After Surviving the Apocalypse, I Built a City in Another World-Chapter 1265: Cannons and Shields
He had heard about what had happened during the previous war, and obviously, Alterra still had the confidence to make such bold moves with slaves back then.
Now that they were a legitimate Town, they could no longer do that.
It felt satisfying to pick down this arrogant territory by a notch.
That said, the vanguard slaves were locals. After all, they became a Town because they weren't idiots who'd send precious elementalists as meat shields.
Quite a few Terran territories had fallen during the past few months.
This meant that there were Elementalist Slaves scattered around this region, and there was even a subtle 'hunting' of them that had begun.
With his guidance, Basset Town, in fact, managed to secure hundreds of them.
Anyway, more and more aborigine territories had been closing in on the now-called 'Terran Region', a segmented place with territories of Terran origins, but were not necessarily working together or owned by Terrans anymore.
He remembered when he entered a partnership with Basset Town to improve his life. He even tried to gain leverage with his strategies to gain freedom—at least from the disgusting duties he had been thrust into—but he was beaten up instead.
In the end, he could only strike a deal to help him level up, and he had reached level 21 after the past couple of harsh trainings in a Town. This was already incredible progress, superior even to Alterra's more powerful guards. However, it was not enough for Fargo, who had been trying to catch up with Garan, though to no avail.
His eyes turned red as he watched his side reach the walls, and—as they expected—
BANG!!
Fargo's eyes darkened. The cannons are here!
But his eyes widened when he realized there were a few of them activated at the same time—and in all parts of the territory.
BANG!!
BANG!!
BANG!!
He watched as several people were smashed and exploded every time a black ball landed.
Fargo gritted his teeth. It seemed like Alterra made a lot more than they thought.
Fargo wanted to curse at the mere sight of cannons. It wasn't that he hadn't tried developing those things but after various experiments, the number of people who died in failed attempts became too much.
He succeeded with the crossbow after many weeks, even months, but the cannon was beyond his capability, even as a former terrorist lord.
Building the cannons—or even just creating gunpowder— was not as straightforward as one would think, even if they did know the previous methodologies. Even if one had extensive knowledge of weapons, they might still not succeed in Xeno, and this was what happened to Fargo.
It wasn't even limited to gunpowder; he also wanted to develop various poisons, other explosives, and so on. Not long after he gained a position, he hired various Terran experts to develop 'modern' things and forced them to create good weapons if they wanted to keep their lives.
At the time, he thought, Alterra didn't have all the experts!
However, even the expert pharmacists and chemists he hired ended up either exploding or poisoning themselves to death! Those useless idiots!
Even at this time, Fargo was blaming everyone else for these failures.
In fact, the cannons took time to develop even in Alterra. Experts like Jake, Brandon, Eugene, and Kimura all worked together to create the prototype and its current improved versions.
The materials in Xeno were very different and even the slightest aberration could have very different effects. For such dangerous weapons, Alterra mobilized materials experts and dedicated a math team—along with their calculators and computers—to help out the weapons team.
What did Fargo have? Arrogant aborigine weaponsmiths who had closed minds, as well as terrified Terran experts who didn't have access to the equipment they were used to having.
The safety measures the Research Lab implemented for these experiments were no joke, and when Fargo's experiments killed a precious Class C weaponsmith, the entire project was stalled to a halt.
That was also the day he was deemed OK to use in bed—by multiple disgusting men—to 'maximize his worth'. Every time he recalled the humiliation, his heart felt like it was being burned in acid.
As such, all the failures had become his obsessions, too, and he became determined to hold the technologies in his hands—one way or another.
The formulas for these things were simply different here in Xeno. If they took over Alterra, then they'd receive those, too!
BANG!
He was pulled back to the present by the sound of more cannon shots landing on his side. He saw that all portions of the wall had a few.
However, he didn't go to war with Alterra unprepared. He might not be able to create cannons yet, but that didn't mean he didn't make countermeasures.
He turned to the side.

"Bring out the shells!" He yelled at the side and the aborigine nodded, taking out a large conch-like thing from his space and blew it.
A few minutes later, the mobs made way to various siege shields on wheels. They were large, at least a few meters high and even larger in width, each big enough to shield dozens of people.
They came directly from the arrays and were passed to different parts of the territory. It naturally wasn't practical to spread themselves too thin, so they chose a few places to attack and send these shells.
These were siege shields specially designed to handle the force of cannons. He did have some Terran engineers, at least, and designing these things wasn't dangerous so they were still alive.
They only had access to wood and metals, but they managed to do it. At the very least, it was strong enough to handle several shots from the average Level 30.
BANG!
BANG!
The mobs squeezed to the back of these tilted shields as they could, somehow protecting them from cannons, eventually reaching the area just below the walls.
There were dozens of siege shields in several areas, and they also had dedicated teams back in the territory to keep producing them.
The shields were shaped in a way that even if they were right below the walls, their backs wouldn't be exposed. And if they were side by side, it would create an even wider area of protection.
Interestingly, because they were hidden, the sentries were not activated, either.
Of course, there were still idiots who decided it was wise to push others so they could have space underneath it. However, no one bothered with them anymore.
For the most part, the main controllers of the shields were slaves, so they followed Fargo's formation to a tee. When the aborigines saw how well it worked, they had no choice but to follow.
More and more shields neared the walls, and soon their people would be able to mob specific sectors.
The strategy was to create a pathway of sorts accessible to their fighters via a couple of gaps. This way, their sides, as well as a portion of the area above them, were guarded—even against sentries—letting them create a focused point of attack.
The fact that the walls' battlements had limited width, and therefore had limited guards per square meters, was a great advantage to them.
Fargo's eyes sharpened.
Don't think you're winning this one, Alterra!
