Being Dumped by My EX, I Marriied His Older Brother-Chapter 14: The Father of Future Children
Seeing how seriously Justin Kane was asking, Nina Thorne felt it was necessary to match his sincerity.
"Regret it?" Nina Thorne’s expression was serious. "I never do things I regret."
"Besides, I’ve discovered that marrying you isn’t so bad. You just have to be good to me. I’ve been through too much to endure being wronged anymore."
A weight seemed to lift from Justin Kane’s chest, his heart finally settling.
His hands suddenly relaxed, and a visible softness appeared in his dark eyes.
He suppressed his emotions. "So, you’re satisfied with me?"
Nina Thorne looked down, lost in thought, and didn’t notice the change in his expression.
She looked up to meet his gaze. "You’re not bad. Whether as a husband, or a future... Anyway, as long as you don’t ask for a divorce, I won’t either."
In the past, she had simply been intimidated by the serious Justin Kane.
He had always seemed to dislike her.
Despite that, Nina Thorne didn’t hate him.
After spending time with him, she had actually grown to like his sense of responsibility and dependability.
Hearing this, a smile touched Justin Kane’s deep-set eyes.
"A future what? The father of my future children?" Justin Kane leaned in, his warm breath brushing against Nina Thorne’s cheek, making her blush crimson.
Nina Thorne’s breath caught in her throat.
Her cheeks were burning, so red it looked as if they could bleed. His proximity made the space feel constricting, and she quickly raised a hand to push against his chest.g
"Behave yourself. Stand up straight," Nina Thorne said, biting the inside of her lower lip.
She had a naturally fair complexion.
The blush on her fair skin was stunning, making her look like a delicate, blooming rose—so exquisite one couldn’t help but want to cherish her.
"Mm. I’ll work hard to be a good husband. And the father of our future children," Justin Kane said with a soft laugh, straightening up. His gaze was deep, as if making a solemn promise.
From his tone, Nina Thorne gathered that he seemed to be satisfied with her too.
She paused, her gaze calm and sincere. "Justin Kane, if you ever fall in love with someone, you have to tell me."
"I’ll step aside. Don’t make me look like a beggar."
’Humbly begging for a safe harbor.’
Justin Kane’s gaze darkened. "And you?"
"If one day you fall in love with someone, will you tell me? And divorce me?"
After asking, the anxiety he had just managed to quell rose up in his chest once more.g
Nina Thorne sensed a hint of disappointment from him but didn’t dwell on it.
’Their marriage was, after all, one of convenience.’
’Justin Kane didn’t want Mr. Kane to keep pressuring him to get married, and she was a candidate Mr. Kane approved of.’
’A man like Justin Kane, with a nonexistent and cold love life, had no time for romance. So he chose her.’
’It was simpler that way.’
"I won’t," Nina Thorne said, her lips curving into a smile. "I just told you, you’re a good fit."
Looking at her pure, innocent smile, the joy Justin Kane had felt moments ago vanished.
’She married him just because it was a "good fit."’
’Then again...’
’At seventeen, Nina Thorne had fallen head over heels for Cole Kane, a love that lasted five years.’g
’How could she just fall out of love on a whim?’
"Alright."
Justin Kane suppressed his emotions, his eyes dark and restrained. "I hope I get the chance to tell you who I’ve fallen in love with."
Nina Thorne’s heart felt heavy, a sliver of disappointment creeping in.
’Then again,’ she thought, ’we’re only getting married for the sake of getting married.’
...
「The day before the marriage registration.」
"Cole, have you really thought this through? You’re going to register your marriage with Nina Thorne?" Serena Kane asked, nervously clutching Cole Kane’s hand, her face a mask of self-reproach.
"Cole, if you haven’t decided about marrying Nina Thorne, I hope you won’t compromise just because of me."
Serena Kane looked like she was on the verge of tears, her wronged expression pitiable and endearing.
At every mention of Nina Thorne, Cole Kane’s expression grew sullen and impatient.
"This is the only way I can get Justin to let Zane Jarvis and the Jarvis Family off the hook."
Cole Kane pinched the bridge of his nose, clearly irritated. ’I didn’t think Nina Thorne’s tactics could get any more repulsive.’
