Being Dumped by My EX, I Marriied His Older Brother-Chapter 118: A Discovery
It was Justin Kane!
He was there back then, too.
Maybe he knows something.
But then again...
If he knew Cole Kane wasn’t her savior, why would he have never mentioned it?
Nina Thorne dismissed the thought.
Back when she was rescued, only Cole Kane was by her side.
Afterward, she was sent straight to the hospital.
If Justin Kane really had been the one to save her, why would he visit her in the hospital later and not say a word about it?
’Forget it.’
Nina Thorne shifted her focus back to Cole Kane and Albert Locke.
’I’ll wait for the investigation results first.’
That afternoon, Director Aldridge called to check in. He asked why she hadn’t come to the script reading and expressed concern that something might be wrong.
He also mentioned that the first scene was scheduled to be shot tomorrow and that she needed to be there.
Nina Thorne replied that she was fine and readily agreed.
Director Aldridge was very polite. "That’s good to hear. In that case, I won’t disturb your rest any longer."
"You’re too kind, Director," Nina Thorne said with a faint smile.
’I know exactly what’s going on.’
Director Aldridge’s attitude wasn’t just dependent on the project’s popularity.
It had more to do with Justin Kane.
She didn’t care.
Having a backer, having someone looking out for you—it wasn’t something to be ashamed of.
Besides, her accomplishments spoke for themselves.
A moment later, her phone rang.
She saw a familiar, unsaved number.
’Who else could it be but Cole Kane?’
Nina Thorne expressionlessly silenced the call and set the phone aside.
She opened her laptop, pulled up a document, and calmly continued reviewing the script.
She didn’t spare the phone screen another glance.
The call came once, then again and again in quick succession.
It was a clear display of the caller’s urgent anger.
Finally, he gave up and stopped calling.
Suddenly, a loud banging sound came from her door.
It was deafening.
Nina Thorne flinched, her body trembling in shock.
She frowned.
She immediately guessed it was Cole Kane at the door.
The knocking continued incessantly, but no one spoke.
But after a moment, the person outside couldn’t hold back any longer.
An angry voice roared, "Nina Thorne, I know you’re in there! Get out here!"
"Even if you hate me, you shouldn’t have resorted to such a shameless trick! Nina Thorne, are you trying to ruin me?!"
"..."
Listening to the furious voice outside, a mocking smile touched Nina Thorne’s eyes.
’Ruin him?’
’Who was the one who plotted to drug me?’
’And who was the one who tried to force himself on me, to make it a done deal?’
’In the past, I foolishly followed him around.’
’His flaws were as big as a house,’
’but I saw him through rose-colored glasses, thinking he was the best in the world.’
’My counterattack now is simply the result of me waking up.’
Nina Thorne called the front desk. "Hello, someone is outside my door, harassing and threatening me. Could you please handle it?"
"Of course, miss. We’ll send security up immediately."
Nina Thorne hung up, her expression cold.
Cole Kane called again while continuing to shout and clamor outside the door.
"I know you’re in there! Get out here!"
"Nina Thorne, tell me, why are you being so cruel? How could you do this to me?"
"Sir, you’re disturbing our guest. Please leave, or we will call the police."
The security guard’s voice followed.
Nina Thorne raised an eyebrow in satisfaction.
’They were fast.’
Cole Kane roared, "Get away! Don’t touch me!"
"Nina Thorne, get the hell out here!"
Cole Kane shouted hysterically, his rage so intense it felt like it was seeping through the door, and Nina Thorne could feel it clearly.
’Heh.’
’Just last night, he was pretending to be so deeply in love.’
’So when a man wants to put on an act, he can make you believe you’re the happiest person in the world.’
’He’ll keep up the act until the day he doesn’t feel like it anymore.’
Nina Thorne stood up, walked to the door, and opened it.
Cole Kane was being flanked by two security guards, who were in the process of escorting him away.
Hearing the door open, Cole Kane whipped his head around.
"You finally decided to come out?"
Cole Kane strode back to stand before her, his eyes bloodshot.
A closer look revealed his eyeballs were webbed with red veins.
’Looks like last night was pretty intense for him.’
"Of course I had to come out. I wanted to see you twist the truth with my own eyes," Nina Thorne said, lifting her gaze to look at him coolly.
