Chapter 35: Nonexistent Conscience

When they arrived at the supermarket, they found that it wasn’t open yet.

Wang Xin and Ah Qian, seeing that the supermarket wasn’t open, found a place nearby to rest, and while resting, they didn’t dare to sit down,

afraid of getting their clothes dirty.

“Brother Wang Xin, when does it open? Are we too early?” It wasn’t even dawn yet. Ah Qian pinched his thigh, feeling very sleepy.

“Better early than late,” Wang Xin said with calmness, arriving early was always better than being late.

“Brother Wang Xin, I’m so hungry.” Ah Qian rubbed his belly, last night’s meal had already been digested.

...

“Endure it.”

It’s easy to adapt from frugality to luxury, but difficult the other way around. Ah Qian was used to eating simple wild vegetable gruel and being hungry every day, but after eating such a good meal last night, he now found he wasn’t used to being hungry.

If only he could eat his fill every day.

When would he grow taller and stronger? If only he could awaken his superpower, then he could catch mutant beasts and everyone could eat their fill.

During the wait, Ah Qian stared at the snacks inside the supermarket through the glass, feeling very hungry.

Ah Qian was young and had never known about snacks before; it was only the day before, when he came to buy instant noodles, that he heard a Superpower User express the desire to buy snacks.

That was when he learned those were snacks.

More expensive than instant noodles and not filling.

At the time, Ah Qian found it unbelievable, wondering why buy them if they don’t fill you up.

He didn’t understand.

Ah Qian knew snacks weren’t filling, but he knew they were edible.

Now with his stomach grumbling again, Ah Qian could only stare at the snacks inside and tell himself, seeing them was as good as eating them.

Wang Xin heard Ah Qian’s muttering but didn’t say anything.

They waited, and it turned into hours.

After Su Yinhe finished her breakfast and just opened the doors of the supermarket, Wang Xin and Ah Qian came in.

“Boss, we’ve arrived,” Wang Xin said to her with a slightly ingratiating smile.

“So early?” Su Yinhe was startled by the sudden entry of the two.

“As we should.”

Su Yinhe had thought the first to arrive would be customers, not realizing it would be employees.

She looked at the two of them, feeling a bit awkward.

“Er… start by organizing the shelves. Do you know how?”

“Yes, yes,” Wang Xin responded quickly. They both nodded without stopping.

“Go ahead.”

Although Ah Qian had already come in to buy instant noodles the day before, he was still amazed to see the supermarket shelves full of snacks again today.

“Brother Wang Xin, the boss has so many snacks and instant noodles, how long will it take to eat them all?” Ah Qian looked at the bulging red bags on the shelf and felt like reaching out to touch them, but he withdrew his hand halfway.

You shouldn’t touch without permission.

“I don’t know.” No matter how smart Wang Xin was, he couldn’t calculate that.

As they walked along, they unintentionally reached the shelf with instant noodles.

“With so many instant noodles, we could eat our fill of them every day,” Ah Qian said, looking at the noodles on the shelf with envy.

Wang Xin didn’t think so, as wealthy as the boss was, someone who had everything, must have gotten sick of instant noodles long ago. He wouldn’t be eating instant noodles every day.

“By the way, Brother Wang Xin, you didn’t swap the earrings,” Ah Qian suddenly remembered, they hadn’t changed money when they came in.

“We’ll exchange them when we go back,” Wang Xin hadn’t forgotten, but he didn’t plan to change money so soon, as doing it too early would make him lose the mood to work. Then he would just keep thinking about buying instant noodles, and after buying them, thinking about eating them.

“Alright, stop looking, let’s get to work.” After glancing at the bags of instant noodles, Wang Xin withdrew his eyes, fearing he would crave them if he looked any longer.

“Okay.” Ah Qian’s stomach was growling even louder, but he listened well to Wang Xin.

The two of them organized the shelves together, and as they did, both were filled with immense dedication; these were, after all, edibles. They were extremely careful, arranging every item neatly and in order.

As Ah Qian placed them, thinking of them as food, he kept swallowing saliva, with the taste of the instant noodles he ate last night still seeming to linger at the tip of his nose.

But no matter how many times Ah Qian swallowed, he didn’t stop moving his hands, nor did he think of secretly hiding a few packets away.

The supermarket was vast, and their work was meticulous and slow, so it took them the whole day to finish organizing. By the time they were done, the sun was almost setting.

Su Yinhe hadn’t expected them to be able to arrange from morning until afternoon; she had even prepared lunch for them, waiting for them to come out and eat at midday.

But when noontime came, she waited a long time without seeing anyone come out to eat.

Checking the surveillance, she found they were still organizing, with no intention to come out for a break at all.

What diligent employees, not even needing a lunch break.

If her boss, Zhou Bapi, had seen this, he would certainly have been pleased. He had previously complained about employees going out for lunch, hoping they would work while eating.

Her two employees, they didn’t eat at all.

Since they didn’t come out with the intention to eat, Su Yinhe didn’t feel it right to disturb them, so she could only pack up their lunches.

Thinking of their skin-and-bones appearance, she had especially stuffed a good amount of rice into the boxes.

“Boss, we’ve finished organizing,” Wang Xin and Ah Qian stood in front of her, feeling a bit apprehensive, realizing they might have been a bit slow as they noticed the time of day.

“Good. Thank you. I’ll give you… 50 each as wages.” Su Yinhe didn’t give too much, 50 each, 100 for the two of them. That was enough to buy 40 packs of instant noodles, enough for them to eat for a while. Giving too much, those two little ones wouldn’t be able to carry it home.

“Wages? 50!” Ah Qian cried out excitedly.

“Wages… do we have wages?” Wang Xin’s eyes widened, weren’t those five sticks of sausage their wages?

“Yes, go inside and take whatever you want.”

When Wang Xin and Ah Qian heard this, they didn’t hesitate for a second and dashed inside.

They had to buy everything before the boss changed her mind!

At 2.5 per pack, they had 100 together, enough to buy 40 packs of instant noodles. So this time, Wang Xin didn’t pick them up one by one but rather carried out a whole box.

Having unexpectedly scored a box of instant noodles today, Wang Xin also didn’t plan to exchange the golden earrings for money. A box was already plenty, and it was too conspicuous. Since they hadn’t called for backup today, he feared being robbed.

This golden earring should be kept in case they got robbed, so they could buy more.

After Wang Xin and Ah Qian paid for the instant noodles, they approached Su Yinhe and earnestly thanked her.

“Boss, you’re really a good person.”

Suddenly getting a compliment from Su Yinhe: “…”

“Boss, let me come help you mop the floor tomorrow.” Ah Qian’s eyes shone brightly, he proclaimed her the best person in the world. They had hardly done anything, and she had given them a box of instant noodles.

To Ah Qian, arranging things wasn’t considered real work. He remembered helping with construction, moving bricks and repairing walls until his hands peeled and he was too exhausted to get up—that was real work.

“That’s not necessary.” It wasn’t right to always employ child labor, even a nonexistent conscience would hurt.

“So…” Ah Qian racked his brain, constantly thinking if there was something else he could help with.

“Cough, right, this is your lunch. You didn’t come out to eat at noon, so I packed it for you. Take it home and eat it. But it’s cold now, remember to heat it up.”
