Chapter 158: A cry for help

Roc, Uri, Xeno, and Visha sat in the square. Roc had his hand folded behind his back. He was waiting for one of the leaders to begin peaking.

"We’ve decided to help you go to the Ram to get your partners," Xeno said.

Roc visibly deflated. He let out a breath audible to everyone standing there.

"Did you think we would say no?" Visha asked.

Without preamble, Roc replied. "It had crossed my mind. I know that we weren’t the most hospitable when we first came. And although we have become a part of the pack, it is hard to know what you might be thinking."

"As long as you treat the pack and the caldera as your home, we have no reason to refuse reasonable requests," Uri answered.

Visha watches Roc visibly relax. She had to admit, it was fun to see him squirm. Especially when she remembered the issue he caused during the pack bond. Though she did not hold it against him.

And thus the journey to the Ram tribe was set. There was still a little more than half a month left before the winter snow came. They should be able to navigate the forest and mountains and return to the pack quickly enough with their enhanced power.

They decided to take a few days to pack and then leave.

The day after the departure was finalized, the trio received a report of someone banging on the gate and crying for help.

When the trio arrived, they saw more than one person. One person was particularly bloodied. The rest were from the Stone-horn tribe and River clan. Their eyes widened seeing the change in the Warm Pack.

Those at the gate were ushered into the caldera quickly. After walking in, Gorn and Mira stared at the active pack members. It was not the fact that they were all half-shifted that surprised them. The stone-horns were half-shifters to begin with, and the River Clan has seen half-shifters multiple times.

What surprised them were three things. The fact that they had grown so much in such a short time. Those who were not half-shifters before suddenly became shifters. And the fact that these half-shifters could shift completely into their beast.

If not for Xeno calling out to them to bring back their distracted minds, who knows when they would have been able to speak?

"Ah, yes, yes. We came to ask for some help," Gorn replied quickly. His eyes were still scanning the members.

"Who’s this?" asked Visha.

She pointed to the bloodied person on the ground.

"We aren’t completely sure who he is. We found him on the way. The only thing he said before he fell unconscious was the name of your pack. We assumed he was one of yours," Gorn said.

Visha stared at the bloodied man on the ground. She was certain they were not missing any members, so who was this? Still, he called the pack name, which meant he knew them. Or he was trying to implicate them. Whatever the reason, she decided it would be better to heal him.

Using the Rite of Vitality, she quickly healed the man.

After using it on the people of the pack during the rituals, she found it much easier to use.

After healing the man, she still could not recognize him. It was one of the cheetah beastmen who was walking closely by who recognized him. He did not hesitate to run over to the male who was on the ground.

"Blu!" He shook the male.

He received no answer. Blu only groaned but lay on the ground. After hearing him groan, the man stopped shaking him.

"You know him?" Uri asked.

Hika, the one who had run over, nodded. "He is one of the members who decided they did not want to stay. They left in search of a new place to live."

Visha told Hika to send him to his house so he could lie down. When he woke up, they would find out what happened. Blu was taken away. The conversation turned to the Stone-horns and the River clan.

"It’s been a while," Visha said, smiling.

"It has," Mira replied. Eyes scanning the caldera.

Gorn as usual, did not mince words. "I wish I could say we are here for a happy event. But we aren’t. Some things have been happening recents and we needed to talk to you about it."

"What’s wrong?" asked Xeno.

"People are dying," Gorn replied. "We only recently found the cause."

"Dying?" Visha asked. "Since when?"

"It has been more than a week now. At first, there were some who had gone missing. We sent people to search. Some came back, some didn’t." Gorn sighed.

"The same is happening in our River Clan. People go to the waters and never come out." Mira rubbed her face.

"Why didn’t you tell us before?" Visha questioned. "We could have helped."

Mira waved her hand. "As far as we were concerned, the disappearances were isolated incidents. It was only when we traded with the Stone-horns that we knew both our people were facing the same issue."

"We found the problem only a few days ago. A plant had been terrorizing our tribe. It moved between our people, killing them based on its whims. We have tried to attack it, but nothing seems to work."

Gorn growled. The anguish on his face was clear. This plant must have been doing a lot of havoc during this time.

"You come to use now. Why?" Uri asked.

Both leaders sighed. "We are here to seek refuge," Mira answered.

"Until we can get rid of this monstrosity, we cannot keep allowing our people to die," Gorn answered.

The utter defeat on their faces made Visha’s heart thump. She felt sympathy for their plight. But she also wanted to know more about this man-eating plant. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

If it were a problem for both tribes now, what would happen if it made its way to their tribe?

She could not afford to take the risk.
