An Extra's POV: My Three Fiancees Hate Me-Chapter 22: No backing out
Chapter 22: No backing out
Riven stood in front of his father's office. He drew a deep breath, gathering his thoughts before he would enter.
"Hey kid, that blood thing you did, I didn't tell your father. I figured it was something unique, so I decided to leave the choice of its secrecy to you," Liam said as he stood behind Riven.
Riven turned and flashed a smile. "Thank you for that, that's one of my worries out of your way," he said and pushed through the door, walking into the office.
Seated inside was his father, his grandfather, and the father of the Duke. Their gaze locked on him immediately he walked in.
He closed the door behind him and walked into the room, standing a few feet away from them. He waited, probably to be betrayed by his father.
But contrary to what he believed would happen, his father got up from his chair. He looked Riven right in the eye, his gaze softened as much as it possibly could, and then he spoke.
"I'm sorry Riven, for the way I acted. I was wrong to think that you were up to no good. I didn't understand what you had to go through today," his father apologized.
Riven's eyes widened in shock. He was confused—why was his father apologizing to him with so much sincerity?
"It takes some men decades of their life before they take a life, and you have already done that before becoming a man. That's my grandson-in-law," the Duke's father said.
When Riven heard that, he immediately got the image of what Liam must have told them—he told them about him killing two men.
"I didn't want to kill them, I swear, I was trying to survive," he said in a panicked voice. He knew that Liam probably told them that it was self-defense, but he wanted to make sure that they also believed it was self-defense.
"You don't have to worry, kid. Your father's knight told us everything. Attacking a noble is a crime punishable by death. You executed the proper judgment.
That being said, are you alright? Killing a man is no easy task. Even time-tested veterans crumble under the weight of the blood on their hands," the Duke's father said, looking right at Riven as he spoke.
"I am fine," Riven said, giving a straight-to-the-point response, refusing to allow any true feeling to slip through his lips.
"Riven, now that that is out of the way, Liam also told us more. He said you possess fire magic. I have been your father for all your life, and this is the first I have heard of this.
Did you hide your affinity all these years? And if you did, for what reason?" his father asked, palms pressed against the table. He leaned in more and more as he spoke.
"I didn't hide my affinity. I didn't have one. My affinity awakened a few days ago," Riven said.
"A few days ago? A late awakening then," his grandfather said.

"Riven, I don't really understand what is happening with you, but you said you are changing, or you want to change. So I want to give you the benefit of the doubt—mostly because your grandfather said I have to.
You said you want to change, you want me to see you as different. Well then, if you want that, then you have to do something for me," his father said, looking right into his eyes.
"You have awakened an affinity, and from what Liam said, you are very good at it. I want you to get into the Royal Academy of Vermillion.
The same academy that your brother will be headed to in a month. Your brother has trained for this all his life, but I am also only giving you from now till the academy tryouts to make it into the academy," his father said.
"A month? That's almost impossible," Riven said. He knew what the Royal Academy was, and he knew how hard it was to get in. It was one of the top academies in the kingdom and was established by the Royal Family.
"You only get one month, Riven," his father repeated.
"Riven, the reason your father has put this near impossible task on your head is because it is the only way to save your engagement with my granddaughter.
We thought of ways to sway her mother especially, but nothing we say or do will sway her. But she is a graduate from the Royal Academy, one of their best.
She has a strong belief that only the best of the best make it into the Royal Academy. If you can promise her tomorrow that you will make it into the academy, and during the best tryouts, you will be able to buy some time as the fiancé of my granddaughter.
But it is a risk, because if you fail, the engagement is immediately dissolved. So that is why you must get in this coming month," the Duke's father said.
"What if I don't want to be engaged with her anymore?" Riven asked, wanting to see their reaction.
"What did you just say?" the Duke's grandfather snapped, staring daggers into Riven.
"Enough of that, James. Don't threaten my grandson," Riven's grandfather spoke. He turned his gaze to Riven and spoke.
"My dear grandson, sadly there is no backing away."
