Alpha's Secret Bride-Chapter 73: When the Moon Fell Silent
It was another beautiful day at Nightclaw pack estate. The morning rays poured new hopes and aspirations through Brandon’s window. The hopes and aspirations were confirmed by melodious birdsong heard from the trees on the pack estate. To Brandon, there was nothing pleasant and beautiful about the morning. Life without his mate felt so empty and meaningless. There was a wave of intense despair and profound sadness in his heart. The sadness kept increasing as the clock ticked. His eyes were red and puffy as he stared through the window of the chamber that was on the third level of the mansion where they spent all night making love a few moon-cycles ago. The soft wind with an end-of-the-winter feel was quite nostalgic. It kept reminding him of the day they met each other at the General Park. The nostalgic feeling made his heart heavier.
The whole estate was calm as though a wolf was lost. Apparently, the news of Emma’s parting had been passed around. The babbling of a stream that cascaded down the rocks nearby became noisier and was clearly heard as a result of the calmness in the Nightclaw estate.
Brandon slowly pulled the intercom remote closer and hit it nonchalantly. Bernard, who had been trying to talk to him since he came back last night looking pathetic, responded immediately.
"Bernard, send Naomi to my chamber," he whimpered, and hurled the remote aside. Bernard led Naomi to the chamber at once.
"Moonrise, alpha," Naomi greeted him.
"Did she call you?" He asked with a flat tone, still staring at the trees.
"No alpha."
"Did you try to reach her?"
"Yes, but I couldn’t."
Brandon kept quiet for a few seconds.
"Please, keep your eyes on your device and notify me as soon as she calls."
"Alright, alpha."
"You may leave."
"Alpha, your...the...." Bernard frowned and bit his lower lip. He didn’t know what to call the new she-wolf that had just taken over his mate’s position. "She is waiting for you at the feeding chamber."
"Go and seal my mate’s chamber and her study chamber."
"She slept in your mate’s chamber last night."
"Secure the study chamber."
"Alpha, your moonally, Ken came in yesterday."
"Where is he?"
"In one of the visitor’s chambers."
Brandon ignored him and continued staring at the trees with a heavy heart.
"Alpha, I trust your real mate; she will come back stronger and braver."
"Thank you," Brandon murmured. Bernard bowed and left the bedchamber. Tears clouded Brandon’s eyes again. Bernard’s words sounded like condolence in his ear. He felt like some wolf who had just lost his mate.
"Stop right there!" Lunara yelled when she saw Bernard and Naomi coming down the stairs. Naomi quickly bowed and greeted her, but Bernard did not. He couldn’t hide his resentment. He detested her from day one. Brandon once accused him of sleeping with her and that made him detest her more.
"Your hatred for me started the first day I moved into the Royal Den. But you know what? It will never change anything! You are just an ordinary servant and so shall you be for the rest of your unfortunate life! I don’t care if you greet me or not, but my anger has an elastic limit. If you get to my limit, I’ll throw you out!" Lunara yelled at Bernard.
"You can manipulate my alpha’s mate, but you can not manipulate me. Please, stay in your small obstructed space and watch your boundaries. Don’t encroach on mine!"
Bernard sighed and walked past her. Naomi continued standing with her head bowed.
"What’s your name?"
"I’m... Naomi, Luna," Naomi sputtered, avoiding eye contact.
"Are you sleeping with that nonentity?"
"No."
"Where are you guys coming from then?"
"The alpha sent for me, Luna."
"What! My mate sent for you and not me?"
"Yes"
"For what?"
"He wants his mate’s bedchamber sealed."
"My bedchamber?" Lunara asked, as though there was no other mate but her.
"No, his real... mate’s...bed...."
A resounding slap landed on her face before she could complete the sentence.
"I am his real mate, the whole packland knows. Don’t ever...I...think I need to address all the domestic staff."
"I’m sorry."
"Why did he send you to seal the gold digger’s bedchamber?"
"I’m... her... maid."
"Good! Since the chamber now belongs to me, you will be my maid."
"Alright, Luna," Naomi bowed again.
"Go and summon all the domestic staff. I want to address them. They need to know who their alpha’s real mate is."
"They are in the feeding hall already."
