Chapter 45: Can’t kill

Rather than getting flustered, the man smiled even more, his lips almost reaching his ears.

"No matter what you do, I’ll make sure I have your heads for my happiness," the man yelled and charged in again. He suddenly leapt into the air; he slashed down at full speed.

Noel moved to the front and blocked the slash. His knees buckled under the force of the slash; he fell to one knee but managed to block the attack.

Though his hands trembled uncontrollably and seemed like they would give out at any moment.

Riven took the opening that his brother created and charged in at the man from the side, running as fast as he could. The man’s eyes followed Riven, and immediately Noel channeled his lightning and blasted the sword of the man back.

"Keep your eyes in front of you!" Noel yelled as he followed up with several attacks. He slashed in a repeated succession; every clash with their swords caused a small explosion of lightning.

Riven finally made it behind the man and charged in. He drove his sword right into the defenseless side of the man; his sword dug into the back, spilling blood like a jet.

"Arghhhhhh!" the man let out a pained shout. He suddenly blasted a huge gust of wind, throwing all of them into walls. novelbuddy.cσ๓

The man stood there huffing and puffing, his side bleeding slowly, his smile still on his face despite the fact that he was just stabbed deeply a few seconds ago.

He stood up straight and slowly took his hand to the side where he was wounded. He touched the bloodied side and pulled it to his mouth, tasting it—no, licking the blood.

"To think you would go as far as make me even more sad. You really are a pain in the ass," the man said and faced Riven.

"If you’re going to say that, at least say it with a frown on your face, not with that sadistic smile you have on," Riven said, getting himself off the ground.

"Still trying to take away my happiness even now. I’ll not have more of that," the man said and charged at Riven, but a massive crackle echoed through the cave and a bright bolt of lightning struck the man, slamming him into the wall with a massive lightning wound on his body.

The man slowly fell to the ground on all fours, blood pouring out of his mouth and nose.

"I told you to keep your eyes on me," Noel said, panting heavily after using the spell.

"Noel—"

"Shut the hell up and finish it. Don’t make my sacrifice be for nothing. I can only use two of that spell!" Noel yelled.

Riven nodded and took his sword. He rushed at the man, his blade in the air, ready to kill the man, but as his blade got close, another gust of wind blasted him back into the wall.

The man slowly got up to his feet, bleeding from all his wounds, yet the smile on his face didn’t falter. The man charged at Noel, running at top speed as his blood spilled in all directions.

"I’ll make sure that I snap you in two," the man said, and though he smiled, his voice was filled with rage. Noel looked up; he had no choice, so he used the spell a second time, casting the lightning bolt.

The man blocked it with his sword. The force pushed him off the ground and slammed him into the wall again. He coughed up a huge mouthful of blood, but he wasn’t down yet.

He dropped down from the wall still breathing and standing. His sword was still in his shaky grasp, and then suddenly he started cackling wildly again.

He got on his feet again and charged at Noel again. "Now that you used that spell twice, you can’t use it again. I’ll finally kill you," he said, filled with joy.

"Hey, look this way!" He heard Riven’s voice. He looked back for a split moment and a flame blast slammed into his face; the explosion tossed him through the ground.

His face was heavily burned, but he was still not dead. He got up again, but a huge bolt of lightning struck into him. This time, it completely obliterated one of his arms, and he fell to the ground, unmoving.

"H-how... how?" he managed to ask.

"You really think I could cast only two spells? I’m a prodigy. I can do a lot more than that. I intentionally told my brother two times so that I could deceive you, and you fell for it," Noel said. He picked up his sword and walked toward the man.

Riven also came close; he could finally breathe normally again. "You really did a good one there," he said to Noel.

"Shove your compliments up your ass," Noel responded harshly and turned his eyes to the man. He raised his sword, looking at the man’s face that had finally lost its smile.

His sword stayed in the air for a few seconds. He didn’t stab; he just stood there. Riven looked up at his brother’s face and saw that his eyes were quivering.

"You haven’t killed someone before," Riven said.

"Shut up!" Noel shouted.

"There’s no need to force yourself. Death isn’t something easy. You can take a step back and I’ll handle it," Riven said and grabbed his sword.

"Stay back! I’m the one killing him," Noel yelled and pointed his sword at Riven.

"Now is not the time for this. Allow me to do what you can’t do. It’s not a matter of pride—killing is hard," Riven said.

"And you’re supposed to be better at it?" Noel yelled.

While this argument happened, the man suddenly bit into a round pill hidden within his teeth. Immediately, a red fog spewed out of his mouth and encircled him. It covered him entirely, and when it vanished, the man had disappeared, leaving two stunned boys looking at the ground.
