Chapter 70: Chapter 70: Affair, Video

Nina Thorne met Serena Kane’s gaze and gave a faint, cool smile.

’She really hates me.’

"Don’t be afraid. I’ll be with you the whole night." Justin Kane misunderstood, thinking she was worried about something, and whispered reassuringly in her ear.

"I’m not afraid."

Nina Thorne turned her head to look at him, her smile confident and poised. "With you here, I’m not afraid."

In the past, her support had been the Thorne Family and her grandfather.

To keep her grandfather from worrying, she had always reported the good news and hidden the bad.

Now she had Justin Kane, and they were husband and wife.

A husband and wife are one entity, even if they aren’t in love.

So he had to have her back.

A smile surfaced in Justin Kane’s dark eyes. "Mm, that’s progress. You should keep thinking that way from now on."

"Okay, you said it."

Nina Thorne’s clear eyes sparkled, and her smile was lovely and radiant. "No regrets."

’At least, not until he gets together with the one he loves.’

’He has to have my back.’

"Alright." Justin Kane’s lips curved up slightly as he readily agreed.

Watching their sweet, intimate interaction as if no one else existed, a fiery rage surged in Cole Kane’s chest.

Serena Kane deliberately fanned the flames. "Cole, you see? What Nina Thorne said to you last time was just to cover up the fact that she’s hooking up with our older brother."

"I mean, how could I ever do something so incestuous to you? Don’t let her deceive you."

She was seething inwardly.

A few days ago at the villa, Cole Kane had confronted her about drugging him.

She had vehemently denied it.

But Cole Kane, who had always trusted her without question, had actually hesitated this time, seemingly growing suspicious of her.

Cole Kane clenched his fists, his knuckles cracking. He gritted his teeth and said, "No, Nina Thorne isn’t that kind of person. She’s always loved me deeply. She would never do anything to betray me."

Though he said the words, his chest felt hollow.

Although he and Nina Thorne were only standing a few meters apart, it felt as if they were separated by an uncrossable galaxy.

For the first time, his heart ached so much, so constricted that he felt like he was going to lose his mind!

Felicia Yates frowned. "People’s hearts are fickle. Don’t be so sure of yourself, and more importantly, don’t trust her so much."

Cole Kane’s face was grim, his eyes barely concealing a furious rage.

Seeing his expression, Serena Kane’s lips curved into a smug smile, a sinister glint flashing in her eyes.

In a little while, she would make Cole Kane see for himself.

Exactly what Nina Thorne had been doing behind his back!

...

Justin Kane led Nina Thorne to a side hall to see Mrs. Lawson and present their gift.

"Madam Lawson, I hope you like this painting." Nina Thorne’s eyes curved with her sweet smile, her pale pink gown accentuating her gentle and captivating demeanor.

Mrs. Lawson sat in the seat of honor, dressed in a dark, patterned cheongsam. Despite her graying hair, she exuded an air of dignity and nobility.

She studied Nina Thorne for a moment before recognition dawned, and she smiled in satisfaction. "So it’s Lady Thorne. Very good. This gift is very thoughtful. This old woman likes it very much."

Nina Thorne’s eyes curved into crescents as she smiled. "I’m relieved that you like it, Madam Lawson."

Mrs. Lawson smiled kindly. "How is it that you’ve come with the Kane family’s eldest son today? As I recall, in previous years you were always stuck to Second Young Master Kane."

"Oh, right, your wedding should be soon, shouldn’t it?"

"Before, you, little lady, declared you were going to marry Second Young Master Kane. Everyone in our circle knows..."

"If I remember correctly, you two got engaged later, right?"

Nina Thorne was mortified.

She had always been bold, shamelessly proclaiming back then that she would marry Cole Kane.

Everyone in high society knew about it.

She had been ridiculed endlessly behind her back.

Nina Thorne cleared her throat. "Madam Lawson, you have a great memory. I was young and naive back then, and the things I said must have troubled Second Young Master Kane."

Madam Lawson was slightly taken aback. "You mean you’re not getting married?"

