In the living room, Arthur, who had been waiting there, saw the man walk in and didn’t bother to stand up to greet him, simply saying indifferently, "Director Defoe Wells, you’re truly hard to invite."
The man, called Defoe Wells, spread his hands with a somewhat helpless response, "I can’t help it. There’s been a lot of business to deal with at the Santa Monica Branch these days, and I really couldn’t get away. Mr. Arthur, please try to understand."
"Enough of that, the reason I’ve asked you to come is pretty simple. For years, our family’s tax affairs have been in contact with your branch. I hope you can come forward and explain to Mayor David, asking him not to pursue the investigation any further."
Upon hearing this, Defoe Wells frowned and replied, "Mr. Arthur, since you know David is now the Mayor, you should be clear that I have no command over his actions."
What a joke, if he could command David, then he would be the Mayor, not David.
"You need to think carefully, once they find something amiss with our family’s taxes, it’s the same as denying the work your branch did previously on our family’s taxes, and it’s indirectly telling everyone that you, the Santa Monica Branch Director, are incompetent!"
Arthur’s words instantly darkened Defoe Wells’s expression.
The Sackler family was in his jurisdiction, and so was Purdue Pharma, so of course, he understood that if David really found something this time, the Santa Monica Branch would definitely be put through the wringer.
But there was nothing he could do, now that David, being the head of the Los Angeles IRS, was set on investigating and it wasn’t something Defoe Wells, a simple branch director, could stop.
"And don’t forget, over the years, our family has contributed much tax revenue to the Santa Monica District, and you personally have received many benefits from our family. If anything happens to our family, do you think you can escape responsibility?"

If Arthur’s previous words had only made Defoe Wells angry, these words now filled him with anger mixed with helplessness.
Yes, during his years as Director of the Santa Monica Branch, he had indeed taken quite a few benefits from the Sackler family, thus providing them considerable tax shelter.
And according to Arthur now, once his family was found problematic by David, he would definitely be dragged down as well.
It was a threat!
But at this point, Defoe Wells had no choice; he could only grit his teeth and reply, "I can speak to him, but you know the situation. Your family member has killed one of his inspectors; knowing his character, I don’t think he’ll let go, and if I can’t persuade him, you can’t blame me."
"Do the best you can."
Defoe Wells didn’t say much more, turned around, and left the villa. He got back into his car and started driving towards the direction of the city bureau.
Half an hour later, at the city bureau, David, who was interrogating a suspect related to the Sackler family, looked slightly puzzled when he heard that the Director of the Santa Monica Branch was looking for him.
But he soon answered, "Have him wait in my office."
Ten minutes later, David came out of the interrogation room and, pushing open the door of his own office, saw that Defoe Wells was already waiting.
Upon his arrival, Defoe Wells immediately stood up and said, "Director David, I hope I haven’t interrupted your work."
David took a seat at his desk and replied, "No, what brings you here?"
"About the Sackler family’s tax issues, our Santa Monica Branch has always been responsible for them over the years. And as for their tax situation, I wouldn’t dare claim that we’ve been perfect, but we’ve generally not been too far off. But since you, Director David, are starting an investigation, would you need to... take a look at our branch’s files on the Sackler family?"
Defoe Wells was actually being quite subtle with his words, hinting to David that if he wanted to deal with the family, why not communicate with their local branch first?
Not communicating was one thing, but to investigate without even asking for the tax files from them was clearly a sign of no trust in the Santa Monica Branch!
"What, is Director Defoe Wells questioning the practices of our city bureau?"
"Not at all, it’s just that if you proceed this way, Director David, if there’s really a problem found with the family’s taxes, our branch’s future tax work in the Santa Monica District... it might become difficult to carry out!"
Previously, David hadn’t felt anything amiss, for if he were the Santa Monica Branch Director, he too would feel somewhat displeased with the city bureau stepping into his jurisdiction to investigate tax affairs.
But Defoe Wells’s last comment made him sense that something was off.
To confirm his suspicions, he immediately activated his ability to scrutinize, inspecting the other man.
