Chapter 70: Pursuit

Nina gently patted Leah’s back.

"Where there is meeting, there will always be parting. Don’t be too sad. Perhaps one day, we’ll see each other again."

Though she spoke lightly, her own heart ached. A faint mist shimmered in her eyes.

"Mm..." Leah replied in a muffled voice, trying not to cry.

"Nina, everything’s packed. We’re ready to leave," Mino said as he walked over.

Nina slowly loosened her embrace and looked at Leah.

"I’m going now. Goodbye. Please say farewell to Bibi, Minnie, and Aji for me."

"Goodbye, Nina..."

Leah bit her lip hard, holding back the tears threatening to spill.

Nina gave her one last reluctant wave, then climbed onto Mino’s back with Yinny in her arms. She turned for a final glance at Leah before patting Mino’s shoulder.

They left.

Leah stood there watching Nina’s figure grow smaller and smaller until it vanished entirely. Only then did she sink to her knees, hugging herself as sobs broke free.

Nina... goodbye. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

After crying her heart out, Leah wiped her swollen eyes and went to find Bibi and Minnie. She handed them the crystal bracelets and told them about Nina’s departure—explaining that Tribal Chief Tali had intended to harm her, which was why Nina hadn’t come to say farewell in person.

Bibi and Minnie clutched the bracelets and cried as well.

Finally, Leah went to find Aji.

Aji took the yellow crystal pendant in his hands.

"Nina... has already left?"

"Yes," Leah said softly. "She said she was happy to have met you as a friend. She asked me to say goodbye—and that this crystal will help you cultivate."

"I understand. Thank you."

After thanking her, Aji turned and left.

He walked to Nina’s now-empty stone house. Inside, the room felt hollow and silent. He sat down on the stone bed, leaning back against the wall, closing his eyes as if trying to hold onto the last traces of her presence.

He didn’t know how long he sat there before finally standing and walking away.

Back at his own stone dwelling, Aji moved all his belongings into Miye’s room.

He placed a beast-hide pouch in front of her.

"Mother, these are all the beast crystals I’ve saved over the years. I’m leaving everything to you."

Then he knelt.

"I’ve decided to forcibly leave the family and go out to train. I may never return."

In the beast world, when a male left to train, it meant facing countless dangers. Many never came back. It was a path of no return.

Miye was horrified.

"Aji! Why suddenly? Are you truly going to abandon your mother?"

"Yes. I’ve made my decision." He bowed deeply. "Mother, thank you for raising me. Over the years, I’ve repaid what I could. From now on, I want to live for myself."

He rose and walked toward the door without hesitation.

There was nothing left here worth staying for.

Miye clutched her chest and groaned, attempting her usual trick to make him stop.

But this time, Aji did not look back.

She stared at the pile of belongings on the ground and slumped weakly against the bed.

She knew her obedient, filial son would never return.

Outside, Aji gripped the pendant at his chest and looked up at the sky. For a fleeting moment, he seemed to see Nina’s familiar smiling face.

Nina... I hope we meet again. And next time, I’ll be strong enough to protect you.

With firm resolve, he stepped into the unknown, gradually disappearing into the night.

Tribal Chief Tali soon received news of Nina’s departure.

"What? Nina has left the tribe? Are you certain?" Tali’s face darkened as Been delivered the report.

How could she leave so suddenly? He hadn’t even finalized his arrangements. This had caught him completely off guard.

"Yes. We checked her stone house. Everything was gone," Been said.

"Then why wasn’t I informed earlier? Didn’t I tell you to have beastmen watch them?"

"They were seen leaving, but the guards thought they were just going out as usual. Someone followed at a distance, but they were quickly shaken off. When they didn’t return by nightfall, we checked the house—and found it empty."

"A bunch of useless fools!" Tali slammed his fist against the table. "Send men to pursue them immediately! If the rain continues, their tracks will vanish. I’ll arrange other matters and catch up soon."

Fortunately, today’s rain had been light. Their trail might still be traceable.

For the sake of powerful offspring, he absolutely could not let Nina escape.

"Yes."

Been led a group to pursue.

After settling tribal matters, Tali hurried to a forest on the outskirts of the territory to meet several unfamiliar beastmen.

"You’re Ghost Wolf?"

Before him stood a massive male with a scar across his face. Behind him were several fierce-looking warriors.

"That’s right," Ghost Wolf said with a mocking grin. "You’re the one who wants to make a deal? You do know who we are—and our rules?"

"I do. You’re wandering beasts."

Tali handed him a hide pouch.

"This is the deposit."

Ghost Wolf weighed the pouch and raised an eyebrow.

"You’ve got guts, making a deal with us."

He opened it and nodded. "The amount checks out. What do you want?"

"I need you to help deal with three males. One of them is above sixth rank."

Tali knew of Yanai and Sal’s existence but not their exact strength.

Ghost Wolf thought briefly. He himself was close to eighth rank, and several of his men were seventh. In this wild region, few could match them.

"A sixth-rank beastman? That’s nothing," he scoffed. "Fine. Take us to them."

"They slipped away unexpectedly. We’ll need to track them."

Ghost Wolf frowned impatiently. "Troublesome."

Tali smiled stiffly. "My apologies. They’re traveling with a female. They can’t have gone far."

At the mention of a female, Ghost Wolf’s interest sharpened.

"Alright. Move. My time is valuable."

They followed the markings Been had left behind.

However, Mino and the others had laid false trails along the way. It wouldn’t be easy to catch them.

After traveling for a full day, Nina and the others finally stopped at a mountain cave once night fell.

Mino lowered Nina carefully.

"Rest here. We’ll clear the cave first."

"Alright."

Nina set down the other eggs and took out an insulated bottle, milk powder, and a baby bottle to prepare milk for Yinny.

Yanai stayed nearby to help.

"Yinny didn’t sleep at all today. Aren’t you tired?" Nina asked gently.

It was his first day outside the egg. The world was too fascinating. He kept peeking around from her arms, wide-eyed.

Yinny shook his little head, blue eyes sparkling.

"Wah-oo!"

Not sleepy. Yinny is happy!

Nina smiled and stroked his head.

"Come drink your milk."

Yinny suckled contentedly.

The cave was soon cleaned. Since cooking would be inconvenient, Mino and the others decided to grill meat for dinner.

Yinny sniffed eagerly, nose twitching.

So fragrant! So fragrant!

Nina tapped his little nose playfully.

"You don’t even have teeth yet. When you grow some, Mother will let you eat meat."

Yinny nodded obediently and snuggled into her arms.

Mother smells even better than meat.

They traveled another full day.

At noon on the third day, while they were eating, a group of beastmen suddenly emerged and surrounded them.
