Apocalyptic World: Surviving with my husband and my cute little babies-Chapter 90: Argument
Chapter 90: Argument
For unknown reasons, the lobby was unusually crowded today. A group of people sat in a corner, watching Grandma Ford argue with an old woman who was demanding compensation.
Elena felt confused. Having just arrived a short while ago, she wondered what this compensation the old woman was talking about.
Determined to understand the situation before commenting, she approached the guard and asked what had happened. With a friendly demeanor, he explained the circumstances to her.
"The building manager is conducting a meeting regarding the robbery incidents from a few days ago. He wants to know how many people live in each unit for security purposes."
"Then why are they arguing?" Elena asked, looking at Grandma Ford and the old woman.
"Oh, that’s unrelated to this meeting. Do you see that old woman? Her unit is near that of the young man renovating the upper floor. What’s his name again..." the guard explained.
"Oslo."
"Yeah. Sigh! That old woman is difficult to deal with. Too bad for Oslo; she will never stop until she gets what she wants," the guard said, feeling annoyed because this old woman had caused a lot of trouble in the building over the years.
Elena raised her brows. She wanted to stay low-key, but if this old woman didn’t know her limits, she would start lecturing her. If the old woman still wouldn’t budge, then physical force might also be an option.
’Not easy to deal with? Let’s see about that.’
According to the guard, the upper floor was being renovated near her unit, so she informed the manager that it was too loud and demanded that it shoud be stopped.
However, Oslo and Xander complied with the rules and didn’t violate the renovation procedures, which allowed the work to continue.
Since she couldn’t stop the renovation, she changed her tactics and insisted on compensation for her daughter’s inability to sleep due to the loud noise.
What made the old woman’s claim ridiculous was that her unit sat four floors below the 26th floor. If there had indeed been a loud noise, it should have been the residents near the 26th floor who should report the incident, not her.
Of course, even if someone reported them, Oslo and Xander truly followed the rules set by the manager, so there was no way they had to comply with their demands.
Upon learning that these people were the ones living in the upper unit, the old woman then argued with them, prompting to this situation.
’So, in short, this woman just wanted to scam them,’ Elena thought.
"No, I won’t leave until you pay me compensation," the old woman said, crossing her arms and demanding it from Oslo.
"We already complied with the renovation. If you have a problem with it, talk to the manager," Grandma Ford replied, annoyed. She did not want Oslo to handle this situation, as the old woman was tricky.
"Aigoo, they’re bullying me! Look at their attitude. I just asked for a small compensation for the inconvenience they caused to my daughter and me," the old woman said, acting pitifully to sway the people present to side with her.
Well, the residents were enjoying the show, which provided them with good gossip while they got to know the new residents who bought the upper floor.
They were familiar with the old woman from the 22nd floor; she was known to be deceitful. So, they just watched her, trying to target the new residents, as they also had their own agenda. They wanted to gauge whether these newcomers were easy to bully.
"Talking with you makes no sense; we will leave now," Grandpa Caldwell’s powerful voice resonated in the lobby. He didn’t want to engage with her, as her reasons seemed foolish.
The old woman then wailed loudly in the lobby. Upon seeing her mother, the old woman’s daughter immediately joined the scene.
"Sir, please don’t bully my mom," she said sadly.
"We’re not bullying your mom. If she has a problem, she can report it to the manager. There’s no need to act like a drama queen," Grandma Ford reprimanded them.
The daughter didn’t reply but looked at Oslo with a fervent expression. When she first saw Oslo and Xander, she deemed them high-quality men. She tried to find ways to get their attention, but they didn’t even glance in her direction.
She told her mom about this, and the old woman supported her decision, prompting them to make a plan to use the renovation as an excuse.
"Why are you doing this? You don’t have to be so mean," the young woman said.
"Your mom demands compensation, so we explained to her that we follow the rules, and now she’s crying for unknown reasons," Grandpa Caldwell replied.
"We gave her a valid reason, and you accuse us of being mean. You are truly strange, miss," Grandpa Ford added.
The young woman then looked at Oslo with a pitiful expression, trying to ask for help.
"Brother Oslo," she said.
Oslo was taken aback.
’Who is this woman? Why is she calling me as if we were acquaintances?’