’Now even Justin is on her side.’
’The Jarvis Family tried to come and apologize, but Justin refused to see them.’
’Considering the two families have always worked together, this was bound to damage their relationship.’
Serena Kane frowned. "Didn’t Justin used to hate Nina Thorne? Why is he suddenly helping her?"
Cole Kane replied, "He’s probably worried about jeopardizing the partnership between our families. After all, as the president of the corporation, he’ll always prioritize maximizing the interests of the Kane Family and the company."
Serena Kane figured that made sense.
She didn’t dwell on it. Knowing Cole Kane hated being threatened more than anything, she deliberately put on a tearful expression. "It’s all my fault. Master Jarvis only went after Nina Thorne because of me. If I had just put up with it, none of this would have happened."
"And you wouldn’t be forced to marry Nina Thorne."
Her words successfully fanned the flames of rage in Cole Kane’s chest, making him even more disgusted with Nina Thorne’s actions.
"Since she loves scheming so much, I’ll teach her a lesson after we’re married. I’ll make her change that cunning and spoiled little princess attitude of hers."
Serena Kane said thoughtfully, "Cole, I know you only agreed to marry Nina Thorne because of a promise from three years ago. You’re still so young, you could have your pick of any socialite. I really don’t want you to sacrifice yourself like this."
"If I’d known she would turn out like this, I never would have agreed to marry her," Cole Kane said ruthlessly, his eyes darkening. "If she’s still incorrigible after we’re married, I’ll divorce her immediately."
Hearing this, Serena Kane satisfyingly stopped the recording, a sinister glint in her eye.
Justin Kane had lunch with Nina Thorne before heading to the office.
The moment he was gone, Serena Kane swaggered into the hospital room.
"Nina Thorne..."
Serena Kane’s pretty face showed none of the meekness she displayed in front of Cole Kane. Her expression was purely provocative as she stared at Nina Thorne.
"You’re so shameless, threatening my dear Cole into marrying you."g
The attendant recognized her as a member of the Kane family and stood there uneasily, afraid something might happen.
Nina Thorne gestured for her to leave, reassuring her it was fine.
As soon as the attendant was gone, Nina Thorne retorted sharply, "Your dear Cole isn’t marrying you. Feeling a little salty, are we?"
"When it comes to being shameless, how could I possibly compare to you? If you’re so unhappy about it, why don’t you use the same trick you pulled three years ago and give him away to someone else?"
Serena Kane’s face changed drastically at those words. She snarled, "Stop spouting nonsense! Do you really think my Cole loves you?
If it weren’t for the partnership with the Thorne Family, he would never have been with you in the first place!"
Over the five years they were together, Nina Thorne had transformed from a bright, cheerful heiress into a pitiful creature, her features twisted by constant jealousy.
She was always afraid that Cole Kane didn’t love her, that he hated her, that she was a disappointment to him.
Because Cole Kane always called her willful and unreasonable.g
She had tried so hard to change, suppressing her confident, proud nature until she became quiet, reserved, and even docile.
Nina Thorne’s heart sank, but it felt like plunging into an ice cellar—the shock bringing with it a sudden, cold clarity.
A cold, sarcastic smile touched her red lips. "Whether he loves me or not, I’m not the one who’s worried. Why are you?"
"Oh, I get it. You’ve tried everything to seduce him and failed every time, so now you’re getting desperate?"g
"You!"
Serena Kane’s face turned livid with rage. She looked like she wanted to tear Nina Thorne to pieces.
Then, remembering something, Serena Kane gave a sinister smile. "Here, have a listen to this."g
She played the recording, and Cole Kane’s heartless voice filled the hospital room.
"If I’d known she would turn out like this, I never would have agreed to marry her."
"If she’s still incorrigible after we’re married, I’ll divorce her immediately."
"..."
Even though Nina Thorne had already given up on him, the words still stabbed her heart like sharp knives, causing a piercing pang of pain.
Serena Kane watched her expression with smug satisfaction and sneered, "Did you hear that? My dear Cole doesn’t love you at all..."
Nina Thorne’s eyes went cold. She snatched the glass from the bedside table and hurled it with all her might, striking Serena. Blood splattered as Serena let out a piercing scream.