"Of course not."

Before Nina Thorne could speak, Justin Kane answered for her.

The gesture was undoubtedly meant to protect Nina Thorne.

Tonight’s banquet was crowded and lively.

All the prominent families from their circle who were supposed to be there, were there.

Madam Lawson’s brow furrowed slightly. "You young man, you were abroad for quite a few years. I heard from Seth that you’ve only been back for two months, right?"

"So, you know about these things already?"

She was about the only one who dared to speak to Justin Kane like that.

As the wealthiest family in Sylport, the Kane Family’s background was immense.

Justin Kane was exceptionally capable and incredibly well-connected; it was no exaggeration to say he held the economic lifeline of Sylport in his hands.

Justin Kane’s lips quirked. "Coincidentally, I know everything I’m supposed to know."

Mrs. Lawson’s frown deepened, and she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. "You young man, you’re still the same as ever. Like a little old man, wise beyond your years."

Seeing his posture, she joked, "Don’t tell me you and Lady Thorne are the real couple?"

Nina Thorne froze.

’Her intuition is sharp. She’s right.’

Justin Kane’s dark eyes were unreadable as he suddenly asked in return, "Do you think we’re a good match, Madam Lawson?"

Mrs. Lawson actually began to seriously study their faces.

Before she could say anything, Serena Kane glided over, presenting a gift. "Madam Lawson..." Her voice was soft and sickly sweet. "Serena wishes you blessings as boundless as the eastern sea and a life as long as the southern mountains."

Mrs. Lawson chuckled and nodded. "Good, good. What a well-behaved child."

She stared at Serena Kane’s face, but didn’t seem to recognize her.

Not until Felicia Yates and Cole Kane came forward.

"Mrs. Lawson, you’ve forgotten. This is Serena," Felicia Yates said, introducing Serena Kane as she presented her own birthday gift.

Mrs. Lawson’s eyes lit up with realization. "Oh, so it’s Sophia’s girl! She’s grown up so well. The two of you, mother and daughter, look like you were cast from the same mold."

"Come, child, let Grandma have a look at you."

"Okay, Grandma."

Serena Kane moved closer.

Tonight, she was dressed head-to-toe in designer brands, done up like a princess. Her small face was delicately made up, and her figure was slim and frail, inspiring a great deal of affection from Mrs. Lawson, who instantly left Nina Thorne forgotten at the side.

"I heard you also went abroad three years ago and only recently returned? Oh my, why are you so thin? You must have suffered while you were overseas," Mrs. Lawson said, her heart aching for Serena Kane.

Serena Kane shook her head obediently. "It’s alright if Serena suffers a little. If Nina Thorne and my brother Cole can get back together, I don’t mind continuing to stay abroad."

As soon as she said this, the atmosphere in the room shifted.

Her words implied that she had gone abroad for three years for the sake of Nina Thorne and Cole Kane.

There were already many guests, and they all showed looks of astonishment.

’Could it be? Is there gossip?’

Nina Thorne’s expression remained serene.

’Heh, so it begins.’

She glanced discreetly at Justin Kane and saw that his handsome face was completely cold and indifferent, utterly unmoved.

He seemed to have everything under control, as if all was going according to his plan.

...

Mrs. Lawson, not understanding, glanced at Nina Thorne, then at Cole Kane. "What does this mean? I’m afraid I don’t follow."

She asked Cole Kane, "Did you two have a fight? No wonder Lady Thorne denied your relationship just now. So you were fighting."

"It’s fine for young people to quarrel, but you can’t drag innocent people into it."

Her words were clearly meant to stand up for Serena Kane.

She singled out Cole Kane. "Second Young Master Kane, you tell me. What’s going on with you and Lady Thorne?"

Cole Kane looked in Nina Thorne’s direction, his gaze suddenly darkening.

He saw Nina Thorne standing with Justin Kane, their relationship clearly intimate, and he was so furious he nearly lost his mind.

It was bad enough that Nina Thorne was repeatedly getting close to his older brother just to spite him, but to attend a banquet together tonight...

