Chapter 42: Chapter 38: Armory

"Hey! What the hell are you guys doing?!"

Just as tensions were escalating, Lou Shasha squeezed out of the crowd with a Grenade Gun, followed closely by the tall Lou Ye, who had a machine gun in hand.

"We’re together, Qian Yu, dare to shoot if you’ve got the guts."

Lou Shasha was young and not very tall, but she stood in front of Lin Xian and KIKI with the heavy weapon, giving off the fierce vibe of a tough little sister.

Qian Yu swept his gaze over the few people staring them down, his expression changing uncertainly before he finally bit the bullet and backed down.

"Bro, no offense, I just think you two are really impressive. I was purely admiring and aiming for cooperation. If I’ve offended you, please forgive me."

"Yeah, that’s right..."

At this point, Tang Hai finally chimed in, acting like a peacemaker.

"Let’s not get agitated, folks. Our lives are at stake here. This fog has trapped everyone, let’s focus on our current situation first. As for other grudges, we can talk about them once we’re out."

Lin Xian’s gaze suddenly turned towards Tang Hai.

"Oh really? You better think that way."

With that remark, the atmosphere suddenly turned a bit eerie.

Tang Hai’s eyes twitched slightly as he looked at Lin Xian’s expression and chuckled lightly,

"Of course, I know there is a lack of trust between us. It’s fine, I don’t trust you guys either. But our goal is the same - to survive."

He said this and turned to point at the people behind him,

"We’ve been living in this air-raid shelter for a few months now. There are dozens of us here, and everyone wants to live. Bringing you in is a huge risk for us - doesn’t that show our sincerity in working together?"

"Air-raid shelter?" Lin Xian’s eyes scanned the distant mountainside. "Can we stay in there tonight?"

"Of course!"

"Everyone can rest in the air-raid shelter tonight. It’s relatively safer inside." Tang Hai immediately told the leaders of the various teams, seemingly showing his good faith.

His nephew, Feng Yuming, then said, "Uncle, with so many people, can’t it get crowded in there?"

"We’ll just squeeze in a bit." Tang Hai heaved a sigh. "It’s not that small inside."

Opening the air-raid shelter for everyone did dissuade some doubts.

However, even though he made the suggestion, no team leaders onsite responded, each with peculiar looks in their eyes.

"No need for us, our people won’t leave the vehicles and will keep watch all night."

Qian Yu was the first to respond. After the earlier stand-off cooled down, he just gave Lin Xian and KIKI a cold glance before turning to leave.

The leaders of the other teams also declined one after another,

"We’ll pass."

"We’ll just regroup tomorrow."

"We feel the same..."

Seeing no one respond, Tang Hai didn’t say much, but Feng Yuming looked annoyed, "Tsk, nowhere in the vehicles is as safe as inside the air-raid shelter, these idiots."

"Yuming."

Tang Hai scolded, "Forget it; it’s good as well that everyone fends for themselves."

In fact, it was quite normal for these teams to react this way. Setting aside whether they trusted Tang Hai or not, everyone had fled together, with all their valuables in the vehicles. For them, there’s no safer place than inside their own vehicles where they can escape at a moment’s notice if danger arises. Under these circumstances, who would go to your air-raid shelter?

At this point, Tang Hai looked at Lin Xian, "I’ll have Yuming take you in. Just find any spot and settle down for a good rest. Tomorrow we’ll need more help from the two of you..."

"In times of crisis, we’re all in the same boat, no need for such polite words."

Lin Xian smiled politely, which was exactly what he had hoped for.

He was intending to investigate the air-raid shelter anyway, though there were a few good treasures in the courtyard outside, he couldn’t possibly devour mechanics in front of hundreds of people. So, taking this opportunity to gauge Tang Hai’s intentions was perfect.

Unexpectedly, he had actually agreed.

So even though he smiled politely on the surface, Qian Yu’s heart was somewhat suspicious.

Tang Hai’s actions were faultless, even to the point of foolishness in this post-apocalyptic world. But as Tang Hai brandished the banner of cooperation for survival, Lin Xian was momentarily at a loss as to what this man’s true intentions were.

Therefore, all he could do was refrain from expressing his doubts. Since they couldn’t leave the fog, he decided to quietly observe the situation with KIKI.

