Chapter 62: First Floor

"Each of you will carry this strip in, and only remove it when you are outside. You’ll have twenty-four hours before the exams round up.

Only five hundred of you with the highest scores will make it through the first exam. All you have to do is to get points, and you get points by getting crystals.

Crystals found on the first floor are only worth ten points, unless it is a floor boss, and that’s worth a hundred points in total.

The second floor gives a hundred points per crystal, and if you manage to find a floor boss and defeat it, you will get a thousand points.

The same method continues down to the fifth floor. Though the fifth floor is part of the exams, we highly advise that you know your own strength and farm points in a level you believe to be your level.

If you choose to go beyond the scope of your strength and get in trouble or in the worst-case scenario you die, the academy has no hands in that.

The time will begin counting the moment all of you are inside the dungeon." The man finished speaking and snapped his finger, a small circle appeared in front of him and the strips came flying out and latching onto the hands of everyone that was there.

When everyone had gotten a strip, he moved out of the way and spoke, "Let the exams begin," he said as the candidates immediately rushed in.

Riven on the other hand just sat on the rock, watching the others rush in. Noel walked up to him from behind.

"Aren’t we going?" he asked.

"Oh, you’re back, traitor. Either way, there’s no use in rushing, it’s not like there is a limited supply of monsters after all.

Also, look around at the people staying back—the prince and the princess are standing, the daughters of the Dukes are also standing, those wives are standing and some more formidable candidates.

They all know one thing, and that’s the fact that rushing is pointless. Their aim is not to rush and go kill some first floor monsters, their aim is to enter when everyone is already deep inside, then they will have more space to kill the monsters without anyone distracting them," Riven explained.

"That makes a lot of sense, the crowd will make everyone try to kill whatever monster they see, when there is supposedly an unlimited amount inside," Noel said.

He sat down beside Riven and watched quietly, waiting. After a few minutes, almost everyone had finally gone inside. Riven got up and headed inside as well.

"Let’s go, bro," he called out to Noel. They both made their way to the gates and walked into the dungeon.

"Straight for the second floor, right?" Riven asked.

"Straight for the second floor," Noel responded.

They chose a path and began walking through. They could hear some noise up ahead, which meant some candidates were up ahead.

Four goblins spawned in front of them and charged in. Riven and Noel moved at the same time, drawing their swords almost simultaneously.

Riven took the two to the right and Noel took the ones to the left. They used one slash each to cut them down.

Their crystals fell to the ground after the bodies decomposed. Riven picked up two and placed them into the strip, and immediately the rubes glowed up and showed his points.

[20 points]

Noel did the same and got the same amount of points.

"This first floor will definitely not give us enough points, let’s rush into the second," Riven said and began walking.

They walked for a bit and ran into another group of three goblins. Noel took out two and Riven took out one.

With forty and thirty points, they pushed forward. The sounds of swords clashing filled the air as they walked close—they could already tell that a group was fighting some monsters.

When they took the turn, they saw three candidates, two boys and a girl. The three of them were dressed in simple clothes. The boys held swords while the girl had a magical staff and she was summoning water magic.

Their opponents were four goblins that were rushing at them with maces and rusted swords.

"Protect Linda, make sure she lands the attack!" one of the boys yelled and the other boy nodded in response. They wanted to keep the goblins away until the girl had finished her spell.

But it seemed the goblins knew their plan. One suddenly leaped up the group, clung to the wall and jumped from there, headed for the girl.

The boys watched in shock as the goblin flew over their heads and they could barely do anything to stop it.

Suddenly, a sword spun through the air and stabbed through the goblin, pinning the goblin to the wall. The boys stared at the blade that was now inside the goblin on the wall.

They turned to see who threw the sword and saw Riven and Noel. The goblins turned as well and rushed at them, but Noel took them out immediately without much struggle.

The three watched in shock; they couldn’t believe that the monsters that gave them a hard time were taken out so easily.

Riven walked past them and pulled out his sword from the wall. He turned and faced the group after pulling it out. "You can have the crystals," he said and walked to Noel.

"You shouldn’t give gifts in a competition like this. You need every point, and you shouldn’t give them to commoners especially," a voice came from behind. Riven and Noel looked behind them and they saw two boys walking toward them, one wearing full body armour and the other wearing a mage’s garment.

He could already tell that these were nobles and he already knew that they were here for trouble. He could sense the cold bloodlust hidden deep inside their minds.

"It’s not a gift if they were the ones that found the monsters first," Noel said.
