Gu Zi smiled, her heart warmed by his words. “I’m so happy to hear you say that, and of course, I trust you. Whether it’s a brother or a sister, they’ll be family. We’ll all love them and watch them grow. I promise, I won’t ever stop loving any one of you.”

Gu Zi knew how sensitive children could be, especially when it came to something as significant as a new baby. The Su family’s three children had all been through hardships before—suffering mistreatment that had left lasting scars. Though things were improving, the children were still more sensitive, and Gu Zi understood that she had to reassure them. She didn’t want them to feel that her love for them would change just because a new baby was on the way.

She needed to make sure they understood that they were still her children, and the baby in her belly was just another member of their family.

It didn’t matter whether it was a biological child or not—if the universe had called her “Mom,” she would embrace that role fully, without distinction. She would love all of her children, no matter where they came from.

Su Li nodded, his small hand reaching for Gu Zi’s. “Mom, I’m really happy to have you. Can I touch your belly? I want to see what our new member is doing inside.”

Gu Zi was about to explain that it wasn’t good to touch her belly too often during pregnancy when Su Shen, who had been listening from inside the room, spoke up. “Mom’s still not feeling too well today. Let her rest, alright? No touching her belly for now.”

With that, he swooped Gu Zi up effortlessly and carried her back inside. Su Li huffed, pouting in frustration. One day, when he grew stronger, he’d be able to carry Mom too. By then, his dad would be old and wouldn’t have as much strength.

The thought made Su Li feel better, and he quickly cheered himself up.

In the master bedroom, Su Shen carefully placed Gu Zi on the bed, and she noticed that he had already changed the sheets and added three pillows next to her, making sure everything was as comfortable as possible. It was clear he had been paying attention to the doctor’s instructions.

“I’m feeling fine now,” she said, trying to reassure him. “I could probably go to uni tomorrow.”

Su Shen opened a bottle of essential oil and squeezed a small amount into his hand, gently massaging it onto her calves. His large hands, usually strong and commanding, were now surprisingly delicate as he worked the oil in. “I’ve already arranged for you to take a few more days off. Don’t worry about anything. Just rest.”

Gu Zi couldn’t help but laugh. “Su Shen, do you really think I’m that fragile? Well, since the main classes aren’t too demanding right now, I’ll listen to you and rest.”

Gu Zi was attending university mainly to get her degree and experience college life in this era. She wasn’t taking any elective courses unless they were mandatory, so she had very few classes to attend. Now that she was pregnant, it would only get more inconvenient as her belly grew, and she realized she might need to speed up her studies.

Su Shen looked at her seriously. “Not just these few days, you need to promise me that I’ll be the one to pick you up and drop you off from school. Don’t worry about it—I can make time for that.”

Su Shen, though a man who would never understand what it felt like to be pregnant, had learned about pregnancy at the hospital. He now understood how much a pregnant woman went through. As her husband, he felt it was his duty to do everything he could to ease her burden, even if it was just a little.

Gu Zi felt that he was overreacting, but seeing the determination in his eyes, she knew she couldn’t argue. Still, she gently reminded him, “I can agree to that, but you have to promise me that you’ll pay more attention to the children’s feelings. Don’t act so tense around them, especially when they’re concerned. Like just now, you could have explained to Su Li why he shouldn’t touch my belly before carrying me out.”

Su Shen finished massaging the oil into her legs and covered her feet with a light blanket. He looked at her, slightly puzzled. “I was just worried you might be too tired, and I was a little hasty.
