Chapter 107: Chapter 107 Get Your Ass Up

Righteous in her own way? Maybe she went too far with that statement.

"Stop," Laurel said, remaining in her spot.

Ling Xuan did not heed her words and continued whipping herself.

Laurel closed her eyes, as the wave of pain shot through her. She didn’t know what she was supposed to do or how she could talk Ling Xuan out of it; in fact, she believed she couldn’t.

"Ling Xuan, even if you punished yourself, we still need to find out the reason why she turned infected," Laurel said, knowing that would be the only way to gain her attention.

She wiped the remaining drops of tears from her eyes, looking up to stop the tears from falling from her face.

Ling Xuan grunted as the whip hit her skin again. Her breath became slightly uneven and her teeth gritted, forcing the sound down.

Her fingers wrapped around the whip, which trembled slightly as she finally lowered the whip which was now dripping with her blood.

She exhaled deeply. The moment her eyes landed on Laurel, Laurel felt the tension in the room rising. It was as if any softness that had managed to creep its way into Ling Xuan’s heart had been forcefully stripped out. Her gaze was as cold and ruthless as the first time they had met.

"Ling Xuan," Laurel unconsciously muttered.

Ling Xuan rose to her feet, her clothes soaked in blood. She walked towards Laurel with a domineering aura.

Every nerve inside her told her to step back, but for the first time in her life, she wanted to stand up to her, even when she was aware that things might get nasty... or she might break trying.

Ling Xuan stood face-to-face with her. "You must be happy seeing me like this." Her voice was devoid of emotion.

"Why would I be happy when I also feel your pain?" Laurel asked back.

Ling Xuan’s eyes narrowed. "From now on, I decide who enters and leaves the fortress, while you focus on farming."

Laurel’s fist clenched by her side. "No, I refuse to accept it, we will both take turns in farming and we will both decide who enters or leaves the fortress. Don’t try to oppress me, Ling Xuan."

"Isn’t that how it has always been since the beginning of time? The strong lead while the weak support." Ling Xuan said with a stoic voice almost as if Laurel wasn’t worth her time or words.

Laurel exhaled in disbelief. "Is that so? As soft and powerless as the water, it can wear down a rock."

"Too sad you don’t have that much time." Ling Xuan replied, staring straight into her eyes as if daring her to utter another word.

"You can never tell Ling Xuan. I need you as much as you need me. Two can not work together unless they agree. I’ve already taken you as a sister, but you see me as nothing more than a tool, you don’t even regard me as your partner, nor as your friend.

Let’s stop here, we need to head back to the isolation center and at least calm the fear in the people’s hearts. Or you can remain here and try to be dominant over me, but that will be an impossible task, the choice is yours." Laurel said, holding her breath.

Ling Xuan’s gaze remained locked on her. "No matter how long you boil an egg it can never be as firm as a rock."

"I know, I prefer to be as versatile as the water," Laurel replied. "I’ll go out, you can take a rest." Without waiting for her reply, Laurel stepped out of the space house.

She appeared in a secluded corner. The moment the air hit her lungs, she let out a shaky breath. Her palms were sweaty and the marks of her fingers pressed tightly into her palms were visible.

Her knees wobbled slightly.

Her heart hammered in her chest continuously, reminding her of how she felt in Ling Xuan’s presence.

"Then I’ll be as unrestrained as the flames, after all too much fire makes the water dry up." Ling Xuan’s voice echoed in her head.

Laurel closed her eyes, now that she had drawn the line about one out of them would dominate against the other, Laurel wondered if she had gone too far; however, it was Ling Xuan who started it... Why should she feel guilty of her words?

Laurel did not reply to Ling Xuan’s comment. Her gaze softened the moment her mind wandered back to the situation in the isolation center. She needed to talk to Susanne’s brother.

...

In the center of Luxebridge city, the sky had darkened and now resembled the colour of dark blood.

Ronan lay on the ground staring at the ceiling. His mind had gone blank since the previous day. He didn’t know how to process everything that was happening around him.

Yet, he couldn’t help but wonder if Camile was alright and safe. The cellphone was no longer working and civilization and industrialization had taken several steps backward.

His heart grew restless as time went by, and a dark glint flickered through his eyes as someone dared to disturb his thoughts.

"Hey, you." Clark kicked his leg. "Stand up, it’s your turn to take a watch."

Ronan glared at him. How could they expect him, a Wayne, to take a watch? What a blasphemy!

"I don’t take watches, isn’t that your job Clark?" He shot with a deep frown that said he was not pleased by his pestering.

"No one cares if you were rich before, that is already considered a past life. Get your ass up and prove your worth. Don ordered that those who weren’t useful would be kicked out of the hotel." Clark said with a smug look on his face.

He had always hated the almighty air the Waynes carried whenever they came to the hotel, looking down on people like them who were considered low class in the socialite’s ranking.

Now he had the chance to make his life a living hell and he wouldn’t miss it.

"Everyone, are we tools and fools that would sacrifice our lives just so the people who consider themselves rich would contribute nothing in this dire time? This is a new world and no one would be treated nicely because they had money before. Everyone must take a watch, and no one is an exception. What do you all say?" Clark said, inciting the people’s wrath.

"Well said, everyone must take a watch!"

"Get your lazy ass up and get to your position."

"Your money is useless."

"Start moving."
