After Prison I Rushed into Marriage with a Comatose Tycoon-Chapter 103: Shane Lockwood in Critical Condition
The bell rang, signaling the end of the workday.
Crystal Harrison walked over. "Eliza, want to go for a drink?"
"I can’t. I have something tonight," Eliza Sutton declined.
She had moved out of Seacliff Manor and into The Lumina Gardens. Emmett was living with her, so she needed to get home early.
Dulcie Vaughn happened to be passing by and overheard them. "Crystal, that’s so thoughtless of you. You know perfectly well that Eliza is busy designing the young lady’s formal gown. How could you even think about having fun with her? Aren’t you just holding her back?"
Eliza Sutton turned to look at Dulcie Vaughn, her brow furrowing slightly.
Dulcie flashed a smile at Eliza. "Designer Sutton, no need to thank me for speaking up on your behalf. I know there are some things you can’t say yourself. It’s nothing, really. Everyone’s just trying to climb the ladder."
Crystal Harrison froze, then quickly apologized. "Eliza, I’m so sorry! I completely forgot about that. You should go on home then."
As Crystal spoke, she started to leave.
Eliza Sutton grabbed Crystal’s wrist. "I really do have something tonight. There’s a child waiting for me at home. I have to take care of him for the next few days."
"It’s really okay. I know you’re busy." Crystal said this, but her expression brightened considerably. "We’ll go out once you’re free."
Eliza agreed immediately. She then turned to Dulcie Vaughn. "Designer Vaughn, I must say I’m surprised. I had no idea you could read my mind and speak on my behalf."
Dulcie Vaughn, of course, caught the sarcasm. She quickly said, "I was just trying to be nice. I was afraid it would be awkward for you to say no."
Eliza replied bluntly, "Then please, Designer Vaughn, take back your kindness. I don’t need it. In fact, if I’m not careful, I might just misunderstand and think you have ulterior motives. That wouldn’t be good, would it?"
After saying her piece, Eliza pulled Crystal away, ignoring the ugly look on Dulcie’s face.
Once they were out of the office, Crystal gave Eliza a thumbs-up. "You’ve got guts, standing up to Designer Vaughn like that."
"I only did it because I was in the right." As Eliza spoke, her phone rang.
It was a call from Emmett Lockwood.
Eliza said a quick goodbye to Crystal and headed out, answering the call as she walked.
Before she could speak, Emmett Lockwood’s tearful voice came through the phone.
"Mom, Dad’s throwing up blood! They’re trying to save him now!"
Eliza felt as if a thousand bombs had gone off in her head. For a moment, her mind went completely blank. A chill shot up her spine, and it felt as though an invisible hand was viciously squeezing her heart. In that instant, she even forgot to breathe.
"Eliza, what’s wrong?" Crystal asked, confused, seeing Eliza suddenly stop in her tracks.
Eliza didn’t answer. She snapped back to reality and bolted from the Lockwood Group building like a gust of wind.
"Where is he?" Eliza’s voice was steady, but her tone was trembling uncontrollably.
"The hospital. Mr. Ellington said Dad is in the emergency room at People’s Hospital."
Eliza hung up and scrambled into her car.
The next second, the car shot forward like an arrow released from a bow.
It was rush hour, and traffic was gridlocked everywhere. An accident up ahead had brought the road to a complete standstill.
Eliza was frantic. Spotting a delivery guy on an electric scooter nearby, she immediately called out, "Hey, man! Can I trade you this BMW for your scooter?"
The delivery guy said, "Miss, I know you’re rich, but that’s not a funny joke."
"I’m not joking. I really want to trade."
The delivery guy didn’t say anything, just stared at Eliza like she was insane.
Seeing that he wasn’t going to agree, Eliza grew even more anxious. Then, an idea struck her. "How about this? I’ll pay you to make a delivery for me. A thousand-dollar tip for this one trip."
With that, she pulled out a wad of cash and stuffed it into his hand without counting.
The delivery guy’s face lit up instantly. "What am I delivering?"
"Me." Eliza pushed open her car door, got out, and hopped onto the back of the scooter. "You’re delivering me to People’s Hospital. Now."
Twenty minutes later, Eliza arrived at the emergency room.
Mrs. Lockwood, Walter Ellington, and Erik Irvine were all there.
Mrs. Lockwood, her face pale, stared at the doors to the emergency room, her frail body trembling uncontrollably.
Eliza rushed over and asked urgently, "What happened? How could Shane Lockwood suddenly end up in the ER? He was fine!"
On the way there, Eliza had already turned this question over in her mind hundreds of times.
Shane Lockwood’s health was terrible. The toxins built up in his system meant his legs would never fully recover, and his body was extremely weak.
But she had treated him more than once before. Although he couldn’t be completely cured in such a short time, there was no way he should have suddenly become this critically ill.
Erik Irvine shook his head. "I don’t know. He met with a client this afternoon, and afterward President Lockwood said his chest felt a little tight and he wanted to rest. I was driving him back when he suddenly started vomiting blood on the way."
Just then, the doors to the ER opened and a nurse came out.
The nurse said anxiously, "This is a critical condition notice. A family member needs to sign it as soon as possible."
When Mrs. Lockwood saw the notice, she couldn’t catch her breath and fainted.
"Oh no, how can she sign if she’s fainted!" the nurse exclaimed, also frantic. "Is there any other family here?"
Walter Ellington said, "Sister-in-law, you have to be the one to sign it!"
The nurse immediately handed her the critical condition notice.
Eliza Sutton was no stranger to these forms.
When she was studying medicine under her master, she had helped treat plenty of critical patients.
Eliza had always been calm, but as the form was held out to her, her mind buzzed and went completely blank.
"Hurry and sign," the nurse urged, pressing a pen into Eliza’s hand.
Eliza mechanically signed her name. The nurse took the form and hurried away.
"Sister-in-law, we’ve got it here. Please take Auntie home for now." Walter Ellington started to hand the unconscious Mrs. Lockwood over to Eliza.
Eliza didn’t take her. Snapping out of her daze, she spun around and left, moving so fast it was like a ghost was chasing her.
Walter Ellington’s brow furrowed. "What is Eliza Sutton doing? How can she be thinking about other things at a time like this?"
"The Mistress may have her own plans."
Walter snorted. "She’s just a bride brought in for good luck. What plans could she have? I bet she thinks Lockwood is going to die and she’s rushing to transfer his assets. Women like her who marry for money are all unreliable!"
Erik Irvine remained silent, listening to Walter’s complaints. His eyes were fixed on the emergency room, praying that Shane Lockwood would be safe.
For a moment, the atmosphere in the hallway became incredibly heavy.
After leaving the ER, Eliza Sutton took out her phone and dialed a number she knew by heart.
RING... RING... RING...
While waiting for the call to connect, it felt like her heart was about to leap out of her chest.
Finally, the call went through.
"Hello."
Hearing the familiar voice on the other end, Eliza said immediately, "Master, I need to ask you for a favor."
