Chapter 93: Ramon

Two lightning strikes had hit different buildings, leaving everyone stunned into silence. Afterward, the room buzzed with discussions about the shocking events that had just unfolded.

"Are these the types of disasters you’re talking about?" Grandpa Caldwell asked his grandson, his voice trembling slightly. He knew he needed to prepare, but this disaster felt beyond comprehension.

"Yes, Grandpa. As I mentioned, we must expect the unexpected. Who knows what disaster tomorrow might bring?" Ethan confirmed, then added a warning.

Everyone was silent, lost in thought when a knock on the door broke the stillness. Butler Aki opened the door and gestured for the Ford to enter.

Grandpa Ford was about to greet them and address the lightning they had just witnessed when he noticed the grim expressions on their faces. He hesitated, sensing that they were grappling with the same feelings of fear and uncertainty.

Little Mia was the one who broke the silence. She ran to her grandparents, grasping their hands and pulling them toward the room.

"Gwandpa, Gwandma, there was a flash in the sky—it’s so fwightening! Come with me, and let’s hide together."

Everyone smiled, easing the tension in the room.

They began to realize that while they might not be able to stop the disaster, they could remain vigilant. Their best chance was to use the space wisely to escape it. They needed to be smart and strategic in their actions.

"Well, we can hide later, okay?" Grandma Ford said, patting little Mia’s head.

She then glanced around at the others and added, "Have you all eaten already?"

"Not yet. Let’s eat first; we need strength to face this disaster," Grandpa Caldwell responded, feeling hungry as he observed the typhoon raging outside.

While everyone pondered what food to eat, Elena and Ethan excused themselves to visit Ramon.

"We’re going downstairs to check on Ramon. Feel free to start eating without us," Elena said.

"No, we’ll wait for you," Grandpa Caldwell replied.

"Alright, we’ll be back as soon as we can, grandpa."

As they walked downstairs, Elena and Ethan were lost in their thoughts. Elena pondered why the disaster had arrived sooner than expected and why it seemed stronger based on her observations.

’I shouldn’t rely too much on my past memories, as things might be different now.’

Meanwhile, Ethan was focused on how to ensure everyone’s safety during this unpredictable disaster.

"Wife, you mentioned earlier that a new cycle would begin. Is it starting now?" he asked.

"No, I don’t think so. In my dream, the cycle begins when most living beings in this world have awakened."

Ethan raised his brows.

’Was this situation not yet part of the cycle?’

"Are you sure? I’m not doubting you, wife, but given the circumstances, do you think it’s far-fetched to say that it hasn’t started yet?"

She also felt a twinge of doubt, but according to the book she had read in the alien library back in the future, the cycle only begins when most living beings in that world have awakened their abilities.

"Maybe the heavens are in the process of elimination right now. Those who will die don’t deserve its favor; they’re seen as a nuisance in the upcoming cycle. The heavens still have a grip on this world and are currently monitoring the situation. Once the cycle begins, they can no longer intervene."

"The heavens are so harsh," Ethan said, dumbfounded. Then, curiosity sparked within him as he wondered why they were being monitored.

"Monitoring? Why would they do that?"

"I’m not sure, but maybe they are tasked with balancing the strength of the disaster and invasion based on the awakened abilities of the living beings in this world, preparing for the upcoming cycle. Once the cycle begins, it means they have completed their balancing act and can only be passive observers, watching how these beings defend their world."

They may no longer intervene, but they have already empowered their minions to carry out their hidden agenda. But still, I believe they are bound by fairness.

The conversation ended as they knocked on the door of Ramon’s unit. A woman in her thirties opened the door, accompanied by a curious teenage boy who looked at them with interest.

"Mrs. David, I’m Ethan, Ramon’s employer, and this is my wife, Elena. We’re here to visit Ramon."

Upon realizing they were the ones who had helped them get here, she politely gestured for them to enter.

"Oh, I see. Please come in, sir. I’m Jessa, and this is my son, Andrei."

Ethan nodded in acknowledgment.

They then entered unit 2801, where Jessa guided them to Ramon’s resting area.

Seeing Ethan, Ramon couldn’t help but feel excited and full of questions. He had followed his instructions diligently and wondered if Ethan was aware of the impending disaster, which had prompted him to sell all his assets.

He wanted to stand up and greet him properly, but Ethan gestured for him to remain seated.

