There were various tools, big and small, and the predominant race going around...were dwarves, followed by humans and goblins.
He was greeted by Mozan, the steward of the place, and they headed to the main production area, which was a massive hall with dwarves hunched over tables. Their backs had developed into permanent hunched backs by now, but no one here cared about that.
Evos’ eyes fixed on the area where small black balls were being made. The progress was not fast, part by part every hour, but it was still considered fast outside. "How many bombs did we send to Valov?"
"Quite a few," Mozan said. "It’s time to see how good the weapons are."
...
Meanwhile, Piddes went home, throwing things around and grumbling bitterly. The very pregnant Octavia, who was due to give birth very soon, was leisurely walking along the gardens when she saw her husband.
They had never been intimate again after the initial days of the marriage, but she still had to pretend to be a virtuous wife. She had been helping him with a few businesses, in fact.
"What’s wrong?"
"Is my brother better than me?"
"Pairo? What makes you say that?"
"Father brought him out again! As if he’s training him!"
In other families, this might not mean much. But for the family of the Lord with multiple heirs, this move naturally held a lot of meanings.
"I can organize dwarven weapons, too!"
Octavia flinched. "What?"
...
A day later, Alterra received the news from Silva via post from elsewhere.
After all, Alterra was on the City’s radar now so they had to avoid direct contact.
Silva sent something to one of the Glen’s subsidiary Towns, Baccal Town, which had once been egged on by Mafo (the former lord of Voumi Town) to go against Valov, and had even assisted Mafo in the war against Flaret Town.
It was a bit of an awkward relationship, but it wasn’t personal, especially now that they were technically allies.
Silva’s letter was in code, as if he had an old friend there. This ’old friend’ was a talent that he had been trying to recruit to Hassen City. He mentioned a lot of opportunities there, including opportunities for growth, and seeing things that wouldn’t be available elsewhere.
A lot of information was purposely very vague, especially since Silva wasn’t supposed to know a lot of these things. There was also a chance that the news was a trap, so they’d see who was spying on Hassen.
Fortunately for them, Silva was very smart and had a crash course on stealth and spywork back when he was still in Alterra, and this included certain code words.
For instance, in Alterra, the bread from the restaurant was famously mocked for being a low-key weapon, and there were plenty of mentions of it, though in the context that Hassen could improve it so much with special sauces that might be so rare that they couldn’t be found in the market.
When Garan and the rest read it, they could tell what he was trying to say.
"Large weapons?" Althea mumbled, and Garan nodded as he scanned it at the same time. "They might be dwarven weapons."
Oslo and Orion frowned at this. They were the representatives of the Golds this time. Since it was a letter from Silva, and therefore would have some news about Zinnia, they had the right to know its contents too.
"Although no one had seen dwarves there in recent years, historically speaking, Hassen City had been the largest slave owners of dwarves back then."
It would not be surprising if they had an arsenal of dwarven weapons. They would not even be surprised if they still had a lot of them hidden somewhere.
A solemn atmosphere surrounded the room. Visually, the trebuchet they saw used in the Ferrol war was nothing special.
However, a medieval Terran trebuchet wouldn’t have been able to scratch the walls here. System Walls were reinforced by various arrays, so even if they hit it a hundred times, there wouldn’t be a scratch.
In contrast, the dwarven trebuchets were able to cause significant damage within a couple of shots and then took down a portion of Ferrol’s walls in a few dozen shots.
That was a terrifying thing. After all, at the town level, the enemies were level 20s, with a lot of level 30s and 40s. Getting them to enter a town easily meant opening their interiors to a huge amount of damage.
They retrieved the weapon, and it was now in the research center. There were plenty of arrays embedded in it, but some of them were not visible even to the eye, like the magic was embedded in the material itself.
It seemed like dwarves made their weapons and embedded aether piece by piece, component by component, which was why they took so long to create a single tool.
On the plus side, a legitimate completed tool was nearly indestructible by average force. Even the premature one the goblins used against Guia back then took a lot of effort to remove a single component, but technically speaking, if the goblins were organized enough and had enough strength on their own, they could’ve continued using it, and they could’ve caused a lot more damage to Guia Village with it.
That trebuchet, taken by Baltimore, must’ve been sent back to Hassen since when they took over Iron Mountains, it was no longer there.
If it was still there, the bastard Baltimore (may he not rest in peace) would’ve used it during the war with them. In that case, they would’ve obtained a dwarven weapon earlier, psh.
Anyway, they studied the tools as best as they could, though at most they could just use them, but not exactly be able to diffuse the attacks. The good news was that their walls have a high level for their tier, even the highest a Town could get, so even if the enemy brought a few of these weapons, they’d still take a while to bring down their walls.
Who wouldn’t be worried?
