Chapter 307 - 273 Sawada Playing Aladdin
Friday, May 1, 1992, Night
Friday night found Sawada arriving home, drained from a long day at ZAGE's PC division but eager to unwind with a game. Despite his exhaustion, excitement bubbled under the surface. He had been anticipating this moment all week. The latest batch of ZEPS's April releases had been impressive, Only Aladdin was the game he hadn`t played. As he entered his room, he barely took the time to drop his bag before grabbing the game box. He opened it with the enthusiasm of a kid at Christmas, pulling out the familiar items: the game cartridge, the ZEPS Wow!, the game manual, and the Zabo-man card. This time, the card read, "When You Fly, look around and you might see me." Sawada chuckled, shaking his head. "So Zabo-man is just a cameo in this game? Hehehe... Phew, well, I might not be part of the console division, so I still don't know the plot of ZAGE console games." He paused, examining the card again. The hint seemed cryptic. He wondered how Zabo-man would appear this time.
Grinning, he inserted the cartridge and powered on the ZEPS. The title screen burst to life with an energetic 8-bit rendition of A Whole New World. Sawada leaned back, nodding to the catchy tune. "Man, Boss Zaboru really knows his stuff when it comes to music," he murmured. The melody had a way of lifting his mood, washing away the fatigue of the day. After a moment, he selected New Game.
The opening cutscene introduced Aladdin, a street-smart, kind-hearted thief from Agrabah longing for a better life. After a chance encounter with Princess Jasmine, Aladdin found himself pursued by palace guards for stealing food to survive. In the heat of the chase, he revealed his generous heart by sharing with those who had even less than he did.
As gameplay began, the lively marketplace setting tested Sawada's platforming skills. Aladdin could throw apples to disarm enemies or perform jump attacks to take them down. The platforms required precise timing, with moving obstacles keeping him on edge. Abu, Aladdin's monkey companion, followed along, uncovering hidden items scattered throughout the stage. Aladdin could glide using his cape by holding the jump button mid-air, creating exhilarating moments over hazardous gaps.
"Man, this is actually pretty challenging," Sawada admitted as he narrowly avoided a falling barrel. Eventually, he reached the first boss, Gazeem the street merchant.
"You little thief! You're gonna pay for that!" Gazeem shouted, hurling pots at Aladdin.
Sawada maneuvered past the flying pottery, using well-timed jump attacks to stun Gazeem. It took a few attempts, but he eventually sent the merchant packing. The screen faded into another 8-bit cutscene.
Aladdin was captured by the palace guards. Princess Jasmine was taken back to the castle, and Aladdin was locked in a dungeon. There, he was approached by a mysterious old man.
"Young man, do you seek wealth and freedom to change your life? Venture to the Cave of Wonders and retrieve the magic lamp. It will grant your deepest wishes. If you agree, I will release you from this dungeon," the old man said.
Abu squealed excitedly, tugging on Aladdin's sleeve. "Alright, alright! Let's go!" Aladdin exclaimed. "We agree, old man!" The old man freed Aladdin.
Before they left, the old man handed him a sword. "For self-defense. The desert is filled with dangers."
"Thanks, old man," Aladdin said with a smile. As they departed, the old man transformed into Jafar, The evil Sorcerer Cloaked in dark robes.
"Tempting, huh?" Sawada muttered, grinning as the game shifted to the next stage.
The desert level was more challenging, filled with scorpions, jackals, and snakes. The sword mechanics added a new layer to the gameplay, requiring timing and positioning to take down enemies effectively. Sawada gripped the controller tighter as the platforming sections became increasingly difficult. The sword mechanics added depth to the gameplay. Players needed to press up and the X button simultaneously to perform an Sword strike, making it essential for dealing with near enemies.
"Man, this is actually harder than I thought," he groaned, narrowly avoiding falling into a pit. The heat waves on-screen made the atmosphere feel oppressive. The longer he played, the more invested he became.
Eventually, he reached the Cave of Wonders. The level was filled with traps, falling platforms, and aggressive snakes and bats. The atmosphere was tense. After countless retries, he reached the heart of the cave where the treasure glittered. A strange blue carpet caught his attention.

"What the hell is that?" Sawada laughed. The carpet appeared sentient, bouncing around playfully and even Walk with like it has Feet!.
He continued the Stages until he finally found the magic lamp. But just as Aladdin grabbed it, Abu was tempted by forbidden treasure.
"No, Abu, don't touch that!" Aladdin shouted in the cutscene, but it was too late.
The cave began to collapse. The escape sequence started. Magma filled the screen as the camera scrolled forward automatically.
"What the hell?!" Sawada shouted, caught off guard, because he never experienced platformer stages like this he really was not used to it.
He died. A lot.
"Damn it!" he groaned. The sequence required precise timing to avoid falling debris and rising lava. After numerous retries, he reached the end of the sequence, where Aladdin and Abu seemed trapped and no other ways around because filled with magma. The 8 bit cutscene played again.
"Whoa! What should we do!?" Aladdin shouted.
Suddenly, the blue carpet swooped in, lifting them into the air. The game shifted again, this time to a flying carpet sequence where players had to dodge obstacles while soaring through the collapsing cave.
"Whoa! Another gameplay change?!" Sawada was amazed. He guided the carpet through narrow passages filled with falling rocks and bursts of magma. It took several tries, but the challenge was exhilarating. The fast-paced music added urgency. Each retry intensified his determination. Some obstacles required anticipation rather than reaction.
As he weaved through the final stretch, a massive boulder narrowly missed the carpet, crashing into the lava below. Sawada let out an audible gasp. His hands trembled, his palms slick with sweat. One last set of falling rocks blocked the way out. He squeezed the jump button just in time to clear the final hurdle.
As the screen faded to black, Sawada leaned back in his chair, breathless but grinning. "This game is so damn fun!" He rubbed his eyes, realizing he had already played for 2 hours!. He had lost track of time.
The save screen appeared. He debated continuing or calling it a night. Ultimately, he decided to pause a bit, he was a little bit thirsty and tired and he wanted to savor the experience. ZAGE had done it again. Another masterpiece. He leaned back with a contented sigh, already excited for what the next level would bring. But first, he needed water.
