Being Dumped by My EX, I Marriied His Older Brother-Chapter 150: A Big Cry
Felicia Yates was startled. "Are you... threatening me? I’m your mother."
"Mother?"
Justin Kane’s thin lips twisted into a cold smirk. "Everything you’ve done hardly seems to take into account that I’m your son."
"Do I need to remind you what you all did behind my back to stop me from announcing my marriage to Nina Thorne?"
His voice was low, laced with suppressed fury.
But even so, he radiated a fearsome anger.
Felicia Yates was so shocked her face turned deathly pale, and her body swayed.
’So, he knew all along.’
’That makes sense. Last time in Keldon, he successfully thwarted her plan.’
At this thought, Felicia Yates dropped the pretense and let out a few cold laughs. "You can’t blame anyone else. If you have to blame someone, blame April Graham."
"She won’t let you and Nina Thorne have a peaceful life. Unless..."
Felicia Yates slammed her hands on the desk, looking at him with a vicious grin. "...you want Nina Thorne dead."
"Don’t worry, nothing will happen to her."
Justin Kane’s expression was grim. "You should be more worried about your precious son."
Felicia Yates’s eyes turned red with anger. Realizing she couldn’t get through to him, she left in a huff.
Frustrated, Justin Kane loosened his tie.
He called Assistant Cheney in. "Take the materials to the police station. Don’t let them get out."
Assistant Cheney’s eyes widened in surprise, utterly astonished.
Seeing him just standing there, unmoving...
Justin Kane shot him a cold glance. "Do you not want this job anymore?"
"No, no, no! I’ll go right away."
Assistant Cheney hurried out, thinking, ’The Madam came over in a rage just now. It must have been about the Second Young Master.’
’The CEO isn’t showing any mercy at all?’
Nina Thorne slept for less than four hours. She got up a little after four in the afternoon and went to the hospital with Macy Lynch.
Mr. Dawson was watching over Master Thorne.
When he saw her arrive, his face was filled with sorrow. "Miss Thorne, you’re here. The Master still hasn’t woken up."
Mr. Dawson had been with Master Thorne for decades, and the two shared a deep bond.
With something wrong with the Master, Mr. Dawson was naturally distraught.
"Grandpa will definitely wake up. Don’t worry, Mr. Dawson," Nina Thorne said comfortingly, trying to reassure herself as well.
Mr. Dawson looked at her haggard face, sighed, and stepped out of the hospital room.
Seeing the usually kind Master Thorne now lying in a hospital bed, with no telling when he might wake, made Macy Lynch’s heart ache.
Master Thorne had always treated her like his own granddaughter.
He doted on Nina Thorne, and by extension, he doted on her best friend as well.
He was a very kind and loving old man, and Macy had always respected him deeply.
In the entire Thorne Family, he was all Nina had left.
If something were to happen to Master Thorne, she didn’t dare to imagine what would become of Nina.
"Sweetie, Mr. Thorne will definitely be okay and wake up. Don’t worry too much, you hear?"
Macy Lynch hugged Nina Thorne tightly, her heart aching for her. "Stay with me for a while. I’m actually taking some time off, so I can be there for you."
Nina Thorne looked at her, confused. "Time off?"
"Yeah. I’ve been working around the clock for almost two years without a proper break. I need to take a vacation and have some fun. Isn’t it perfect timing to keep you company?"
Nina Thorne felt grateful to have her, and a relieved smile touched her eyes. "Of course it’s perfect. But I still need to find a place to live."
She had considered moving back to the old family home, but it was too far from the city.
The apartment she used to live in had already been sold.
’It would be more convenient to just buy a house,’ she thought.
Macy Lynch released her hug and frowned. "Are you turning your nose up at me? You don’t want to live with me?"
Nina Thorne couldn’t help but laugh. "Yep, you guessed it."
"Oh, so that’s how it is, Nina Thorne! You’re not even pretending anymore."
Macy ran to the hospital bed to complain to Master Thorne. "Mr. Thorne, you have to wake up and stand up for me! Nina Thorne is bullying me."
"It’s been so long since I’ve had a meal with you, Mr. Thorne. When you wake up, I’ll come have morning tea with you all the time, okay?"
"..."
Watching this scene, Nina felt a sliver of comfort in her heavy heart.
She still had her grandfather, and she still had Macy.
’Some people are just meant to be passing travelers.’
A person’s life is like a train journey. It stops and starts along the way. Some people get on, and some people get off.
The two of them didn’t head back until after dark.
Back home, Macy Lynch ordered takeout. Not long after they both showered, the food arrived.
Nina Thorne wore a large, soft, and comfortable t-shirt, her hair clipped up. She looked casual and fresh.
The scent of her body wash after her shower made her smell clean and sweet.
Macy sat beside her, leaning her head on her shoulder and hugging her waist. "Sweetie, having you here with me makes me so happy."
Macy’s breath tickled her neck, and Nina laughed, pushing her head away.
"Alright, drama queen. The food’s getting cold."
Seeing her act mercilessly exposed, Macy Lynch opened the takeout containers one by one.
She had ordered a lot of food.
Stir-fries, grilled fish, braised duck parts, and a sweet dessert soup.
These were all their favorite things to eat back in their student days.
Nina hadn’t originally liked this kind of food, but after spending so much time with Macy, she had gradually grown to enjoy it.
They ate and chatted.
Macy suddenly said with great solemnity, "I hope I can be with you for the rest of our lives. Long live our friendship."
Nina was touched and nodded. "Yes. Long live our friendship."
With Macy, she didn’t have to worry about being betrayed.
Even better, she didn’t have to fake her emotions. She could cry if she wanted to cry and laugh if she wanted to laugh.
