Chapter 15 -0015: My Own Home 3_1

After hearing this, everyone laughed.

“We have no objections. If the broken house is too dilapidated, we will help with the repairs.”

“Yes indeed, what matters the most in our house are the walls and the roof. My family has gathered quite a bit of thatch, we originally planned to use it as firewood. If Qingxue needs it, it can be used for the roof.”

Feng Shuanzhu immediately answered, “No need, I’m giving her the three thatched cottages to the far west. Those cottages were abandoned less than half a month ago; the walls and roof are intact, no need for repairs.”

Uncle Feng hesitated for a moment and asked, “Isn’t it a bit too far?”

“What’s too far about it? Our production team’s territory stretches less than a mile from east to west. If anything happens, a shout will alert everybody,” Feng Shuanzhu waved his hand, “only that house is a bit better, the other houses don’t even have roofs.”

The thatch could also be used as firewood; those who were quicker had taken it away already.

Hearing this, Uncle Feng stopped talking.

Since no one else voiced objections, Feng Shuanzhu led the Feng Qingxue sisters westward.

As he said, it wasn’t far.

Soon enough, they arrived at a three-room thatched cottage with its fence torn down and no yard left.

No one had taken care of it and even though just half a month had passed, the front and back of the house looked deserted. The yellow wild grass was dancing in the autumn wind.

“Ah, when I came to see it yesterday, it was all right. Today, the two wooden doors have disappeared. I wonder whose hands were so quick,” Feng Shuanzhu stomped his foot. He led Feng Qingxue into the house, and it was dim inside.

The windows of the thatched cottage were very small and the light was weak. Fortunately, the sunlight was shining through the doorway, which allowed them to see the inside clearly.

Feng Qingxue laughed and said, “No door is fine. At least the east and west parts of the house can block the wind and rain. It’s much better than the grass shed.”

She was genuinely content.

Inside the house was empty; the original furniture had long been stolen. Only in a corner were a couple of broken porcelain bowls and a few pairs of chopsticks, most likely left because they belonged to the deceased and were very dilapidated, so no one wanted them.

Feng Shuanzhu escorted Feng Qingxue and Feng Qingyun out of the house and took them for a walk around the back.

Overgrown weeds were the only residents at the back of the house. Two ragged beds that were used to lay corpses leaned against the wall, extending three to four meters back to a river flowing southeast. On the riverbank stood a few Poplar trees, their tops the only thing left with foliage.

The leaves were falling, and the sound of the river flowed softly.

It was a bit secluded, but exceptionally tranquil.

After Feng Shuanzhu left, Feng Qingxue hugged Feng Qingyun and kissed her forehead.

“Qingyun, we have our own home now, aren’t you happy?”

“Our own home”, Feng Qingyun repeated, seeing her sister nod, she squinted her eyes happily, “that’s wonderful sister, we have our own home, we don’t have to live in the grass shed anymore.”

Who would choose to live in a grass shed if they had a house?

What pleased Feng Qingxue the most was that their location was a little distant from other people in the production team.

That is to say, it was about forty to fifty meters away from the penultimate house to the west of the production team, meaning they could cook without the smells reaching the others.

Before heading to Uncle Feng’s to pick up Feng Qingyun, Feng Qingxue took out the mantou from her basket. She also took out two bun-sized steamed cakes filled with a plain stuffing and let them cool down in the basket, simultaneously taking a small bag of rice out of her space.

If the food she brought back from begging was still hot when she got home, that would be weird.

After it cooled down, Feng Qingxue took it out, ate one herself and gave one to Feng Qingyun.
