Chapter 109: Chapter 109: Boil Him

Eliza Sutton looked over and saw Dulcie Vaughn approaching with a few junior designers.

The mocking remark had come from one of the recently hired designers.

Crystal Harrison flared up instantly. "What did you say?"

The designer feigned innocence. "Did I say something wrong? I don’t think so. On her résumé, Designer Sutton’s profile says five years in prison and zero work experience. To not only get into the Lockwood Group but also become the chief designer with a record like that... I’m truly impressed."

Every word of that long-winded speech dripped with sarcasm. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Just as Crystal Harrison was about to retort, Eliza Sutton stopped her. "There’s no need to get into a petty argument."

Just then, a figure rushed forward, their hand slicing through the air in a slap aimed straight for Eliza Sutton’s face.

Eliza Sutton caught the person’s wrist. Turning her head, she saw a disheveled Brenda Preston.

She was a little surprised. "Manager Preston, what do you think you’re doing? Attacking a subordinate isn’t a very good habit to have."

Brenda Preston gritted her teeth. "Eliza Sutton, you’ve got some nerve! You actually dared to lock me—"

Brenda Preston stopped mid-sentence.

Eliza Sutton raised an eyebrow at Brenda Preston. "I did what to you?"

Brenda Preston didn’t dare say it.

’It’s perfectly normal for me to want to put Eliza Sutton in her place. I can’t stand her.’

’What superior doesn’t discipline their subordinates?’

’But forcing a subordinate to do a full day of hard labor in the warehouse and then trying to lock them in overnight definitely counts as workplace bullying. If I get labeled as a bully, it’ll be bad for me.’

’Especially since I was the one who ended up locked in the warehouse all night.’

’If that got out, my credibility in the design department would be shot.’

"Eliza Sutton, don’t get cocky. Now that things have gotten to this point, your backer has fallen. You’re finished."

Eliza Sutton feigned confusion. "Backer? Who’s my backer? You can’t possibly mean President Lockwood, can you?"

Brenda Preston frowned. She hadn’t expected Eliza Sutton to bring up Shane Lockwood so casually.

Eliza Sutton continued, "Manager Preston, you’re assaulting, accusing, and intimidating me, a designer in your own department. Are you so certain that with the Lockwood family now leaderless, you can do whatever you please and call all the shots? If that’s the case, I can only say I’m disappointed. I really thought, from the way you’re always calling him ’Shane,’ that your loyalty to President Lockwood was unwavering. I never expected you’d have a change of heart the moment he ran into trouble."

Eliza Sutton let out a long sigh. "It’s a good thing President Lockwood saw you for who you are and wasn’t deceived."

"What nonsense are you spouting? When did I have a change of heart?! The only one in my heart is Shane!"

"Manager Preston, don’t be angry. You don’t need to pay any mind to what Eliza Sutton says. This woman is an expert at spouting nonsense to confuse people."

The speaker was none other than Fabian Lockwood.

Fabian Lockwood limped over, his head still wrapped in gauze. He looked a pitiful sight, but when his eyes landed on Eliza Sutton, his gaze was as sharp as a dagger.

Reminded by Fabian, Brenda Preston did indeed calm down. She sneered, "Designer Sutton, you’re quite bold. The Chairman gave a clear order that no one is to discuss President Lockwood’s situation, yet you dare to run your mouth. Are you openly disrespecting the board of directors?"

It had to be said, Brenda Preston’s remark was quite clever.

She knew how to use the Chairman to pressure her.

Too bad she didn’t have much of a brain.

Eliza Sutton said calmly, "In that case, why don’t you accompany me to the boardroom, Manager Preston? We can let the directors judge the matter for themselves."

Of course, Brenda Preston didn’t dare.

Her actions the day before hadn’t been particularly discreet. If there were a real investigation, she would bear the greater responsibility, and she would be the one to suffer the consequences.

Brenda Preston’s face hardened. "Eliza Sutton, do you think just because you can sketch a few designs, you’re hot stuff? That everyone has to worship the ground you walk on? Dream on!"

After she spoke, Brenda Preston’s gaze swept over the onlookers. "What are you all gawking at?" she snapped. "Get lost! Don’t any of you want to work?"

The crowd of onlookers immediately dispersed.

Brenda Preston shot Eliza Sutton a glare and left.

Once inside her office, Brenda Preston couldn’t contain her rage and smashed all the decorations.

Fabian Lockwood stood to the side, remarking with a nonchalant drawl, "As expected of a beauty. You’re even gorgeous when you’re throwing a tantrum."

Brenda Preston’s brow furrowed. "Fabian, give me a timeline. When can I finally get rid of Eliza Sutton?!"

Fabian Lockwood said, "Don’t be so impatient. Eliza Sutton is a grasshopper in late autumn—her days are numbered. When the time comes, you can do whatever you want to her to blow off steam. We have to make our great beauty Brenda happy, after all."

Brenda Preston snapped, "Then make it quick! I can’t stand it for another day!"

Fabian Lockwood gave a mock salute. "As you command."

「In the break room.」

In the middle of her work, Eliza Sutton went to the break room to get some water. The door shut behind her.

Eliza Sutton turned to see Fabian Lockwood walk in. She averted her gaze and ignored him.

Fabian Lockwood couldn’t stand being treated like he was invisible. He sat down in a chair, jiggling his leg. "Eliza Sutton, you see now, don’t you? Here at the Lockwood Group, if you don’t have someone protecting you, any random person can mock you, and anyone with a little power can bully you. Don’t tell me this is the kind of life you want to live."

"Right." Eliza’s single word was spoken with absolute conviction.

Fabian was momentarily speechless, but he quickly started laughing again. Shaking his bandaged head, he said confidently, "Sister-in-law, what’s the point of being so stubborn? If you ask me, a woman should know what’s good for her. There’s nothing wrong with latching onto a powerful backer when you have the chance."

As he spoke, Fabian couldn’t resist reaching out to feel Eliza Sutton’s waist.

Hers was the very definition of a slender waist—so slim a single hand could encircle it.

Fabian had been coveting it for who knows how long.

’A waist like that must be incredible in bed,’ he was always thinking.

Eliza slapped his wandering hand away. "It seems your last beating was too light," she said coldly. "Do you need me to give you a reminder?"

Fabian’s expression froze, then twisted into a furious snarl. "Eliza Sutton, be smug while you can! One day, I’ll have you kneeling at my feet and singing a song of surrender! For your own good, I suggest you start practicing now!"

"Thanks, but I think you’re the one who needs to start practicing." Eliza’s reminder was genuine.

Unfortunately, all Fabian Lockwood heard was a provocation, and his face contorted with anger.

"Fine, Eliza Sutton! You just wait." With that, Fabian Lockwood slammed the door and limped away.

Eliza Sutton’s gaze returned to the room, but her brow remained furrowed.

’Life after prison has been good, but having a fly like him constantly buzzing in my ear is incredibly annoying.’

Eliza Sutton made a decision. She took out a burner phone and composed a text to Erik Irvine.

...

When Eliza Sutton arrived at the sanatorium, Erik Irvine immediately greeted her. "Doctor, the medicinal herbs and the large cauldron you requested are ready. What are your instructions?"

"Put Shane Lockwood in, turn on the heat, and cook him."
