whispering secrets and leaving her out.’

’It left a bad taste in her mouth.’

’She couldn’t help but think about how the two of them were in the competition together, spending several hours with each other every day.’

’Maybe all this time together had made their relationship even closer.’

’To put it bluntly, she was just a little jealous.’

Seeing Roxanne Peyton’s unhappy pout, Claire Mercer couldn’t help but chuckle.

"Roxanne, you lied to us just now."