"Good, come with me," Lunara said, and led the way. Naomi walked coldly behind her with tears in her eyes, wishing her real alpha’s mate never left. She kept staring at the communication device she was holding, hoping to see just a beep from Paige.
All the domestic staff stood up and bowed as soon as Lunara walked into the feeding hall. There was silence in the hall except for the clicking sound of Thalia’s communication device. Thalia was busy with her device as usual and didn’t notice the presence of Lunara Greens, her role model she admired so much.
She lifted her face immediately when she heard the sound of high-heeled shoes coming towards her. A dirty and unexpected slap greeted her face before she could say a word. Thalia fell and hit her head on the floor. Naomi ran to her and helped her stand on her feet again. Lunara opened her left palm. Thalia understood what she wanted and dropped her communication device on it. She smashed the device on the floor. The young she-wolf squatted to pick up the pieces of her device. Tears covered her eyes.
"Get out!" Lunara yelled. Thalia stood up, sighed, and began to walk towards the exit. Lunara frowned and turned to her.
"She lacks manners! Come here!"
Thalia stood still. Lunara walked slowly up to her, carrying her shoulders with easy grace, and slapped her again.
"I don’t want to ever see you around this hall again. One more sigh, I’ll send you and your father out of this estate! Your father was my mate’s Personal Assistant. He is not fit for the job anymore and another wolf has taken over from him. I don’t know why he is still harboring him and his foolish she-wolf!"
Thalia gave out an outcry and ran out of the feeding hall.
"Let this serve as a warning to all of you. I do not tolerate disrespect of any kind. I am the future Queen Luna of this Kingdom! I am your alpha’s real mate! Bowing your heads anywhere you see me won’t cost you anything. I will sack anyone who disrespects me," Lunara continued yelling. Everywhere was as silent as a graveyard.
"I have new rules, I’m going to read them out later in the day. I expect each and every one of you to abide by my rules for peaceful co-existence. Am I understood?"
"Yes," the workers chorused.
"That dirty she-wolf that flaunted herself as your alpha’s mate last moon cycle is nothing but a filthy whore who jumps from one wolf to another. I have sent her to where she belongs - the dungeon!! She is in a dungeon right now."
The domestic staff frowned and exchanged glances. It was as if they talked to one another with their mindlink and agreed to abandon the food on the feeding table for her. Before Lunara’s eyes, they dropped their cutleries and began to walk out of the hall.
"There are millions of wolves out there who have been begging me to work for free. Just one post on my page, this whole estate won’t accommodate workers!" Lunara turned and left the hall. Naomi continued walking behind her, wondering how long she would continue body guarding her new Luna.
"Bernard," Lunara called as she walked into the cookhouse. Bernard ignored her and continued tidying the cookhouse up with a sad face.
"He refused to eat, I guess."
Bernard kept quiet and refused to talk to her.
"Queen Luna pampered him a lot," she grinned.
"Fine! Bernard, I’m....sorry...I spoke to you harshly. Fix his breakfast, I’m taking it to his chamber," she said, sitting on one of the chairs and waiting for Bernard.
"The Princess has taken his food to him."
"And they won’t stop pampering him," she grinned again. "Alright, where is he?"
"The last chamber on the third floor."
"Oh, thank the moon goddess!" She rolled her eyes. "I hate the tight security in his bedchamber," Lunara said, and began to walk towards the stairs.
"Don’t come with me," she waved at Naomi. Naomi breathed a silent thanks and joined Bernard in the cookhouse.
"What a mess!" Naomi said.
"What?" Bernard asked, pretending he didn’t know anything.
"Two siblings! Alpha’s real mate never told me that this wicked wolf was her sibling."
Bernard was not in the mood for Naomi’s gossip, so he ignored her and continued working.
"I blame our alpha for falling in love with Luna Emma when he knew he had a fated bride already. If anything happens to her, I will never forgive him."
"Would you mind your business?" Bernard said. Naomi’s eyes opened very wide when a call from an unknown number came in on her communication device. She quickly accepted the incoming call without hesitation. She placed her right hand on her chest to prevent her heart, which was beating as though it would jump out of her chest, from falling off.
Bernard quickly dropped the hand towel he was holding and ran towards her. His breathing was noisy too. He knew how important that call was to Brandon and couldn’t wait to deliver the good news to him.