This was tantamount to a public slap in the face!

"Madam Lawson, we did have a fight,"

Cole Kane said with a placating smile, feigning a good temper. "But it’s normal for girls to throw little tantrums. Nina Thorne has a good personality; she won’t stay angry at me for long."

"So are you still getting married or not?" Mrs. Lawson shot a glance at Nina Thorne, a flicker of displeasure rising in her heart.

’This girl, why is her temper so bad?’

’It’s possible Serena went abroad back then because of her.’

Nina Thorne stood with her back straight, her clear voice resolute. "We’re not."

The crowd was in an uproar.

Someone suddenly asked, "Weren’t you about to get married? Why call it off all of a sudden?"

"The Thorne Family’s daughter is so willful. I remember you’re the one who said you wouldn’t marry anyone but Cole Kane."

...

Nina Thorne’s heart twinged.

’In the past, I was a bit foolish.’

’But not anymore.’

"It was just youthful ignorance."

Nina Thorne’s lips curled slightly, her expression cool and detached. "Who can claim they’ve never done anything foolish?"

Everyone was taken aback.

Cole Kane’s face was ashen, his eyes filled with gloom.

"Nina Thorne, even if you’re throwing a tantrum, you should know when to stop."

Serena Kane accused, "Ever since our older brother came back, you’ve been clinging to his side and starting to find fault with Cole. What you’re doing is just too much."

"Anyone who didn’t know better would think you and our older brother were the real couple."

Felicia Yates said sternly, "Serena, don’t talk nonsense."

"Mom, am I wrong?" Serena Kane doubled down, wishing she could destroy Nina Thorne on the spot. "Before, for Nina’s sake, our older brother hit Cole again and again, and even stripped him of his position as president of the branch company."

Felicia Yates had originally intended to follow her husband’s wishes and announce the broken engagement tonight.

But thinking of the grievances Cole Kane had suffered, she was inexplicably compelled not to stop Serena Kane from continuing.

In truth, she also felt that Justin Kane’s attitude toward Nina Thorne was far too strange.

In any case, it wouldn’t be a bad thing to let Nina Thorne be taught a lesson tonight.

"Something like that really happened?"

Mrs. Lawson was shocked and incredulous. "Justin Kane, is what Serena said true?"

"It’s pure slander." Justin Kane lifted his cold gaze, staring at Serena Kane as if she were a stranger.

"Do you know the penalty for libel and slander?"

Serena Kane’s heart leaped in fear at his words.

Especially since Justin Kane’s eyes were devoid of warmth; he looked at her with more indifference than he would a beggar on the street.

In an instant, fury ignited in Serena Kane, and she snorted coldly. "I’m not slandering you. Paparazzi took photos of you acting intimately and even living together. It’s a good thing I managed to buy the photos in time."

’The show is starting.’

Nina Thorne gave a provocative smile. "Serena Kane, why exactly are you publicly slandering me in front of all these people?"

"Are you afraid I’ll marry Cole Kane? You’re so scared... don’t tell me you’re in love with him?"

The crowd erupted again.

Felicia Yates snapped, "Nina Thorne, even if you and Cole Kane have broken off your engagement, you should still watch your mouth."

"Serena Kane knows best whether it’s nonsense or not." Nina Thorne’s lips curled into a cold, sarcastic, and provocative smile.

Looking at her smile, Cole Kane suddenly felt a surge of unease in his heart.

"Nina Thorne, stop trying to sling mud at me! You’re clearly the one who deliberately seduced our older brother and then forced Cole to break the engagement. I was originally going to give you a chance on this,

but since you don’t want it, I have no choice but to seek justice for my brother!"

Serena Kane turned to the crowd and announced loudly, "Everyone, I happen to have photos of them being intimate. Once you see them, you’ll know I’m not slandering them!"

After speaking, Serena Kane shot Nina Thorne a triumphant smile, took a small remote control from her purse, and pressed a button.

Instantly, a video appeared on the projector screen.
