Chapter 186 -186: Maintenance

Ji Tian arrived home at 7:30 p.m., and a Pagani was parked inside the manor facing the gate; it belonged to Ji Lingyun.

As she walked past the car, Ji Tian took a closer look and also glanced at the license plate. It was different from the Golden Master’s on the last program, but the car was similar. However, Ji Lingyun wasn’t the only person in the world with this model.

When she entered through the wide-open door, Ji Lingyun was sitting on the sofa reading documents, wearing glasses that added a touch of gentility to his appearance.

“Big brother, you’re back from your business trip?”

Last time Ji Lingyun mentioned he was going on a business trip, Ji Tian had thought it would be at least a week, but surprisingly he returned in just two days.

He looked up at her. It was already dark outside; he wouldn’t have known that she was out playing wild before coming home if he hadn’t returned.

Ji Lingyun narrowed his eyes slightly, considering all the reports given to him at school, and directly asked, “Have you been getting close to the Bai Family’s bastard lately?”

Ji Tian pursed her lips. Hearing the words “bastard” made her inexplicably uncomfortable; at least in her mind, he hadn’t done anything to harm others.

So she couldn’t help retorting, “Big brother, he has a name. His name is Qin Jiangsheng.”

Ji Lingyun paused, then took off his glasses and placed them on the table. His eyes were long and narrow, with eyelids tightly compressed and a sharp, cold look when he was serious.

“Ji Tian, you’re still studying. Put aside all these unnecessary thoughts. His background is complicated, and getting involved with him is not a good thing. I’ve heard… his real mother is in Capital City, and the Bai Family is as tainted as the Qin Family of Central Continent.”

Ji Tian looked at Ji Lingyun, not understanding, “What does any of this have to do with Qin Jiangsheng? He didn’t choose this identity, and it wasn’t his choice what his parents were like. Why should these negative thoughts be forced upon him? Will avoiding him make the world a better place? The dirty places will still be dirty.”

The dirty one was never Qin Jiangsheng, but those who would rather see him dead.

Ji Lingyun sat up straighter, his lips tight, “So, you want to argue with me over an outsider?”

Ji Tian’s lips moved slightly, but she did not speak, and the atmosphere remained tense.

Ji Weinan came downstairs holding his homework only to see this scene. Seeing his elder brother’s grim expression and Ji Tian’s rigid face, he gathered the gist from the stairs and quickly rushed to Ji Tian’s side, blocking her, “Big brother, don’t be harsh on our little sister.”

Ji Lingyun shot him a sharp look, “Stand aside, and don’t interfere.”

From his tone alone, one could tell that Ji Lingyun was angry.

Ji Weinan had been scared of his elder brother when he was very young. Ji Lingyun was ten years their senior and it had mostly been he who had raised them in lieu of their unreliable parents. Ji Weinan shrank his neck at the memory of the last time he had been slapped.

“Big brother,” he said, bracing himself, “Qin Jiangsheng isn’t bad. He’s been really good to our sister… Oh, by the way, he even saved her during the first episode of the show. Sister said she nearly got pushed down a slope and killed that night, but, thankfully, Qin Jiangsheng was there.”

Ji Tian looked slightly stunned, finding it hard to imagine Ji Weinan standing up for her for the first time.

He turned his head and winked at Ji Tian, “Right, little sister… Qin Jiangsheng is actually pretty nice, big brother. You say we shouldn’t learn bad things, but you didn’t say we couldn’t hang out with good people.”

Ji Lingyun still looked at them coldly, and Ji Weinan scratched his head, “Even if, even if the guy’s background isn’t great, he’s never done anything bad to our sister. Big brother, as long as he hasn’t hurt us, he’s a good person.”

“Heh,” Ji Lingyun let out a cold laugh, his tone unreadable, “You’re also speaking up for the Bai kid? When did you two start being so united?”

Ji Weinan knew he was implying that he previously didn’t care much for Ji Tian, but that was in the past. No outsider could be as good to him as his family, and it was the disappointment from his family that was truly cutting.

He looked away awkwardly, “I’m just telling the truth… We’re at the same school every day, I know what he’s like far better than you…”

Ji Lingyun’s gaze moved past him and towards Ji Tian, “And what do you think?”

“He’s my friend.”

“Just a friend?” Ji Lingyun asked back.

Ji Tian fiddled with her head, both guilty and firm, “Of course! As solid as they come.”

Ji Lingyun finally let up, “Well then, fine, you can be friends. But if you dare to date, I’ll break his legs.”

Ji Tian: “…”

Ji Weinan: “…”

“By the way, Ah Nan,” changed the subject, “who on the show wanted to push your sister down to her death?”

Ji Weinan immediately recounted everything, thinking it was better to leave such distant matters to his influential and rich elder brother rather than tire himself out seeking the truth.

After Ji Lingyun understood the situation, he said with a furrowed brow, “I understand. I’ll look into it.”

His expression softened significantly as he took out a gift box from under the coffee table and handed it to Ji Tian, “Here, the gift you wanted. I brought it back for you.”

Ji Tian stepped out from behind Ji Weinan and reached out to take it, only recalling Ji Lingyun asking her what gift she wanted before his trip when she saw the delicate box.

She opened it with a grin, only to be momentarily blinded by the dazzling light. Her eyes widened in surprise at the sight of a large diamond sparkling with rainbow brilliance under the light. It was obviously valuable and luxurious, and what’s more, it looked familiar…

“Big brother… where did you get this diamond?”

Seeing her stunned, Ji Lingyun smiled with a curve of his lips, “Like it? It cost me two hundred million.”

What a coincidence…

The same diamond had been auctioned off for two hundred million to a wealthy businessman at the cruise ship auction.

Ji Tian couldn’t let go of it, touching the diamond tenderly, “I like it.”

“That’s good to hear. I’m so good to you, you’ll have to listen to me from now on, got it?”

He stood up, stuffing documents into his briefcase, and headed outside, “I won’t be coming home to sleep tonight, there’s some business to take care of at the company. I’m off.”

Ji Weinan, coveting the diamond, called out to his retreating back, “Big brother, you brought a gift for little sister, what about mine?! That’s not fair.”

He only received two indifferent words in response, “None.”

“…” Ji Weinan’s face turned pale, “I really must not be the biological one.”

“You’re smart, saving yourself the trouble by making big brother look into it.”

Hearing Ji Tian’s voice, he chuckled sheepishly, looking at her hopefully, “Big brother will definitely be more useful than me. As long as the truth comes out, that’s what matters. Little sister, you promised me that once the truth is out, you’ll make up with me.”

“…”

Her third brother was really simple-minded; if she had really cut ties with him, she wouldn’t be talking to him. But this was good too, it could scare him a bit so he wouldn’t act foolishly again.

She nodded coolly, “We’ll see, depending on your behavior.”

As for the outcome of the investigation, it was no longer important. She just wanted to subtly remind her family to be cautious of the Bai Family.
