Beast Taming: I'm Really Just a Forest Ranger-Chapter 83: The Scaly Green Snake’s Prank
The sky was gloomy.
"Today’s weather is quite good, no big sun, not too hot."
Zhang Hao walked through the increasingly dense forest with two fully armed girls, while the large Gray-armored Wild Boar trudged heavily ahead, clearing the path by crashing through obstructive branches. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
"Why did you guys think of coming all the way out here?" Zhang Hao turned his head to look at the two girls, full of curiosity.
The tall girl leading the way was named Yang Yue, her skin was fair, and when she smiled, noticeable dimples appeared on her cheeks: "We wanted to find some fun; staying in the city every day is too boring."
Zhang Hao couldn’t help but mumble softly: "I’ve always yearned to live in the city, yet you find it boring."
Yang Yue didn’t get annoyed upon hearing this; she lifted the hair in front of her ear and smiled slightly: "We were hiking enthusiasts before, and now that we’ve become Beastmasters, with Pet Beasts protecting us, we naturally want to continue connecting with nature."
"Right, Cloud Fox?"
A small fox-like Pet Beast followed closely beside Yang Yue. Its body was off-white, not as pure as snow but as immaculate as a cloud, with a fluffy long tail gently swaying.
"Ying~"
The Cloud Fox trod on the dry leaves and branches, gracefully moving and slightly lifting its little face to nod at Yang Yue.
Seeing the adorable Cloud Fox, Zhang Hao couldn’t help but feel joyful, but when his eyes unintentionally caught sight of the other girl, his expression turned stiff.
This girl exuded a cold beauty from the inside out, with long black straight hair, a cold face, narrow and emotionless black eyes, all affirming this.
Most importantly, there was a long snake coiled around her body. Whenever Zhang Hao glanced over, this long snake covered in green scales would flick its tongue, its eyes cold like its owner’s.
Zhang Hao remembered the snake’s name: Scaly Green Snake, a Wood-type Pet Beast, naturally ranked as elite.
According to Yang Yue’s introduction, her friend was named Li Qing, an enthusiast of climbing and pet reptiles.
If it weren’t for Yang Yue frequently taking Li Qing out hiking, the latter would likely spend all day at home with her pet reptiles.
Though Zhang Hao didn’t understand the mindset of pet reptile enthusiasts, he respected every ordinary person with legal hobbies that didn’t affect others.
But that didn’t prevent him from instinctively distancing himself from Li Qing and her Scaly Green Snake.
"Let me clarify, I can take you only this far. Lately, strange events have been frequent in the mountains; many areas have dramatically changed, and I’ve heard there are wolves, it’s quite dangerous." Zhang Hao pointed to a location on the map.
Yang Yue nodded with a smile: "Don’t worry, we wouldn’t joke with our lives. It’s fine just to reach here."
After pausing briefly, she continued: "This time, I’m here to breathe in the fresh air of nature and also see what the wilderness looks like after the Spiritual Energy Revival."
"Once we’re fully prepared, and the Cloud Fox and Scaly Green Snake are stronger, we’ll venture further."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Hao finally breathed a sigh of relief.
As long as they’re not naïve idiots, it’s fine.
The three of them, along with their three Pet Beasts, gradually entered the area, trekking through the forest without delving deep into the Qinling, guided by Zhang Hao.
Even so, the spectacular scenery post-Spiritual Energy Revival and the occasional appearance of wild Pet Beasts continuously amazed the two girls.
Several hours later,
Zhang Hao glanced at his phone; it was already five in the afternoon, so he suggested: "It’s getting late. How about I take you back to the village to rest for the night? Tomorrow, we can explore another forest."
"No problem." Yang Yue nodded.
"Alright, let’s rest here for ten minutes and regain our strength before descending the mountain." Zhang Hao laid a plastic bag on the ground and sat down heavily.
"Qingqing, let’s rest too."
Yang Yue said to Li Qing, and seeing an extremely tall tree behind them, she first took her phone out to snap a photo of herself with the tree, then sat down leaning against it.
Li Qing followed suit, sitting beside Yang Yue.
After walking for half a day, they were both a bit fatigued and closed their eyes lightly to rest.
A gentle breeze blew, causing the Scaly Green Snake to open its emerald eyes and glance around—Zhang Hao was watching silent videos, occasionally letting out strange giggles; Yang Yue and Li Qing were resting with closed eyes, and the Cloud Fox lay in Yang Yue’s arms.
The Scaly Green Snake’s eyes glinted with a hint of cleverness, as it began slithering up Li Qing’s body. Its cold body swiftly slid up the sturdy trunk behind.
Yet the Scaly Green Snake did not stop; its triangular head gazed upward through the dense foliage, spotting a light brown figure, and with a trace of cunning, it quietly continued upwards.
As it crawled over the exposed trunk, the deep green body of the Scaly Green Snake blended seamlessly with the lush leaves, making the surrounding scenery the perfect camouflage.
Getting closer.
The Scaly Green Snake could clearly see the light brown bird; its heart started to stir, but it forced itself to calm down, slowing its pace, and continued to approach.
Within reach, the Scaly Green Snake, like a prankster, suddenly opened its mouth, its tiny teeth gleaming coldly.
"Chirp!"
However, the light brown bird seemed to sense the danger and instinctively flapped its wings to fly away at the moment the Scaly Green Snake opened its mouth.
Only a few feathers landed on the head of the Scaly Green Snake.
Realizing the prank didn’t work, the Scaly Green Snake felt bored and instinctively withdrew, ready to return to its master.
"Chirp chirp chirp!"
At this moment, the light brown bird continuously flapped its wings, emitting a rapid and continuous cawing.
"Chirp!"
"Chirp chirp!"
These calls seemed to press a mysterious switch, as suddenly, high-pitched cries echoed one after the other, waking the lightly sleeping Yang Yue and Li Qing, and making Zhang Hao raise his head in confusion: "What’s going on?"
The next moment, numerous light brown figures emerged from the sky as Violent Cloud Sparrows gathered, exuding the rogue aura of Sky Street thugs, calling loudly.
The Scaly Green Snake sensed that things weren’t right, quickly shrinking back onto Li Qing.
The Violent Cloud Sparrow that had been sneak-attacked was particularly sharp-eyed, spotting the Scaly Green Snake on Li Qing, and began chirping incessantly: "Chirp!"
In an instant, dozens of Violent Cloud Sparrows circled in the sky, surrounding the three of them.
A strong sense of oppression swept over them, making Zhang Hao involuntarily swallow his saliva and cautiously ask: "What... what’s happening?"
Yang Yue lifted her head in confusion, while Li Qing looked down at the Scaly Green Snake, which immediately shrank its head.
As a Beastmaster with a telepathic bond to the Scaly Green Snake, Li Qing instantly understood the reason behind the incident.
But given the emergency situation, she didn’t have time to explain much. While secretly deciding to apologize later, she raised her eyes to look at the two, unusually speaking: "I have an idea."
Zhang Hao’s eyes brightened: "Tell us."
"Run, hurry and run."
The cold voice, the earnest demeanor, and the absurd suggestion nearly made Zhang Hao faint.
Is this how his first private task would end in failure?
