Chapter 239: Mischievous baby

"Are you saying you’re opening a branch at the military evacuation center?" General Kaiser asked, eyeing the masked staff carefully as they negotiated.

A day had passed since the hailstorm, and the military had been urging the homeless residents to move into the evacuation center.

However, many remained hesitant, unsure of where they would get their supplies if the Paradise Shop didn’t come with them.

Now that the Paradise Shop would be opening a branch soon, General Kaiser let out a sigh of relief.

He didn’t think of himself as a savior—he was simply worried about the shrinking human population.

From what he had gathered through the Paradise Shop, more enemies were bound to appear in the future, and they would need every advantage to defend what was left of their world.

Oslo then met his gaze directly.

He and Lydia had been assigned to this task under Elena’s instructions.

"Yes. We’d like to request a unit to set up our shop."

"No problem. We’ll give you the best one available. When do you plan to start?"

"In two days. Are the residents going back with you?" Oslo asked, subtly trying to gather information.

"They will—especially now that you’re opening a branch for us. By the way, you’re not the one I usually talk to," General Kaiser noted.

Despite their masks and altered voices, he could still discern the differences—likely due to their height and demeanor.

"Ah, my master and mistress are on vacation. So, I’m handling things for now," Oslo chuckled.

"Wow! Must be nice working with you people—seems like there are a lot of perks," General Kaiser laughed, genuinely curious about the mysterious group.

"Our doors have always been open. If you ever want to apply, we’d gladly welcome you, General," Oslo replied, casually hinting at benefits like food supplies, fine wine, cigars, and more.

"Hahaha! As tempting as that sounds, I’m bound by duty to the military."

Oslo smiled politely. "If you ever change your mind, you know where to find us. I think that’s all for now—we’ll head back."

"Alright, I’ll be looking forward to your shop opening. Just make sure you give some discounts on the cigarettes... they’re far too expensive," General Kaiser said, extending his hand for a handshake.

"Definitely, just make sure you prepare a lot of jade and antiques to exchange for points, General," Oslo replied, shaking his head with a nod.

Soon after, Oslo stood up and saluted the military officers, showing his respect for their bravery.

He was about to open the door when he suddenly recalled Elena’s words.

"Oh, I almost forgot! Our leader warned me that a heat wave might come sooner than expected, so please be prepared."

"What do you mean?" General Kaiser asked, his eyes widening in surprise.

"I’m not sure about the full details, but that’s the message our leader asked me to pass on. And don’t worry—that information is free of charge."

With that, he and Lydia went upstairs, found a quiet spot, and entered the space.

General Kaiser then ordered his men to inform the residents that the Paradise Shop would soon open a branch at the evacuation center.

After giving the command, he quickly left the building to report the information he had received back to the military base.

As for the residents, they cheered as soon as they heard the news.

With new hope, they began packing their belongings, ready to follow the military. The building soon buzzed with activity as everyone prepared to leave.

The moment General Kaiser returned, he informed Brother Elias about his discussion with the Paradise Shop.

"Heat wave? We just had a hailstorm not long ago. Does this mean the ice age is ending?" Brother Elias asked in surprise.

"I suppose, well, that’s the message they passed along," General Kaiser replied, finally sipping the expensive wine gifted to him earlier by Oslo.

"Call an emergency meeting with the leaders here. They all need to hear this," Brother Elias instructed.

He let out a deep sigh, feeling completely useless.

No matter how much he meditated or tried to access Heaven’s vision, nothing came—almost as if he had been abandoned.

He believed everything had changed the moment he aligned himself with the Caldwell couple—especially Elena.

Still, he brushed the thought aside and began to meditate.

Despite the world being plagued by disasters, it also brought something unexpected—a miracle.

The spiritual energy around them was starting to grow thicker.

He was stunned. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

For the energy in this area now felt just like the kind found on the mountain near the monastery where he used to meditate.

’Things are really going differently,’ he thought.

