Chapter 232: Chapter 232 The Fetus may not live

The pungent smoke rolled in and quickly filled every corner. Emily only felt her breath stutter, followed by a violent cough. The smoke was like a thousand sharp needles, piercing her throat with such force that every breath was like swallowing a razor blade. Her eyes stung unbearably from the smoke, and tears welled up uncontrollably, only to be instantly evaporated by the heat, leaving only a trail of dried tears on her cheeks.

Emily struggled in vain, trying to break free from the ropes binding her hands and feet, yet the ropes were like shackles of fate, tightly strangled into her skin, her hands and feet had long been worn to a bloody pulp, the pain that pierced her heart was like a tidal wave hitting her nerves, but she no longer had time to care. She watched in despair as the flames grew fiercer and fiercer, and her heart was filled with helplessness and fear.

" Help, help." Emily cried, but her voice seemed weak against the deafening roar of the flames, and as her body grew limp from the heat, her consciousness began to fade.

" Emily, Emily," a voice called out to Emily in her mind. It was Adam who had sent her the telepathic message.

" Adam.." Emily responded telepathically to Adam." I.."

" Where are you, Emily?" Adam’s voice was troubled.

" I’m in the... The warehouse...Fire." Emily responded to Adam with her last ounce of strength, but her voice was as faint as a candle in the wind.

Her body could no longer support her, her eyes grew dark, and she slowly passed out. At this point in the warehouse the flames had completely engulfed her, and the raging conflagration seemed to be revealing the fact that it was about to consume a living being.

.................

"Do you feel Emily? " Klaus asked Adam anxiously, "Where is she?"

"She just said warehouse and fire. " Adam, who was always calm and collected, showed a panicked look, as if he had a premonition of something bad.

"Try to connect with Emily again. Now. " Klaus urged. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Adam gathered his mind and tried to telepathically link Emily again, but after a few minutes, Adam said in frustration, " I tried, I still can’t feel Emily."

" Damn it." Klaus pounded his fist on a nearby tree trunk. He strove to repress the anger within him, and then to quiet his thoughts.

"The warehouse, the fire. " Klaus repeated the words. Suddenly, he reacted, "Emily must be in a warehouse somewhere where there’s a fire."

"Most of the warehouses are on the west side after the pack was rebuilt, but there are still some abandoned warehouses on the east side." Adam made a snap decision, " Let’s get a head start, I’ll go west, you go east."

So Klaus turned without a moment’s hesitation, and with great speed he ran toward the east side of the pack.

The deserted warehouses on the east side were spread out in the open waste, and Klaus’s eyes, like torches, swept rapidly from one to the other.

Suddenly a cloud of black smoke billowed from the vent of a warehouse, and for an instant Klaus’s nerves were strained to the utmost. He rushed quickly to the warehouse, sweat rolling down his forehead like beans, the back of his shirt soaked with sweat.

Klaus reached the door of the warehouse and found it securely locked with a rusty lock. With a roar of rage he seized the lock with both hands, and as he did so he tore it off.

Klaus threw the lock to one side, and then violently pushed open the warehouse door, and a strong wave of heat, mingled with pungent smoke, came upon him like a raging tide.

Inside the warehouse, the flames danced wildly, emitting a chilling whirring sound, as if the devil were roaring, and Klaus plunged headlong into the flames, shouting, "Emily!

All he heard was the crackling of the flames. So he plunged deeper into the flames and searched. At last he saw Emily on the ground in the midst of the flames.

Klaus rushed recklessly toward her, but just then a huge burning wooden pillar shook under the heat, and before Klaus could react it gave way, crashing down upon him with a heavy thud.

A sharp pain shot through his body. Klaus clenched his teeth and braced his hands against the post, the muscles of his arms trembling with the force. His legs, too, were stamping the ground desperately, trying with all their strength to lift the wooden posts. Sweat rained down his face, obscuring his vision.

At last he was able to raise the post a little, and Klaus took the opportunity to crawl out from under it. He was staggering from his multiple injuries, but he managed to fight off the pain and dizziness and quickly ran to Emily’s side.

"Emily, Emily." Klaus called out Emily’s name, but she was unconscious and unresponsive.

Klaus picks up Emily, shielding her with his body, and fights his way toward the warehouse’s exterior.