At this time, he was about to enter the air-raid shelter to take a look, but hesitated when he saw Lou Shasha nearby.

Seeing Lin Xian’s gaze, Sha Sha quickly waved her hands, pointing towards the pickup truck, "You go ahead, my brother and I are used to sleeping in the vehicle."

"Be careful," Lou Ye also uttered a few words.

Lin Xian nodded, made his way through the crowd around the various vehicles towards the direction of the air-raid shelter at the foot of the mountain, with KIKI hastily following.

"Hey, bad guy, our motorcycle is still up on that vehicle."

"Do you want to drive it into the air-raid shelter?"

Lin Xian replied, as he walked, he suddenly felt a gaze and turned his head to see Feng Yuming, who was with Tang Hai, catching up.

"Hey, brother, it’s all our people inside, mostly ordinary folks."

KIKI frowned upon hearing this. She didn’t immediately grasp the implication of his words and blurted out, "Ordinary people... what about them?"

Lin Xian sighed, saying calmly, "We’re just looking for a place to rest for the night, we won’t disturb you."

The uncertain gaze of Feng Yuming scanned over the two of them but didn’t say much more, proceeding to lead the way.

Ascending the slope, the first thing that came into view was a freight platform, with a rail track piercing through the foggy valley, and beyond the platform was the entrance to a large air-raid shelter.

And on the mountainside above the air-raid shelter, there was a Type 1130 Close-in Weapon System outlined in the mist, majestic and imposing. Lin Xian was shocked, having only seen such a thing on TV before and was surprised to encounter one in the flesh.

It was evident that this was no ordinary military outpost.

Entering through the iron door, the first sight was a vast hollowed-out space within the mountain, designed to house various combat vehicles and supplies.

The hangar inside the air-raid shelter was now empty. Lin Xian thought that the jeeps of Tang Hai and his group were probably scavenged from here.

Passing through the empty hangar, Feng Yuming led the way down a staircase. In the underground facility, the survivors from Tang Hai’s group were scattered around the hall, eating. They were mostly ordinary people from North Bay County, men and women with families, sitting in various corners of the basement.

From Tang Hai’s words, it was understood that there were initially more people, but as days passed, the number of the dead grew, and many became silent and despondent, with a sense of hopelessness pressing on everyone’s hearts.

"There’s a storage, dormitory, operations room, and even an armory over there, stay wherever you like," Feng Yuming indifferently introduced them and was about to turn away and leave.

"Armory?" Lin Xian frowned.

"There’s nothing left." Feng Yuming turned back with a speechless sneer, "If there were any good things, we would have already taken them. Why would we leave them for you?"

After that, he turned and left contemptuously.

Lin Xian watched his departing silhouette and, raising an eyebrow, said nothing. Under the gaze of those survivors, he directly led KIKI towards the armory deeper down the hallway.

"Hehe, I knew you would definitely come here."

KIKI looked at Lin Xian with a smug face, "It’s a pity though, this place has been cleaned out pretty thoroughly."

"Eh, what did that guy mean by saying everyone here is just an ordinary person?" KIKI suddenly asked.

"Don’t you see that we two have now become the biggest threats here?"

Lin Xian continued as he walked,

"Haha, he’s afraid we’ll rob them."

"It’s normal, a superpower user can be the core of a convoy. We are two people on our own, it’s natural for others to feel threatened."

This air-raid shelter was not just a simple hideout. Although it was only a small military base outside, the shelter beneath harbored a complete underground facility with an information warfare room, armory, storage area, dormitories, and other facilities.

"A really good hiding place indeed."

It has to be said, this was indeed a natural shelter for the apocalypse. With sufficient supplies, it could house at least 50 people for more than six months. However, Lin Xian saw that while the survivors had plenty of military vehicles, guns, and ammunition, they seemed to be struggling with food supply. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be thinking of fleeing before the extreme nightfall.

Opening the door to the armory, only rows of empty shelves remained inside. Aside from anti-toxic masks, helmets, and other useless things, the rest had been thoroughly looted by Tang Hai and his group of survivors. The whole armory was filled with a stench of excrement, nauseating to anyone who entered.

KIKI covered her nose and backed out, "Let’s go somewhere else."
