Chapter 55: Chapter 55 Tension

After a while of rest, Laurel stood up and continued working again.

She knew heat trapped within the soil needed an escape, otherwise it would stay long after the sun disappeared below the horizon.

Turning toward the irrigation channel, Laurel gathered several pale stones that lined the bank. They were warm beneath her fingers, already storing the day’s temperature.

One by one, she arranged them loosely around the planting rows, leaving enough space for airflow while creating a barrier that would absorb excess heat during the day and release it gradually after sunset. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

She knew it was not a flawless solution, but she believed what she needed now wasn’t perfection, but a quick solution.

Laurel paused, after finishing the task. She knew she had to find a way to trap moisture in the soil.

Rather than pouring water directly into the soil again, she dampened the compost first and spread a thin layer of organic mulch across the surface. The earthy scent rose gently around her, and she found herself pausing for half a breath simply to take it in.

According to the farming manual she had read earlier, mulch would trap the moisture in the soil and shield the delicate roots from the worst of the temperature swings.

Only after everything had been carefully arranged did Laurel finally step back, a fine sheen of sweat clinging to the curve of her neck, yet her breathing remained even. The herb patch before her had changed. It no longer resembled an exposed experiment left at the mercy of the elements. Now it looked sheltered, guarded in its own modest way.

Folding her arms loosely, she studied the shaded rows with a steadier gaze.

"If you are truly as rare as the system claims," she whispered toward the soil, her voice calm but resolute, "then endure this... Please." She lowered her head, as if praying to an unknown God of farming.

The status panel flickered softly in response.

[Environmental adjustment detected.]

[Soil temperature stabilizing...]

[Moisture retention improved.]

[Herb health increasing...

Dan Shen: 100% healthy

Shi Hu: 100% healthy]

A small smile touched her lips, and she dropped to the ground with a sigh. Only now could she feel the pain burning through her joints.

Now she only needed to come by daily and water the herbs with space water.

......

In another part of Luxebridge city. Outside the Severance hideout building, a female with a petite body stood right outside the gate.

Her long black hair was let loose, falling freely down her back.

The moment the guard saw her, he immediately opened the gate for her, bowing his head slightly in greeting. "Miss Camile, the boss is inside waiting for you." The guard said.

Camile gave him a curt nod, before walking inside the building like she owned the place.

Getting inside, she was welcomed by an unbearable tension that made all the hair at the back of her neck stand on end. Her bold expression slightly turned to the one of wary.

A man with a huge frame stood with his back facing her. His white long-sleeved shirt was pulled up to his upper arms. His shoulders were broad, and the shirt was tucked into his black pants.

His presence commanded respect, suffocating the air with his authority.

"Boss Mack." Camile greeted with a little smile gracing her lips, she walked closer to him, her steps slow and alluring.

"Who made you this angry?" She asked when she was blatantly ignored by him.

A dangerous glint flickered through Mack’s eyes. He turned around, his brooding gaze piercing through Camile who was just a few steps away.

"Didn’t you get the message? Why are you only coming now?" Mack didn’t hide the annoyance and dissatisfaction in his voice.

"Oh is that why you are mad? I had something that needed my immediate attention..."

Before Camile could finish her words, Mack’s hand gripped her slender neck, his fingers wrapping around it.

Her hands flailed in the air as she tapped on his hand to let go. Surprise and fear flashed through her eyes, as she never expected to be in such a predicament.

"When I call for you, you should come running!" Mack barked.

Camile nodded her head hastily, she felt her soul leaving her body, and she feared her bones were close to snapping.

Her fingers dug into his hand, but he didn’t bulge. Mack’s eyes bored into Camile’s fearful ones, the tension between them thickened so much that a knife could slice through it.

After a moment that felt like eternity to Camile, he finally let go of her.

Camile stumbled back, hitting the table behind her, her body slumped slightly over the table as she gasped for air. Unshed tears clung to her eyes, a glint of anger flashing through her eyes.

Mack adjusted his sleeves, before glancing at her again. "The location you suggested for us to build a base to avoid the apocalypse had been destroyed along with the supplies we stored there."

Camile’s gaze sharpened. "How could you let that happen?" She momentarily forgot the situation she was in. That she was losing trust in the Severance group, even when she thought she was the one controlling them.

"Don’t ask me such a question, Camile. Only you and old members of the Severance cult are aware of the location. That was our main base... so how could someone else know about the place? Who else did you tell about this?" Mack’s voice was cold and sharp like a blade.

"No one else is aware of this Mack, did you check your people properly?" Camile asked in the same tone as his.

"I have already carried out an investigation, there was no snitch among my men, and I have checked on the people who could do this, but it is not them. And that points everything back to you." Mack said, his voice deep and low. He walked closer to her, his steps slow and deliberate like a predator approaching its prey.
