Chapter 77: Rogue beast

Mino sensed his clansmen drawing near. He walked to Nina’s side and lowered his voice.

"Nina, I have something to take care of. You go on ahead. I’ll catch up shortly."

He intended to draw his tribe away from her.

Nina felt a flicker of confusion but didn’t press him. "Alright. Be careful."

"I will."

With that, Mino turned and sped off in another direction.

It was nearly dusk before he finally shook off the Spirit Cat tribe and rejoined Nina and the others.

As night approached, they found a cave suitable for resting. Mino and the others busied themselves cleaning it and preparing dinner.

Meanwhile, Nina sat with Yinny and Didi in her arms. She took out the primal stones.

"Little pearl," she murmured softly, "go ahead and eat them."

The spirit pearl glowed brightly, radiating a warm light that enveloped the two stones. Under its brilliance, the stones gradually dissolved into nothingness.

As the pearl absorbed their energy, Nina felt a surge within herself—her ability strengthening rapidly.

Her eyes widened with delight.

She hadn’t expected to benefit alongside the pearl.

When the light faded, the stones were completely gone. Nina sensed that her ability had risen an entire tier—now well into the fourth level. The pearl itself looked clearer, more luminous.

A worthwhile purchase indeed.

The night passed peacefully.

The next morning, just after Nina woke, Sal entered carrying breakfast.

Whenever it wasn’t raining, they cooked outside the cave to keep the smoke from bothering Nina and the cubs.

Today, Sal wore an extremely thin black garment made of some unknown material.

He placed the food on the small table beside her.

"Nina, breakfast is ready."

She sat down to eat. Sal deliberately stood before her and tugged lightly at his collar.

"It seems a bit hot today."

Nina glanced up.

Through the thin black fabric, the sculpted lines of his chest and abdomen were faintly visible—half concealed, half revealed—creating a hazy, tantalizing effect.

Her cheeks warmed.

She glanced again.

Was this... the legendary allure of black silk?

Nearby, Yanai nudged Mino with his elbow. "What’s he doing?"

Mino sneered. "Showing off."

That damned leopard. So many tricks. Should he get similar clothes? Nina seemed rather fond of the view.

Yanai finally understood. Ah. Seduction.

He squinted thoughtfully at Sal’s clothing.

After breakfast, they continued their journey.

Didi nestled in Nina’s arms, wide-eyed and curious. Having only just hatched, the world fascinated him. He chirped constantly, chatting with Yinny.

Along the way, Sal noticed a signal from Ghost Wolf. He told Nina he needed to step away briefly.

She nodded.

Sal met Ghost Wolf and the others.

"Boss, the matter of Chief Tali has been handled," Black Flame reported.

He described the chief’s fate upon returning to his tribe. Sal listened and nodded in satisfaction.

Then he recalled Dahn’s warning about mutated beast packs.

"Follow at a distance," Sal instructed. "If Nina is ever in danger, step in immediately."

"Yes, Boss."

They answered in unison, though inwardly astonished.

The Boss truly cared for that female.

Sal soon returned to Nina’s side.

"Nina," he began eagerly, "a friend just told me more about Chief Tali."

Nina frowned slightly. Hadn’t Sal said the chief was already dealt with? She had assumed he meant killed.

Sal recounted Chief Tali’s miserable end.

As she listened, Nina’s brows knit faintly. "Sal... are you hiding something from me?"

He froze.

He hadn’t expected her to be so perceptive.

Under her clear, luminous gaze, he found himself unable to lie.

Should he tell her now?

If he confessed he was a wandering beast, would she drive him away? But if he continued to conceal it and she discovered the truth later, would she hate him even more?

The memory of past mistakes made his chest tighten with fear.

He lowered his head, fingers clutching at his animal-skin skirt, breathing unevenly.

Nina did not press for more. She wanted honesty, but it had to be given freely.

After a long internal struggle, Sal finally raised his head.

"Nina... actually, I..." He swallowed, gathering courage. "I’m a wandering rogue beast."

The words seemed to hang in the air like a verdict awaiting execution.

"You’re a rogue beast?" Nina’s eyes widened in surprise.

"I am the City Lord of Demon Abyss City—the highest leader of the wandering beasts."

Sal dropped to his knees.

"I’m sorry, Nina. I didn’t mean to deceive you. I was just afraid—afraid you would drive me away. I thought... I thought I’d wait until you accepted me before telling you."

He shuffled closer on his knees. "Nina, please don’t be angry. Don’t send me away. I’ll do anything."

Nina bit her lip softly, keeping silent.

The leader of wandering beasts? And she had bathed him, cuddled him, treated him like a pet—and he hadn’t crushed her in retaliation?

Instead, he had knelt and apologized.

Was the temperament of a wandering beast leader truly so gentle?

Any other wandering beast might have ended her life long ago.

She felt torn.

Should she keep him? Could she accept a rogue beast?

Yet Sal was nothing like the brutal figures described in rumors.

Seeing her silence, Sal’s fear deepened.

"Nina, I may be a wandering beast, but I am not one who slaughters innocents or commits evil. I kill only those who try to harm me. I have never bullied the weak."

Nina lowered her gaze, absently stroking Yinny and Didi as she thought.

Behind them, Ghost Wolf and the others watched in stunned disbelief.

Their Boss was kneeling before a female?

They nearly dropped to their knees themselves from shock.

Sal tugged gently at the hem of Nina’s clothing, voice low and pleading. "Please believe me. I won’t hide anything from you again."

He knew most females despised rogue beasts.

But he could not bear to leave her.

Nina’s heart softened at the sight.

Ghost Wolf and the others could hardly endure witnessing this. To them, Sal had always been powerful and proud—standing above all.

Yet now he knelt humbly before a single female.

Unable to stand it any longer, they stepped forward and dropped to their knees as well.

"Honorable Female," Ghost Wolf said earnestly, "the City Lord is not a cruel wandering beast. He has forbidden us from harming innocent tribes. We may not be noble beasts, but we have never looted tribes or forced females."

"Yes, Honorable Female," another added. "We were abandoned as children. Becoming wandering beasts was not our choice."

"The City Lord has saved our lives."

They spoke one after another in Sal’s defense.

Nina recognized them at once.

"Aren’t you the ones who helped Chief Tali before?"
