Chapter 29: Hunting Season

Aiden walked out to see the wolves carrying food packs, batteries, and water cannisters out of unit 1515, the makeshift warehouse.

They loaded the resources into the elevator and sent them down. Minutes later, new crates were sent back up in their place. Handguns, assault rifles, even homemade explosives.

Apart from weapons and ammunition, bags full of the survivor camp’s currency were also carried in. Aiden was planning to use their currency for further trades until he established a currency of his own.

I didn’t think they’d use the elevator in this way. Then again, it’s better than carrying them on their backs for nearly ten floors.

Aiden stepped inside the warehouse to check the guns. Despite all his adventures in the Otherworld, he hadn’t once used such weapons. It had been a fantasy of his in the fantasy world.

Now that he had them, he was itching to use them. But there was a small issue.

"Damian, was it?" Aiden asked, stopping one of the wolves.

"It’s Marcus Holloway, sir," Marcus replied, saluting Aiden.

"...at ease. Given how prompt you were to salute me, I assume you know how to use these weapons?" Aiden said, pointing at the scoped rifle.

"Yes, sir!"

"Good," Aiden nodded and quickly gave Marcus a new quest.

"Sir, I already have an ongoing task—" Marcus explained, looking at the other two moving the boxes.

"It’s fine, reject it. I’ll waive the punishment."

With a wave of his hand, Aiden did just that. Not only was Marcus not punished, but he even received more rewards than mentioned. He looked up and noticed Aiden’s burning gaze.

Don’t tell me he’s one of those...

The game fanatics.

There were a lot of them in the early days of the apocalypse. Most of them had little to no formal training and attempted weird ’tricks’ like canceling grenades after pulling the pin and whatnot.

Naturally, the grenades did not get

canceled

, only the arms holding them did. They alone caused more chaos and destruction than the monsters initially did.

Marcus looked around the warehouse, which looked more like an armory now, before his gaze fell back on Aiden. The puppy eyes he had while holding a sniper rifle was comical.

Yeah... he thinks they are toys. Fuck, now I absolutely have to teach him, or else he might blow everyone up.

"It would be my honor to teach you, sir!"

Although Marcus said that, he wondered if Old Joe had intentionally sent over explosives even though Aiden hadn’t requested for it. Since they couldn’t harm him from the outside, they gave him the tools to destroy himself.

As for why Old Joe didn’t care about the wolves and Karina being there, it wasn’t a mystery. His ulterior motives had been clear to everyone but Karina. No matter what he did, she would always back him up unconditionally.

It was as if he had firm control over Karina’s mind. In fact, the first time she went against him was during the negotiation with Aiden himself.

Marcus made a mental note to mention his thought to the rest of the crew later. For now, he grabbed the rifle Aiden was holding. He would have tried snatching it away if Karina hadn’t already told them about his strength. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

"Sir, if you will," he said, extending his arms.

Aiden gave him the rifle, and the two headed to the balcony attached to the warehouse. Aiden would have opted for the terrace if only the system had allowed him.

"You might not know this, but most modern weapons prove useless against monsters," Marcus explained. "Perhaps it was done intentionally to increase the value of Evo-Gear, but it’s just my personal theory."

"However, just like everything else on this accursed planet, there are exceptions. Just like this beast of a weapon," he said, hitting the bolt-action sniper. "It is thanks to weapons like these that survivor camps still exist."

Marcus then explained to Aiden how they had categorized different weapons that were effective against monsters, even if they didn’t outright kill them. It greatly helped those with Evo-Gear to finish the job.

One such weapon was the Remington magnum variant, which Marcus was holding. It was an old weapon, but one that packed a solid punch if used correctly.

In addition, since it was demilitarized decades ago, most avid hunters in the area used it prior to the apocalypse. The only downside of using such weapons was the lack of ammunition.

Unlike arrows, bullets couldn’t be retrieved from corpses. Though there were evolvers with crafting talent, the crafted bullets came with the risk of breaking the weapon or misfiring.

"You don’t have to worry about that," Aiden cut him off there.

Marcus waited for Aiden to explain why it didn’t matter, but he didn’t, so he continued with the demonstration.

"Remington uses armor-piercing rounds. It can be used to chip away ’armor’ of monsters with thick hides, or one could also use it to blow a goblin’s head away from range."

Almost as if on cue, a small group of goblins appeared into view. It seemed the noise of the carts brought from the survivor camp had attracted them.

"Perfect timing," Marcus mumbled and sucked in his breath.

His one eye remained closed as he lined up the shot, tracking the furthest goblin in the group. It was their leader, a hobgoblin. As for the rest, the guards from the camp could deal with them.

BANG!

The gunshot rang through the air, and a second later, the hobgoblin’s head snapped backward. A spray of blood and brains splattered on the ground as the creature fell.

The gunshot got the attention of the guards below, who chased away the goblins. Surprisingly, they even managed to kill a few with arrows.

"Interesting," Aiden said, grabbing another rifle. "Let’s have a try then, shall we?"

He, too, had spotted some prey.

Unfortunately, they weren’t monsters.
