Chapter 107: They are here

Ethan was the first to notice the sudden change in the surroundings; a thick mist had begun to envelop the room. Curios, he stood up and approached the balcony.

Peering outside, he saw the fog obscuring the view, turning the familiar landscape into a ghostly blur.

’A typhoon, a thunder, then fog—what’s next?.. sigh.’

Elena had warned him that this fog would soon cover the world, so he already expected it.

But, he still felt conflicted.

This fog brought even more significant challenges—crimes would likely surge as criminals exploited the situation.

Fortunately, the rain from the typhoon had significantly lessened. He quickly shared his findings, sparking an immediate discussion among them.

Elena was puzzled that the fog had arrived later than expected and worried that this fog was different from what she had experienced in her previous life.

In her past life, the fog accompanying typhoons was normal and merely obstructed visibility, making navigation challenging.

However, as years passed, the fog evolved and carried mysterious viruses. She sighed at the thought of it.

This virus had also caused little Mia to develop a lung disease.

’I hope this fog is the same as before—free of viruses. Otherwise, the starting point of this disaster will be brutal.’

"This fog just appeared out of nowhere. The troubling part is whether it carries any viruses," Ethan said, gazing out from the balcony.

"It would be hard to tell unless we experiment with it," Aunt Liza replied, contemplating taking a sample of the fog.

"It’s definitely strange. Well, the world is full of unexpected phenomena now. Let’s be cautious and wear masks," Grandpa Caldwell said, worried the fog might carry viruses.

Everyone nodded in agreement. Elena then retrieved different kinds of masks to wear, including a mini version for kids, to let them choose.

"Aunt, let’s take a sample and check if this fog is normal or contains viruses," Elena suggested. She wanted to find out if it resembled the fog from her past life.

"Okay, niece. I’ll do it now," Aunt Liza agreed, swiftly accessing her [Inventory] and retrieving the equipment needed to collect a fog sample.

"Wife, let’s also retrieve the air purifier. We might not be able to clean this fog, but at least we can improve the air quality inside the room," Ethan suggested.

Afterward, they positioned the air purifiers in every corner of the room to ensure the air was as clean as possible.

Satisfied with their setup, they gathered on the sofa to discuss the situation further.

"We can’t do anything about this fog, but we can strengthen our immunity by drinking well water regularly, especially you kids. Understood?" Elena emphasized, looking warmly at the children.

"We listen to Sister Ele," little Mia and Koby replied in unison.

Everyone chuckled, easing the tense situation. Though the disaster was spiraling out of control, they felt they could face any challenges as long as they stayed together. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

"By the way, I experimented with the well water and discovered it contains some unknown substance," Aunt Liza exclaimed by her discovery.

"This well water can be added without side effects, especially in medicine. It’s truly incredible! It has numerous potential uses." With determination, she also shared her plans to create medicine incorporating the well water, confident in its effectiveness.

"That’s great news, Aunt! Have we set up the pharmaceutical in Paradise?" Elena asked eagerly.

She had been planning to create her brand of medicine for a while, and the thought of getting started filled her with excitement, especially now that Aunt Liza had taken the initiative.

"I haven’t assembled it yet. I’m still working on the cotton processor, but once I finish, I’ll prioritize the pharmaceutical," Uncle Anthony replied, calm and reassuring.

Understanding that her husband was busy, Aunt Liza didn’t want to pressure him. "Take your time," she responded. "I’m still in the midst of experimenting. What I really need right now is an assistant."

Hearing this, Lydia quickly volunteered, even though her background was in architecture. The years spent assisting her parents were still vivid in her memory.

"Dr. Ford, I’d like to take that job. I don’t have a specific role in Paradise at the moment. As for my qualifications, both my parents are marine scientists, and I gained valuable experience helping them during my teenage years. I can assist for now while we look for someone more suitable for the position."

"Dr. Ford is so formal! Just call me Aunt Liza like everyone else," she said with a warm smile. "I’d be more than happy to have you join the Northern BlackSoil sector. What do you think, niece?"