"Boss, you finally arrived! I was supposed to come and assist you downstairs, but my legs are making it hard for me to move," Ramon said.

"It’s fine as long as you’re doing okay. How do you feel now?" Ethan replied.

"Boss, I’m doing well. My legs were injured during the earthquake, but the doctor assured me it was just a minor injury. Aside from that, your assets have been sold as instructed, and the money has been transferred to your account."

Ethan appreciated Ramon for his efficient work and effective asset management while he was busy with his career in the military and then the police.

"Ramon, how long has it been since I hired you?" Ethan said in a serious tone.

Ramon was confused by the sudden question but answered honestly, "Approximately five years. Why do you ask, boss?"

"I don’t want to hide anything from you and your family. The disasters we’re experiencing right now are just the beginning; it may get worse in the coming days."

Panic set in their eyes as they heard Ethan’s blunt explanation. He then shared what they had experienced traveling from City D to City A. Ethan didn’t want to frighten them, but he felt it was important to inform them that the disaster was already here.

"Did you hear the thunder a while ago?"

"Yes," Ramon confirmed, noting how loud it had been as if it were right next to them.

"It struck a building."

The shock was evident on their faces, and Ramon didn’t know what to say. He simply looked at Ethan’s serious expression.

"So, what’s your plan now, Ramon?"

"Boss, I decided to follow your lead from the moment you hired me. Now that you’ve said a disaster is coming, I would shamelessly ask—please let me follow you again."

Seeing her husband’s serious answer and considering the disaster unfolding, Jessa chimed in. "Sir, please allow our family to follow you."

Elena didn’t disturb Ethan; instead, she observed their expressions, trying to gauge whether they were genuine people. She was unaware of them from her past life, as they had never crossed paths, and Ethan had never mentioned them either.

Ethan then looked at his wife for a cue. When she nodded, he replied, "Okay, I can provide you with food and shelter; in exchange for your loyalty, that’s all we need."

Ramon’s family immediately nodded, vowing to follow their lead.

"Boss, we will," Ramon said, conviction evident in his tone.

Elena summoned her Golden Tablet and briefly introduced the space to them. They were shocked, and Ramon finally realized where his boss’s assets had gone and why Xander and Olso had been running around these past few weeks.

It was because of this space. They had been hoarding materials and supplies, and the items he had brought were stored here.

"Drop a blood here," Elena said as she summoned a needle.

Afterward, she marked them with a tear-shaped symbol, granting them access to Southern Lake.

"You can now enter Paradise. I will have Oslo or Xander guide you there for a tour. For now, try to rest as much as possible. Drink this well water; it can help ease and heal your leg pain at the same time," Ethan instructed.

Ramon nodded and drank the well water.

Meanwhile, Andrei was thrilled to learn about such a magical space. He wanted to enter it as soon as possible to explore it, but he decided to wait and ask Oslo and Xander later. Over the past few weeks, he had grown close to them while helping with simple tasks.

Elena and Ethan were about to leave when Ethan remembered that they had prepared dinner, so he invited them to join.

"Can you sit in the wheelchair now, Ramon?"

"Yes, boss."

"Let’s have dinner with the team. You don’t have to go upstairs; my wife will bring you to our location later," Ethan suggested.

"Okay, boss."

Elena then added, "If you’re ready, just trigger the emergency alert by thinking and coveying the word [Emergency] to me, and I will be notified that you’ve called for me."

"We will, madam. Thank you."

"Madam is way too formal. Just call me Elena."

They nodded in agreement. Afterward, Elena and Ethan left and returned to unit 3002. As they walked upstairs, Elena informed her husband about the people they had marked.

"I’ve already marked 8 individuals out of the 100 available slots. Later, I will mark Angela and Koby," Elena told her husband.

"Okay, wife. We’ll find suitable people we can trust later. For now, wear this jacket; it’s getting colder," Ethan replied, handing her the jacket.

Elena smiled at her husband’s caring attitude but gently declined.

"It’s fine. It’s just a short walk, and once we’re inside the unit, it will be warm and comfortable."

Ethan did not persuade her. Instead, he hugged her to keep her warm.

As they returned to his grandfather’s unit, they were greeted by the lively scene inside. The people there were having a barbecue.

"We decided to have a welcome ceremony to celebrate our safe arrival," Grandma Ford said.

Elena didn’t hesitate to join in and help prepare the barbecue.