Her composure was a stark contrast to his furious expression.
Cole Kane gritted his teeth. "Are you saying you had nothing to do with what happened last night? How am I the one twisting the truth?! Nina Thorne, I never thought you could be so vicious!"
Nina Thorne found this laughable. "Weren’t you the one who wanted to do those things? I just gave you a taste of your own medicine and granted your wish. Why are you acting so wronged now?"
"Cole Kane, what right do you have to stand here barking like a mad dog?"
Cole Kane had no memory of what happened later that night.
It was Serena Kane who told him that Nina Thorne had drugged them both.
That was why things went wrong, why he... he had done something so outrageous with his own adoptive sister.
And it was all Nina Thorne’s fault!
"I just love you too much and wanted to get back together with you! What’s so wrong with that?"
Cole Kane’s face was flushed, veins bulging on his forehead. "Even if you didn’t want to, you shouldn’t have done something so heinous! How am I supposed to face Serena now?"
"Nina Thorne, you repay kindness with malice! You’re not even human!"
Seeing his self-righteous indignation, the mockery in Nina Thorne’s eyes deepened.
It would have been better if he’d kept his mouth shut.
But now that he said it, Nina could no longer hold back.
"Claiming to love me while doing things even an animal wouldn’t do? Cole Kane, is that how you love me?"
Nina Thorne clenched her jaw, her cool eyes turning sharp. "Well then, let me ask you—you impersonated my savior for ten years. How should I settle that score?!"
Cole Kane was utterly shocked, his pupils dilating.
’How does Nina Thorne know?’
Thinking it over, he seemed to understand.
’No wonder Nina Thorne had so readily agreed to go up the mountain with him last night.’
’He thought he was the one scheming against Nina Thorne.’
’But he never expected...’
’that he was the one who had walked into Nina Thorne’s trap.’
But he couldn’t remember what had happened last night at all, and since he was still counting on the Thorne Family’s power, he would never admit it so easily.
"What are you talking about? I don’t understand a thing!"
Cole Kane turned the tables on her. "If I didn’t save you, then who did? When it comes down to it, Nina Thorne, you just don’t want to repay the favor!"
Nina Thorne didn’t want to waste any more words on him. She took out her phone, tapped it, and played a recording.
Instantly, his conversation with Serena Kane from the previous night echoed through the hallway.
"Second Brother, I think Nina Thorne knows you’re not her savior. What do we do?"
"Impossible, she... she couldn’t have found out."
"It’s been ten years, and she never found out. There’s no way she knows I’m an impostor."
In the recording, although Cole Kane’s voice was slurred, he was clearly lucid and agitated.
Cole Kane’s face drained of color. He had absolutely no memory of this exchange.
"This recording doesn’t prove anything! You drugged me last night, I was barely conscious..."
SLAP!
Before he could finish, Nina Thorne slapped him across the face.
"For five years, you let me chase after you like a complete joke."
Nina Thorne glared at him furiously. "You impersonated him for ten years! Ten whole years!"
"Cole Kane, when it comes to who’s wrong, who do you think is really at fault?"
Cole Kane lifted his head, which had been knocked to the side. The pain was nothing to him.
His mind was a mess, and he hastily tried to explain, "Nina Thorne, I wasn’t in my right mind then. You can’t believe that."
Cole Kane tried to grab Nina Thorne’s hand, but she yanked it away, and he was left grasping at air.
"Don’t touch me."
Nina Thorne’s eyes were red as she bit out each word. "If you have any conscience left, you’ll tell me who saved me back then!"
At the mention of this, Nina Thorne’s chest heaved violently.
The undisguised rage on her face sent a chill down Cole Kane’s spine.
He could truly feel her disgust and disappointment in him.
Cole Kane didn’t dare admit it and tried to explain, "No, Nina Thorne, I didn’t impersonate him..."
"Enough!"
Nina Thorne had no hope that he would confess and didn’t want to talk to him anymore.
She looked at him with cold eyes and said heartlessly, "Get lost. I don’t want to see you again."
Nina Thorne turned to go back into her room.
A sudden panic seized Cole Kane’s heart. He reached out and grabbed her. "No, Nina Thorne, why are you doing this to me? Why won’t you believe me?"
Nina Thorne turned back, shook him off, and said icily, "Because you disgust me."
