Chapter 9: Chapter 9: I am not blushing

Zoey came upstairs, watching her single. "Hey, Eve, what happened? Are you still here? Where's Nate?"

Luna, holding a laptop, added, "He's right there. Why don't you ask him yourself, instead of just sitting here watching him?"

Evangeline took a deep breath, looking up. "I've waited for him for, like, two hours and now he shows up. What am I supposed to do?"

Zoey's voice laced with teasing, asked, "Oh I see... I thought you were scared of asking him."

"Who..., me? Are you scared of him? Uh... What do you think of me?" Evangeline retorted and flipped her hair back.

Luna mocked, mimicking Evangeline's earlier expression. "We've all seen that look when you read his name." She laughed.

Evangeline bit her lip, a flicker of doubt crossing her face. "I'm not scared," she insisted, though her voice wavered slightly. "It's just... two hours is a long time to wait. He'll pay for this," she muttered, a forced smile tugging at her lips.

"We are eagerly waiting for it, is that right Zoey" Luna replied.

Zoey nodded her head, "Yeah, ... go and approach him. Okay, go ahead, now! He's packing his bag. Go!"

Eve took a deep breath, trying to calm the frantic beating of her heart, and wondered why I said he was just a man. Even I can't tell them the truth. "Okay, let's watch me," she said, a flicker of determination finally overcoming her nervousness as Eve stood at her desk, she grabbed her bag and walked towards the door. Her heart pounded as she watched Nate exit the classroom. Sensing her uncertainty, Joe poked her gently.

The final bell rang, signifying the end of university. She said her goodbyes by waving her hands to Joe and Lilly.

Outside the hallway cold air flowed everywhere, Evangeline Watched both directions of the hallway which side he was going, and followed Nate as he exited the north side lecture hall, her heart pounding in her chest.

"Nate, wait!" she called from a few meters behind him, but he walked swiftly, pretending not to hear her. She shouted after him, her voice echoing down the hallway. "Nate!"

No response

Nate walked straight ahead; his expression unchanging. The murmur of voices followed him down the hallway, heads turning, eyes lingering. He gave no indication he noticed, his gaze fixed on some distant point as if he were alone in the crowded corridor. His shoulders remained relaxed, his pace even, a subtle air of detachment radiating from him.

"Nate, wait!" She shouted again, but he continued, still acting as if he couldn't hear her.

Everyone in the hallway paused to watch her when she shouted his name loudly.

After realizing everyone's eyes were on both, he finally paused, rolled his eyes upwards as annoying, and turned to face her; his countenance unreadable. "What?" His voice was deep and gentle.

He took a couple of steps closer, making her feel small. Evangeline's attention briefly shifted from his muscular chest to his belt before darting away. "OMG, his body, fragrance, it's annoying. "Focus, Eve. Focus.... What will he think..." she thought, flustered.

Nate leaned closer, his breath warm against her ear. A mischievous glint sparkled in his eyes. "Enjoying the view?" he murmured.

A nervous flutter erupted in Evangeline's stomach, she stepped back, her words tripping over one another, and she couldn't even look him in the eyes directly now. "Yes...., I mean..." She shook her head. "No... I am your partner."

"Wait....What?" Nate lifted an eyebrow, visibly surprised.

Under her breath, Evangeline mumbled, she swallowed her saliva, What the fuck happened to me, she thought, and finally, "God... I mean, I'm your business communication partner."

She was bemused for a while before responding with a casual shrug.

Nate studied her, his gaze cool and unreadable. A smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. "Okay, so what?"

A mixture of frustration and annoyance twisted inside her. She exhaled sharply, her patience wearing thin. " We need to collaborate on the project. Are you available this weekend?"

Nate could have shrugged and could have played this game longer, but he was already having too much fun watching her irritation grow. "Calm down. I'll do the whole project myself. You can just sit back and enjoy your grade." His deep voice carried an effortless confidence, making it clear he wasn't interested in teamwork.

Zoey and Luna Walked near to Eve; Zoey coughed to signal her.

Evangeline understood she was standing behind her, Shit! I don't know how to handle this situation, my friends are already here, Eve be confident.... she thought. She raises a confident voice, and her tone becomes loud and sly too, "Dude, I can't stay in your apartment, how can I trust a stranger like you"

Nate smirked at her sudden change, he stepped closer, playful smirk remained, "You have no choice, Baby"

Evangeline words slurred, echoing her heartbeat in her ears "Excuse me..., I am not baby?"

Nate chuckled, walked near her, looking down her face "What about, wifey" he said.

"Luna's jaw dropped. She exchanged a wide-eyed look with Zoey, who stifled a laugh behind her hand. They exchanged a silent agreement and discreetly slipped away, leaving Evangeline to face Nate alone."

Evangeline angrily, glancing around, nearby students watching them while walking" Hey... Have you last your mind"

Nate leaned closer, his voice dropping to a low murmur. A glint of amusement sparkled in his eyes. "Okay, okay," he chuckled. "Just kidding. You know," he added, a glint in his eyes, "I like it when you're angry. It suits you...."

While they were talking, Nate's phone buzzed continuously before he could answer. He nodded slightly to Evangeline and cast a glance at the screen, leaving her wondering what he was trying to say. "We can talk later, Evangeline," he said.

Upon hearing him say "later" and watching him walk away, frustration began to build in her chest. "Ssi-bal," she muttered purposefully, hoping he would hear her. What a waste of time! Why him out of all the others?

Nate heard her mutter "Ssi-bal." He paused, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. So, she's not as indifferent as she pretends. He took another step, then another, his back to her. He wouldn't give her the satisfaction of knowing he'd heard. Let her stew.

Aaron stood against a locker, quietly observing the scene. His sharp eyes tracked Evangeline's every movement, a relaxed smile on his face. He noticed her cheeks flush and her shoulders tighten as Nate leaned in. When Nate eventually left her alone, Aaron's smile faded. He saw the frustration in her tight jaw and the way her hand clenched into a fist at her side.

When she turned and spotted him, she forced a small grin and walked toward him.

Evangeline waved to Aaron from a distance. "Hey, wait," but her mind was swirling with questions. Does he judge me? Should I explain? Or he will ask me? a lot of confusion but forced a smile to mask her unease, she brushed her doubts aside.

"You mentioned you have practice today," she asked, holding his hand tightly.

Aaron watched down her face. "I have, but I wanted to check on you. After last night, I assumed you were still terrified, so here I am."

Her stiff shoulders relaxed slightly. She hadn't realized how much she needed to hear some comforting words

"Right now, I just feel drained." She sighed before looking up at him with hopeful eyes. "Can we go to a coffee bar?"

Aaron smirked; his amusement was evident. "If my queen orders it, how can I refuse?" he teased.

Evangeline let out an exaggerated sigh, waving her hand dismissively. "I'm no queen—more like a prisoner," she ribbed her tone dramatic.

His smirk faded slightly, his tone turning serious. "A prisoner? Why do you say that?"

She hesitated before sighing. "I can't even go outside alone. What does that tell you? It's like I'm under house arrest."

Aaron gently holds her palm. "You have all the freedom. He just cares about you too much. Don't worry about Uncle, okay? For now, let's enjoy the coffee."

She shook her head up and down, "You are the best," and she wrapped her arms around him in a quick hug.
