After Surviving the Apocalypse, I Built a City in Another World-Chapter 1823: Spar after the Cold
On the queue, they encountered Toktok and Angelo. They were married before the cold wave and it seemed like there was good news, though she was too early in her pregnancy so there were no bumps yet. 1
The groups greeted each other, with Toktok using sign language and Linlin—always the scholar—easily communicated with her in her language. Her husband, Angelo, was still learning with the improved memory upon upgrade, his progress was pretty good.
It was only Oslo, who hadn’t really considered studying sign language, who was unaware about what they were talking, er, signing about.
The only ’sign language’ he learned from Alterrans were those used in battles to communicate with each other without speaking, especially useful while fighting enemies and stealth jobs.
This had been one of the reasons for their impressive teamwork. Interestingly, many of their signs might be some conventions in the terran military, but some were also stemmed from sign language.
Seeing full conversations with it sparked his curiosity. Should he get Linlin to teach him later?
Soon, it was Toktok’s turn for the cotton candy. The candies this time had gotten quite creative and they could make characters with the cotton.
Toktok bought one that looked like a ’pig’, though Oslo only knew of those from children’s story books sold in the territory’s bookstores. Something about three pig brothers building different houses or something.
Linlin bought a goblin-shaped cotton candy and teased the green ones, adorably saying she was about to eat them, causing them to giggle. The goblins, on the other hand, were not ’cannibalistic’ so most of them did not order goblin-shaped, but they chose a different animal.
The two groups melshed together like this and ended up walking together. Toktok was ’chatty’ because it wasn’t often she could talk with someone so proficient with sign language.
Angelo just watched his wife super happy and then elbowed Oslo. "The ladies are busy with each other. Shall we watch the fight?"
This made Lin curious. "What fight?"
"Oh, Baku and Gill are sparring again today."
Oslo’s eyes twitch. "Again?"
Baku and Gill were pretty famous for always sparring until they were bleeding to heck.
Now, as soon as things settled after the Cold Wave, they were at it again.
It started with the whole misunderstanding about Gochi, though somehow things just developed in a way that they preferred fighting each other.
Many people came up with different explanations for these, one of which was simple: their personalities just clashed by default. They were just the kind of people who repelled each other when they were in the same area.
Another group was the self-proclaimed ’experts’ in analyzing fighters.
When ’analysts’ went by to explain, they said it was because the other’s style was the other’s weakness, and they could grow most by fighting. Baku was specialized in very close-range combat, which could be neutralized—assuming a person was powerful enough—by mid ranged weapons.
Long-ranged too but generally those weren’t fast enough to shoot an arrow or cast a spell before Baku could get to them.
On the other hand, Gill who specialized in spears would have trouble with movements that were very quick and those techniques that consistently reduced the distance to nil.
That, and they’re really just annoyed with each other.
When the group arrived at the sparring ring, the seating areas were full and many people were standing.
"Gill bet huge amounts of gold to himself."
"Wow, confidence."
"Hey! Gill is our deputy! He has to be strong!"
"But going against Baku is just..."
Anyway, the battle began about half an hour later in one of the sparring fields, which was—as always—filled with people. People loved a good fight, after all!
The two stood at respective sides of the stage.
Gill pointed his spear at the half-orc. "This time will be different."
Baku sneered. "It’s always interesting to see you try."
Gill rolled his eyes and swung his spear at a low angle, forcing Baku to jump up. Then, a depression suddenly appeared where Baku was supposed to land.
Baku’s senses were not to be underestimated, however, so he twisted his center of gravity and landed elsewhere. Gill predicted where he would land and swung his spear there before he even landed, but Baku swiped his big arm to redirect it.
Unexpectedly, this was not the main attack and another depression appeared, causing Baku to tilt to where the spear was redirected. Baku narrowed his eyes and jumped up, avoiding the subsequent attacks.
Gill had battled with him many times over the past several months and he had also watched a lot of videos of their fights. Halforc’s attacks and defense techniques were strong, but the variation generally wasn’t as much as human’s.
Gill sent him a barrage of stabs and swipes, temporarily putting Baku in the defense. Before Baku could gather his bearings, Gill used another small bulk of his mana to mess around with the soil under Baku. If Baku were human, he’d have long fallen on his face just by this.
Soon, Gill saw a relatively unstable jump. Gill took advantage of this to create a sharp spike from the side, which had managed to swipe at Baku even if it was just a scratch.
It was a bit unfair to use two elements against someone who had none, but it was just his talent. Who told him to have two elements?
Anyway, Baku was also taking advantage of his inherent physique and sturdiness to beat him (Gill) up all the time.
It was also why he specifically chose this sparring ring. There were several sparring areas in Alterra, and some of them did not have pavements.
When the battle was going to be damaging, the ones directly on soil were preferred because they were cheaper to rent and easier to maintain and fix.
This sparring ring had well compacted soil that fit well with Gill’s earth element.
In the previous fights, he hadn’t really maximized his earth skills because Baku’s senses were strong and could detect earth techniques easier.
Fire was much more unpredictable so he preferred it before. After analyzing his old fights, Gill realized that he had been undermining his other element all this time.
Gill had studied well and learned his lessons. He was determined to win today!
Toktok = the mute girl. Angelo = one of Baron’s cousins. A guard