"Alright, I’ll be right back," General Kaiser replied, gulping down the rest of the wine and standing up to order his men to summon the high officials for an urgent meeting.

Meanwhile, Oslo and Lydia visited Elena’s house to report on their negotiations.

"General Kaiser was easy to talk to and promised us the best unit for the shop. Also, the residents have already started leaving one by one," Lydia said as she peeled apples for Elena.

With Ethan not around, she felt cozy being with her benefactor. She sighed quietly—Ethan usually took up most of Elena’s time, keeping her busy.

"I see. Alright, I’ll let you handle the shop branch at the military evacuation center, together with Ramon and Jessa," Elena replied, then thanked Lydia for the fruits.

"Noted. How’s the chief?" Oslo asked, cutting in with concern about Ethan.

"He’s stable, but there’s still no sign of him waking up," she said, sounding helpless.

"Everything will be fine. But look at your eye bags—you really should get some rest. If Ethan sees you like this, he’ll definitely scold us for not taking good care of you," Lydia teased.

"He wouldn’t dare," Elena laughed.

It wasn’t just worry that keeping her up—her baby was very active at night, making it hard for her to rest.

"Don’t worry about me. It’s just the pregnancy."

"Oh? How’s the baby?"

"Mischievous as usual," Elena smiled. "They’ve started kicking my belly again."

Even though the baby constantly pestered her, she didn’t feel annoyed.

Instead, she felt grateful that the little one was growing strong and healthy.

"Hahaha, I think it’s probably a boy," Lydia said, looking forward for the baby to finally be born.

But Oslo raised his brows and disagreed. "Probably a girl. The chief said that whenever he called the baby ’princess,’ it would kick to show its presence."

Lydia shook her head. "Maybe it’s mad because it’s a prince and doesn’t want to be called ’princess,’ so it protested with a kick."

The two continued bickering back and forth, which made Elena chuckle. They really seemed to be getting closer these days.

"Alright, alright. Let’s leave our sister-in-law to rest. I’m heading to the rooftop to clear the ice and store some for the coming heat wave. Want to come?" Oslo asked.

"Sure, I’ll head back to the portable house first to get ready," Lydia replied, then turned to Elena. "Take some rest, Elena. We’ll go ahead."

"Okay. Be careful—and don’t forget to call the others to help with the cleanup."

They both nodded and left the house, still playfully arguing as they walked away.

Elena then went back to her room to check on Ethan. He had been in a deep sleep for six days now, with his fever rising and falling.

Sometimes, he would even frown in his sleep for reasons she couldn’t understand.

"When are you going to wake up? The baby misses you already. I don’t think they’ll listen to me during story time anymore," she whispered, gently caressing his hair.

Unbeknownst to her, Ethan was trapped in a dream—one that kept playing over and over.

In it, a couple was locked in a fierce battle against a strange, unknown creature. They were on the verge of victory when a few of their allies suddenly turned against them.

The woman was caught off guard and was about to be struck by a deadly blow when the man rushed to shield her, taking the hit and dying in her place.

The woman’s heart-wrenching cries echoed across the battlefield. With tear-filled eyes, she activated a mysterious ability and vanished into thin air.

Ethan couldn’t make out their faces; everything was blurred, like a mosaic. But despite that, he felt his heart ache—deeply torn by the woman’s sorrow.

The dream looped again and again, making him frown in his sleep. And now, more than anything, he wanted to escape this nightmare.

With nothing else to do, Elena decided to have her dinner early so she could get to bed sooner that night.

For some reason, she felt unusually tired, and even drinking well water had little effect.

She sighed, then prepared a small feast, indulging in the dishes she had been craving.

Afterward, she freshened up and lay down beside Ethan.

As always, she read a few prenatal fairy tales to the baby, her voice calm and soothing.

This made the baby remain quiet, not kicking—perhaps out of love and consideration for their tired, beloved mother.

Once she was done, she gently drifted off to sleep, peaceful and content.