The flames pursued him, and the smoke nearly drowned him and Emily. Finally, they made it out of the infernal warehouse.

Klaus breathed in the fresh air, but his hold on Emily remained unbroken.

"Klaus. " A low voice escaped from between Emily’s lips, parched from the smoke and fire, dripping with endless weakness and trepidation.

"I’m here, lover. " Klaus instantly bent to his knees as he gently settled Emily on the ground, clutching her hand, his gaze locked on her face. " You’re okay now."

"Baby...." Emily gasped with difficulty as her brow furrowed.

"Baby what? " Klaus put his ear close to Emily’s mouth as he strained to hear exactly what she was saying. But Emily’s slightly open eyes slowly closed again.

At that moment Mrs. Power arrived with the rest of the pack, and from a distance came the shrill rattle of the fire-truck approaching.

Mrs. Bauer caught a glimpse of Emily’s soggy bottom, and for an instant her face was as white as paper, and her eyes were round with horror. She flailed her hands in panic, her voice changed pitch, and she screamed at the top of her lungs, "Oh my God, Her water’s coming out! How could this be? We can’t wait a minute, quickly send her to the hospital, quick!"

As if waking from a dream, the crowd swarmed up, carefully and deftly lifting Emily and running toward the parked car.

Ten minutes later, they took Emily to the hospital. She lay on a mobile bed being wheeled to the operating room by the paramedics, Klaus following alongside, holding Emily’s hand tightly as he said, "Don’t be afraid, I’m here, lover."

Emily struggled to open her eyes, her lips twitching as though she could not speak. Soon Emily was rushed into the operating room, and at the doctor’s warning Klaus had to let go of his hand. He watched as the metal door slowly closed, then a red light came on.

A few minutes later the door to the operating room suddenly opened with a cold, hard, abrupt sound. A doctor, dressed in surgical scrubs and a mask, hurried out with great strides.

"Who is Emily’s family? " The doctor asked while looking around.

"I’m her mate." Klaus blurted out.

"The pregnant woman is in an emergency. We’re trying to save her. " The doctor’s words were quick and brief, "We will do everything we can to save the life of the mother and the fetus. But I want you to be prepared."

The second half of the doctor’s sentence is slowed down, giving a hint that it’s not going to be positive.

"What do you mean? " Klaus’s chest tightened, like it was being gripped hard by a large invisible hand.

"We can’t guarantee the fetus will live. " The doctor sighed slightly, his gaze shifting away from Klaus.

Klaus froze, his eyes full of shock, anger, and disbelief. Then, like a powder keg kindled by fury, his whole being took a violent step forward, and his great hands, like pincers, seized the doctor by the collar in a death-grip, and with all their might lifted it upward.

"I order you, you must make sure that both Emily and my child are safe, or else——"

" Klaus. " Adam, who had arrived in a hurry, interrupted Klaus. He gripped Klaus’s wrist hard, forcing Klaus’s hand from the doctor’s.

"What the fuck are you doing? " Adam snarled at Klaus," Get the doctor out of here."

The doctor breathed heavily, his voice tinged with a few shudders and panic as he hurriedly said, " Sorry." With that, he scrambled to straighten his collar and adjust his mask, then quickly turned to return to the operating room.

"Are you crazy? " Adam snarled at Klaus , "Emily is being resuscitated in the operating room and you’re here threatening the doctor."

"The damn doctor said he couldn’t guarantee that my baby would live. " Klaus pounded his fist into the wall in anger, a dull thud echoing through the hallway.

"What? " Adam instantly frowned, his eyes filled with unease and worry. After a moment, he calmed down and walked over to Klaus. He reached out and gently rested his hand on Klaus’s slightly trembling shoulder and squeezed it a little harder.

Adam tilted his head a little and looked into Klaus’s eyes, which were full of anger and despair. His voice was low but steady. "Klaus, the doctors are doing their best to save the child. We have to trust them. Emily is so strong, she will definitely make it through this and the baby will be safe. Let’s be patient and wait for a little while longer."

Klaus said nothing, but stared at the closed door of the operating room. His eyes were troubled and blank.

The two men stood outside the operating room and fell into a deadly silence, broken only by heavy breathing and the mingling of heartbeats in the corridor, which smelled of antiseptic water. Every second that passed was like a blunt knife to the tip of their hearts, tormenting them with the anticipation of the outcome in the operating room.
