After Surviving the Apocalypse, I Built a City in Another World-Chapter 1817: The Cold is Over (Part 1)
Like the Extreme heat, although there were signs of changing temperature, the sudden spike or the palpable change in temperature was relatively sudden.
For example, back in the Extreme Heat the temperature lowered bit by bit—by very little, almost undetectable—a couple of days before the end. But when it ended completely, it was like the weather just suddenly changed one morning.
Extreme Cold was the same. Starting a few days prior, the temperature increased by about one degree every day, but then it suddenly normalized, increasing by 50 or so celsius in one go.
And what would happen when meters-deep of snow suddenly melted?
Flooding, of course.
People who were walking along the thick blankets of snow would be carried by the strong waters in the span of a few hours.
The real threat was the movement of water, however. Water on its own did not cause the major disasters. It was the speed of their movement—the momentum.
Whether it was the water moving from mountains or water running to the lowest areas, these were the most dangerous.
This was a normal sight all over the world, with people and property getting swept over someplace, or certain areas completely flooded.
Alterra wasn’t as affected, fortunately, though there still were incidents. One, they had cleared a lot of snow during the cold itself, so the pile up wasn’t too bad.
Another was because while they were not at the peak of the mountain, they weren’t in basins either.
They also had sufficient easements and parks along the rivers, so flood should not affect them too strongly even if the river suddenly widened.
The river at some point did widen to nearly twice its width, so some property was flooded. However, it wasn’t anything that’d destroy the buildings, just a bit of inconvenience. And because the rest of the territory was fine, it wasn’t difficult to find places to stay temporarily.
That said, the water from higher elevations flooded the roads, causing some people to be swept away.
For example, people who opened the door without thinking, or people who were heading somewhere else when the sudden temperature shift happened.
There were also some who had noticed that it was not as cold and headed out, only to be greeted by melting ice a few moments later.
Fortunately, the majority of those outside were strong people around level 20 and above, because most people around level 10 were strictly confined in their homes, their cellars, or in evacuation centers.
At the same time, the number of people out wasn’t exactly few either. This was because the change happened midday, when everyone was awake and the strongmen wanted to stretch muscles.
Alterra’s heat packs and coats were so good that people, after a certain level, could actually find it comfortable going out mid-freeze.
They were also the first to notice the change in temperature and they announced it well. And the news spread indeed, though some celebrated prematurely, particularly outside of Alterra, whose citizens might not have been warned properly or had forgotten some details from the previous cold disaster.
This included some people who didn’t have guards, and some weren’t even particularly strong. The flood wasn’t instantaneous, and there was about an hour or so of warmth and peace.
Hence, many people hurried outside to celebrate, only to be swept away—literally. Even Alterra had quite a few of these idiots.
Many of them weren’t unaware of the floods, either, just that they thought there’d be ample warning and they could take the time to feel the heat first.
It was just that they underestimated the power of water. Even a foot deep of rapid water could imbalance the average fighter.
Fortunately, Alterra’s guards were trained in disaster relief and were prepared for various scenarios including floods. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Some of the guards here were Obi and Leez.
Using their superior levels, they could easily jump a few meters, unbothered by the unscalable attributes of the buildings. With their skills, they could rescue people getting flooded, jump to a balcony, and repeat the process.
Leez looked at her arms, each one carrying two goblins each. She jumped over a few floating things, including a few trunks and wooden parcels, to the nearest balcony.
One time, she even had a few hanging on her back and shoulders, rescuing half a dozen at once.
The little green ones were really carefree, too, giggling while she was flying around to put them to safety.
They even made disappointed ’aww’ sounds when she already landed and let them go.
Goblins in Alterra sure were different.
"THANK YOU SIR LEEZ!"
"HANDSOME LEEZ!"
"VERY MANLY EVEN IF YOU’RE SMALL."
"Eh? Is Leez a man—ow!"
Goblins had a special sixth sense, so many adults could actually tell Leez was a girl. But they were servile by instinct and never said anything unnecessary at all, which Leez was thankful for.
That said, a part of her did want things to be revealed. It was just that... she had been lying her whole life. How easy would it be to change? And what if her friends hated her?
What if that person hated her?
Leez shook those thoughts for now and continued with her job of rescuing people.
Fortunately, the average level of Alterrans was not too low, so as long as they were rescued quick enough, a bit of flood wouldn’t kill them.
Someone with a high level (Luis) even floated about on loose planks, saying he was in a water park.
Of course, he was still doing his job. He looked around for any hands reaching out the surface, and he actually found one.
When he did, he’d grab their hands and throw them up, using a good part of his strength to throw them high enough, like to a random balcony.
It was very much like catching people being flushed to the river, but they had to do it before they got too close.
The challenge was when the slopes were high and the velocity of the water was fast. To Luis, it could’ve been a waterslide. Sadly, there were still people to rescue.
It was just that this time, it was a rather big mass, and was therefore a bit more difficult to lift up though.
Glurg, glurg, glurg—
"Ohhh!" the man gasped, face pale from fear and asphyxiation.
Luis’ eyes twitched. "Baron?!"