Macy’s eyes darted around. "Something seems to be missing."
Nina raised an eyebrow. "Alcohol?"
Macy clapped her hands together. "Exactly! As expected, you’re the one who knows me best."
She got up from the floor, ran to the kitchen, opened the fridge, and took out a few bottles of white beer.
"Let’s have these. The alcohol content is low."
"Okay."
Nina Thorne didn’t refuse.
Her heart felt like a tangled mess.
It was constricted, numb, and aching all at once.
’A little alcohol should make it easier to sleep.’
As they drank, the emotions she had been desperately suppressing were released one by one.
Nina Thorne let the tears stream silently down her face.
The light glinted off her crystalline tears and the reddened corners of her eyes, making her look unspeakably fragile and broken.
Macy put an arm around her shoulder, her voice choked with heartache. "If you want to cry, just cry. You’ll feel better if you let it out."
Nina’s throat tightened as she tried to hold it back.
But once an emotion breaks through, it’s like a bursting dam—unstoppable.
She cried even harder, asking through painful sobs, "Did I do something wrong? Why does everyone treat me like this?"
"Cole Kane was like this, and now he’s like this too..."
"And I... I... even dragged Grandpa into this. Now he’s lying in a hospital bed, and I don’t know when he’ll wake up."
"Macy... I’m so scared... It hurts so much..."
Nina cried out her questions, tears ravaging her fair face. Her weeping was so desperate and sorrowful it was enough to break anyone’s heart.
Macy couldn’t hold back anymore. She put down her drink, hugged her tightly, and stroked her head, comforting her over and over.
She was crying too. "Don’t you dare think like that. They hurt you because they’re bastards."
"Whether it’s Cole Kane or Justin Kane, it’s just them not knowing how to cherish you."
"Nina Thorne, you have me, and you have your grandpa. We will always be by your side."
"Don’t devalue yourself because of some shameless bastards. You are Nina Thorne, the righteous and brave Nina Thorne."
"But Macy, it hurts so much... I feel like I’m going to die..."
Nina cried with painful restraint, her hoarse voice asking, "I didn’t do anything wrong, so why are they all treating me like this? Why?"
Her heart felt like it was being ripped in two.
The numbness faded, and pain gnawed at every fiber of her being like a wild beast.
Macy’s heart ached with fear, afraid Nina wouldn’t be able to hold on.
"They’re the blind ones. It’s not your fault..."
Macy tried her best to console her. "Have you forgotten how we met? Other people looked down on my family for being poor, they bullied me, and they even hired thugs to ruin me."
"It was you. You were so thin, but you helped me without a second thought. And you helped other classmates who were being bullied, too..."
"Nina Thorne, in my heart, you’re like a star. You’re a truly good person, a really good person..."
Tears streamed down Macy’s face. Thinking of all the grievances Nina had suffered, her heart ached terribly.
Nina hugged her and cried for a long, long time, until the alcohol took effect and, exhausted from crying, she collapsed against her and fell into a deep sleep.
That night, Macy couldn’t sleep.
She sat on the balcony and smoked all night.
But she wasn’t the only one who was sleepless.
Justin Kane was agitated and called Seth Lawson and the others to go out for a drink.
Seth Lawson refused. "If you’re not going to explain things properly to Nina Thorne, don’t call me for drinks anymore."
"...How do I explain?"
It was the first time Justin Kane’s tone had sounded so helpless.
Seth knew it was difficult for him. After finding out what happened at the hospital last time, he could understand Justin’s position, but he was still annoyed.
"You just underestimate her resilience too much. Maybe she’s grown up. Maybe she wouldn’t break like you think she would."
"Fine. Come or don’t, I don’t care."
Annoyed, Justin Kane hung up, not wanting to waste any more words on him.
But he really didn’t want to be alone.
Especially when he recalled how resolute Nina had looked when she brought up divorce. His chest felt like it was filled with a ball of fire.
One that could burn him to ashes at any moment.
He called Shawn Sinclair next. "Want to come out for a drink?"
Shawn Sinclair’s voice was drowsy, clearly having been woken up. "Master Kane, First Young Master Kane, I have a surgery to perform tomorrow morning."
"..."
’Great.’
No one would join him.
He tossed his phone onto the table and got up to search the fridge.
Then he gave up on the idea of drinking.
He picked up his phone again, opened his chat with Nina Thorne, then went to her social media Moments...
The post she’d made a few days ago was right there.
It was a nine-photo grid, and the one in the center was their marriage certificate.
Justin Kane lowered his gaze, his eyelashes trembling.
After a moment of silence, he turned off his screen and went upstairs.
After venting her feelings with alcohol, Nina Thorne slept very deeply.
Until she was woken up by a phone call.
It was her grandfather’s assistant, Jay Jacobs. "Miss Thorne, the Second Young Master of the second branch suddenly showed up at the group headquarters with his people. He’s trying to take over the Chairman’s position."
Nina Thorne shot up in bed, all traces of sleep gone.
"Did all the shareholders go?"
"They’ve all come. It looks like many of them have been bought off behind the scenes. Miss Thorne, the group is the Chairman’s life’s work. They’re trying to steal it now because they know the Chairman is in the hospital..."
Nina knew that, of course, but she hadn’t expected them to be so blatant about it.
"Stall them. I’m on my way."
Without another word, Nina Thorne threw off the covers, got out of bed, washed up, and rushed to the company.
After so many years, she was stepping into the company again, but this time, she had no intention of backing down.
’They all say I’m a useless heiress who only knows how to write worthless scripts. Fine. I’ll show them what useful really means!’