Elena had originally intended for Lydia to create a sketch for the space, but seeing Lydia’s eagerness to help, she decided to support her choice.

"Let her be, Aunt Liza," Elena replied, encouraging. "I think it’s great that she wants to assist you for now."

Lydia smiled, clearly excited to finally have something to do in the space. She felt anxious watching everyone else busy with their tasks while she merely observed. Now that she had a role, she vowed to do it well.

"Mom, little Mia also wants to assist you!" little Mia said confidently, hugging her mother tightly.

"What can little Mia do then?" Aunt Liza asked with a smile, patting her beloved daughter.

"I’ll watch and cheer! Little Mia can also cawwy the gwass tube and... and..." she replied in her cute voice, thinking hard about what else she could do.

"Then you can think of your role later, okay? I officially announce that little Mia is part of our team!" Aunt Liza declared with a grin.

"Yay, Mom! I love you!" Mia exclaimed, jumping excitedly.

Everyone laughed at her adorable antics. The lighthearted atmosphere eased the tension brought on by the recent disaster.

After their discussion, they returned to their individual tasks, each feeling a bit more uplifted.

Elena then checked her phone for updates, hoping to find some news. She tried to reload her social media, but unfortunately, it never refreshed.

Frowning, she checked the signal and found it was completely unavailable.

’The signal in my past life continued even when the fog descended,’ she thought with a sigh. ’But now it’s changed—unavailable.’

She shared the situation with the group, and Butler Aki’s expression fell. He was the one who constantly informed everyone about new updates, and now that the signal was down, he felt helpless.

He quickly turned to the radio, but it was also nonfunctional, to his dismay.

Now, there were no further updates or information from the authorities, leaving everyone on edge. Lydia grew worried about her parents’ situation as she wondered if they were safe.

Meanwhile, the residents were in a state of total panic. The typhoon they had thought would pass quickly was now lingering, and the added fog only heightened their fear.

With no food, water, or help from authorities, anxiety and despair filled the community. Fights broke out frequently, and with the signal down, people could no longer communicate, making it difficult to share news.

Many struggled to grasp their situation, unsure of what would happen next. Some even succumbed to eternal rest, unable to carry on any longer.

As evening fell, fear gripped the building, with residents worried about becoming the next targets of criminals.

Elena, Ethan, Oslo, and Xander prepared to keep watch over their floor tonight. Andrei and Daniel wanted to join, but Ethan refused, insisting they weren’t ready yet.

"Once you finish basic combat training, then you can confront them," he said. For now, they will monitor the situation through CCTV.

As they descended the stairs, a chill in the night air made them shudder. Ethan urged Elena to put on a comfortable jacket for warmth. Elena smiled, then remembered she had packed thermal clothes.

"Here, wear this thermal clothing. It will help regulate our temperature," Elena said, handing them the clothes.

They quickly dressed and chatted while waiting for the manager to arrive. Anticipating his move, they planned to stay alert; if he didn’t show up, they would confront him directly.

They waited for a few hours when suddenly, a loud scream echoed from the lower floor, causing Elena and Ethan to exchange knowing glances. The screams came at irregular intervals.

"They’re starting. I think they’re robbing different floors simultaneously," Elena said, her ears tuned to the chaos below.

"Don’t tell me they underestimated us and just sent a few thugs to subdue us. Well, this will be fun," Ethan replied, a hint of excitement in his tone. Despite having resigned, he still occasionally missed his old job—capturing criminals and outsmarting them

Oslo quickly accessed the CCTV history from the 20th floor and saw the thugs descending in two groups.

He shared his findings, detailing their gear so everyone would be prepared for what was coming.

"Based on the file, they split into two groups and descended downstairs," Oslo reported, his eyes scanning the screen. "The rest might be heading our way."

Just then, they heard footsteps approaching their gate.

Xander leaned in and whispered, "They are here."
