Alpha's Regret: The Seventh Time was Forever-Chapter 123 – A life for a life
A faint frown formed on Seraphine’s face as she listened to Gray’s desperate plea through the speaker, and when she finally responded her words carried such unexpected calmness that both Corvine and Voren looked at her with visible surprise, because the answer that came out of her mouth sounded nothing like the ruthless response they had been expecting to hear.
"Okay," Seraphine said evenly, her tone relaxed as if the entire matter meant very little to her. "I’ll let it go since you have begged."
For a brief moment, silence filled the room as Corvine and Voren exchanged confused glances, neither of them quite certain they had heard her correctly because Seraphine had never struck them as someone who would show mercy so easily after everything Gray and the others had done to her.
Was she really that kind? The question hung quietly in the air, and although neither man spoke it aloud, both of them instinctively understood that they were about to discover the real answer very soon.
On the other end of the line, Gray released a long breath he had not realized he had been holding as relief rushed through him so suddenly that it almost made his head spin, his voice turning eager as he hurried to express gratitude before she could possibly reconsider.
"Thank you, Sera," Gray said quickly, the tension in his voice loosening as hope returned to him for the first time since the nightmare had begun. "I promise you that I will never go against you again, and I swear I will—"
"I haven’t finished yet." Seraphine’s calm interruption cut straight through his words, and the moment those four simple words reached the room the entire atmosphere changed in an instant, because the softness in her voice did nothing to hide the sharp weight behind it.
Corvine leaned forward slightly while Voren grew quiet, both men instinctively focusing their attention on her as if they already sensed that the real conversation had only just begun.
On the other end of the line, Gray felt a small knot forming in his stomach as uneasiness began creeping back into his chest.
"What do you mean?" he asked cautiously, his voice carrying a hint of growing fear.
Seraphine rested her elbow against the arm of the chair while speaking in the same composed tone, yet the words she delivered carried a heaviness that settled over everyone listening. "A life for a life."
The phrase fell into the conversation like a stone dropped into still water, sending invisible ripples through the silence that followed.
Gray’s grip tightened around his phone as the meaning slowly sank in, his stomach twisting painfully while dread crawled through his chest.
"What... exactly do you mean by that?" he asked again, his voice now noticeably strained.
Seraphine did not hesitate as she answered him. "You wanted my life," she said calmly, her voice steady and unhurried. "So in exchange for keeping your company and your position as Alpha, I want your life."
The words struck Gray with such force that for a moment his mind went completely blank, because the realization arrived all at once and left him feeling colder than he had ever felt before.
In that moment, he finally understood what Voren had meant earlier.
Voren had warned him that Seraphine was far more dangerous than he appeared to be, yet Gray had refused to believe it at the time.
Now the truth stood in front of him in the most brutal way possible. Voren had demanded an arm as punishment for threatening Seraphine’s life.
Seraphine, on the other hand, demanded their lives in exchange for hers.
"Sera..." Gray began slowly, his voice heavy as he struggled to process the terrifying reality she had placed before him. "What good would it do me if I gained the whole world but lost the most important thing I have, my life?"
A quiet scoff slipped from Seraphine’s lips as she leaned back slightly, clearly unimpressed by the sudden concern he now showed for his own survival.
"You should have thought about that before deciding you wanted mine," she replied with cold honesty, her voice carrying none of the sympathy he clearly hoped to hear.
She paused briefly before continuing, her tone becoming even more final.
"Unless you are ready to drink wolfsbane in front of me without any antidote, you should consider this conversation finished," she said plainly. "And if you are not ready to do that, then I suggest you never call this number again."
The line went quiet for a moment after she finished speaking, and the silence carried such a heavy finality that even Gray seemed unable to respond. Then, only a short time later, Corvine’s phone rang again.
Seraphine glanced toward the screen and immediately guessed who it would be.
"Riven," she said calmly as she picked up the phone herself and answered the call without hesitation. "I already gave Gray my offer, so I think it would be better if you speak to him first."
She was already preparing to end the call when another thought crossed her mind, causing her to pause briefly before adding one final piece of information.
"Oh, and I almost forgot something important," she said casually, as if mentioning it now had only just occurred to her.
"I reported both of you to the council," she continued in the same relaxed tone. "So if I were you, I would stay far away from the pack for a while, unless you want to risk showing your faces and getting your asses banished the moment anyone sees you."
The blow landed so brutally that Riven lost the ability to speak for several seconds, because the realization of what she had done sank in with crushing weight. The call ended soon afterward.
Riven immediately contacted Gray, and once the two men exchanged everything they had just learned the crushing reality of their situation settled over them like a relentless storm, grief and frustration pouring down in waves as they sat with the knowledge that their power, their businesses, and their futures were all slipping out of their hands.
For a long moment neither of them spoke, the silence between them thick with despair.
Then suddenly an idea surfaced in Riven’s mind. "We did all of this for Ravyn," Riven said slowly, his voice carrying a sharp edge as the thought formed more clearly. "Since we are losing everything anyway, the least he can do is give us positions in his company and keep us afloat."