"Don’t call me randomly; we’re not close," he replied.
"Don’t say that; we sometimes..." the young woman paused, trying to act as if they had something going on.
Everyone who heard her couldn’t help but tease them.
A voice shouted from a distance, "Young man, you don’t have to be shy; this young woman is beautiful. You’d definitely make a good match!"
"Yeah, why are you acting like you don’t like it?" another person chimed in.
Looking at them, Elena and Ethan couldn’t help but feel sorry for Oslo; he seemed to attract some strange women now.
Oslo was furious and stared fiercely at the woman.
"Clarify yourself; otherwise, you won’t leave this lobby until you explain properly. You know I don’t know you; this is my first time seeing you."
The woman felt embarrassed. She had hoped to make them overthink, but Oslo’s response disappointed her.
’Can he really not have a clue? I’m interested in him. Well, I’m also interested in his friend; maybe I could make them both fall for me.’
The woman was having delusional moments but was interrupted when Oslo demanded again, "Speak!"
"I mean, we always ride together in the elevator. Saying you didn’t know me hurts a little," she replied sweetly.
"I don’t care; we’re not close, so stop this nonsense," Oslo sneered. He had encountered many women like her during his military missions, and he could see right through her acts.
’Does this woman think she can charm me into submission?’
Elena observed the situation; what had started as a discussion about compensation had now devolved into something else entirely.
She wanted to go home and relax after this tiring journey, but the scene before her was preventing that.
She moved closer to Grandpa Caldwell, glanced at the old woman, and said coldly, "Enough! So, what exactly do you want?"
"Compensation," the old woman replied.
"Why should we compensate you?" Elena asked.
"For making me unable to sleep. If you can’t compensate me with money, then you can allow this young man to date my daughter," she demanded, her gaze fixed on Oslo.
Oslo almost choked, while Elena was shocked; this old woman was making demands that no normal person would consider. Were they really this open-minded and shameless?
The crowd had no reaction; they were already well acquainted with the old woman and her outrageous demands, which were beyond comprehension.
"Talking to you is truly nonsense. Let’s go. If she tries to stop us, we can use physical force for self-defense," Elena sneered.
Elena disdained the old woman’s actions, but what puzzled her was that the manager was just standing there, watching them.
She could sense that he was not a good man.
’He wants to know the people living in each unit. It’s strange that he’s doing this, considering the information is already stored in the building’s database. So, he has access to it.’
Elena was deep in thought and was about to leave the lobby when she heard the young woman yell at her.
"Who are you?" the young woman asked, her tone laced with envy and jealousy as she took in Elena’s pretty face.
"None of your business, and stop pretending. Do you think no one can see through your facade? Trust me, your hypocrisy and your mother’s award-winning acting are written all over your faces," Elena replied bluntly. She was eager to put an end to the drama and go home.
She then called her team to move forward. The elevator was out of service, so they had to take the stairs. But before she could do so, the manager finally spoke up.
"The renovation was done properly, and they complied, but the fact that you still disturbed them—well, you still need to compensate them," the manager said, trying to balance the situation with a hidden agenda.
Seeing his wife annoyed and unwilling to engage further, Ethan replied, "We already compensated that apartment near us, so I believe that’s enough. Or do you want us to compensate everyone in the building?
"Oh, well, if that’s the case, I hope this argument can come to an end," the manager said in a conciliatory tone.
The old woman wanted to protest, but the manager glanced at her coldly, causing her to fall silent.
"By the way, we have a meeting. Would you like to join us?"
"This is for what?"
"The robbery case from a while ago. We are now gathering everyone’s information for security purposes."
Elena looked at the manager’s shitty eyes and soon realized.
’Robbery? Does this manager have something to do with it? Maybe he wants to ensure that the apartment they were going to rob has the same information in the building’s database, and now he’s gathering everyone’s occupation to identify who might be easy to bully.
"And they all agreed to give their information to you?" Ethan asked.
"We’re still discussing it and hoping they will for the security of our building," the manager replied.
"Look here, manager, if you truly need to ensure the safety of the people living in this residence, then hire more guards. What’s the point of us paying for your services if you can’t even protect us?" Ethan retorted.
They then climbed the stairs, not bothering with the manager’s replies, as they were excited to look for their home.