SLAM!
The door shut.
Cole Kane felt as if countless knives were stabbing him in the chest, the dense pain spreading through his entire body.
Never before had he felt such terror, as if he were about to lose something vital to his life.
The feeling terrified him, and he couldn’t stop himself from pounding on the door.
"Nina Thorne, open the door! Listen to my explanation!"
"We were in love for five years! Why are you doing this to me over something so small? Why?!"
"..."
Cole Kane continued to pound on the door, roaring in frustration.
The security guards couldn’t watch any longer. They immediately moved to restrain him and forcibly dragged him away.
Cole Kane’s shouts gradually faded into the distance until they disappeared completely.
The world was finally quiet.
Nina Thorne went back inside and sat on the sofa. She felt an unprecedented sense of relief and resolve, but she couldn’t help feeling annoyed as well.
’Impersonating my savior for ten years, and he just dismisses it as "something so small"?’
If she hadn’t mistakenly believed Cole Kane was her savior, why would she have ever even noticed him?
For ten whole years, she hadn’t been able to say a single thank you to her real savior.
How could he ever repay her for these ten wasted years?
No matter what, she had to find him.
-
That night, Justin Kane came back very late.
Nina Thorne had waited for him until she got sleepy and fell into a deep slumber.
When Justin Kane returned, he saw her sleeping soundly and didn’t want to disturb her. He simply hugged Nina, who had her back turned to him.
A moment later, his phone buzzed with a WeChat notification.
He picked it up and looked, his brows knitting together deeply.
A cold light glinted in his dark eyes.
The next day, Justin Kane drove Nina Thorne to the film set.
On the way, he suddenly asked in a warm voice, "Cole Kane came to harass you yesterday. Why didn’t you tell me?"
Nina Thorne looked at his face and smiled proudly. "Because I need to be able to handle my own problems. I can’t always rely on you."
Justin Kane knew she had handled it well the day before, and his gaze was full of admiration. "As expected of Mrs. Kane. You’re getting more and more formidable."
Nina Thorne thought about her savior and decided not to tell him about it. She didn’t want to bother him.
’Besides, men can be petty.’
’It definitely wouldn’t be good if he found out she was preoccupied with another man.’
’Forget it. I’ll just find him myself.’
When she arrived on set for filming, Jessica Jenkins avoided her completely.
She didn’t even dare to look her in the eye.
Nina Thorne knew she had a guilty conscience.
For five years, Nina Thorne had been a doormat. Enough was enough.
She wasn’t going to be betrayed so foolishly again. She cornered Jessica Jenkins in the break room on set.
"Is there something you want to say to me?"
Jessica Jenkins’s face instantly turned pale.
She hesitated for a few seconds. "Nina Thorne, what’s wrong? What do you want me to say?"
"The drugging."
Nina Thorne said crisply, "Who put you up to it?"
Jessica Jenkins was shocked. "You... you know everything?"
Nina Thorne nodded, her expression cool.
Jessica Jenkins pursed her lips in thought for a moment before saying apologetically, "I’m sorry, Nina Thorne. I was threatened. Serena Kane said that if I didn’t do it, she would release... those private videos of me..."
"Nina Thorne, please forgive me..."
Jessica Jenkins was full of remorse, apologizing to Nina Thorne over and over while tears streamed down her face.
Nina Thorne’s expression remained cold.
Suddenly, she splashed the water from her cup onto Jessica’s face.
Instantly, Jessica Jenkins’s face and hair were dripping with water.
"You’ve betrayed me twice now."
Nina Thorne turned and walked out, leaving a final, cool remark behind her. "From now on, don’t contact me again."
Nina Thorne returned to the shooting location. She wasn’t needed for any more scenes today, so she packed her things and prepared to leave.
A call came in from Albert Locke.
"Little girl, you’re really putting me to the test. It’s been too long, there really aren’t many clues to be found..."
Nina Thorne seemed to have expected this. She took a deep breath. "I know. It’s hard to investigate something from so many years ago."
"Not necessarily."
Albert Locke’s tone changed. "The good news is, the surveillance cameras back then still used disk storage technology. If we’re lucky, we can find them and see exactly what happened."
"Then it’ll be clear as day who saved you."
Hearing this, Nina Thorne froze, a sudden surge of excitement rising within her.
