Chapter 37: A mother’s wishes (1)
’When will he get rid of them?’ Cassandra wondered.
The sight of vampires in the home still bothered her. She would always feel out of place with so many around. If Gabriel wanted to make her feel comfortable then he needed to hire more humans and get rid of the servants who were sulking over Selene’s departure.
"They came here for work. Why are they so worked up about her no longer being here? They will wake up in due time," Cassandra said, not the least bit concerned about the servants.
When their jobs were at stake they would forget about Selene.
Cassandra dragged herself out of bed. Another night passed with Gabriel taking his frustration out on her during their intimacy. He was rough which made it hard to enjoy at times but she knew he would soon calm down once they were married.
Cassandra made her way downstairs to see that the servants were doing their jobs right. She was still trying to pick up where Selene left off with the affairs of the house and so far, she was doing a good job at it.
Cassandra liked hearing the three maids she picked to serve her walking so close by. They would do anything she said since she was the new lady of the house. "Where is Gabriel?"
"He has gone to train, Milady," A maid named Mandy answered. "He should return within the next hour. If you need, I can send someone for him."
"Leave him be. I enjoy the peace. This gives me time to look around the home once more to see what I like and dislike. Like this," Cassandra touched a curtain. "She picked this, didn’t she? Get rid of it and everything else she prepared. We don’t have any use for what she liked anymore."
Cassandra wished they could give Selene these useless things but they should fetch for a good price. Still, Cassandra would like for it to appear like Selene needed the charity. That would fuel the rumours that Selene had been outsmarted by a human.
Something about Selene annoyed Cassandra.
"Gabriel!" Cassandra heard the echo of Lucinda’s voice.
Again, Lucinda came when she was not needed.
Cassandra made her way to the door to greet Lucinda. With how Lucinda acted at times, one would think she was the one who went out to war. Lucinda tried to force her way to have her name attached to Gabriel’s praises. Speaking as if she was the one who taught him how to use a sword.
Cassandra smiled when she found Lucinda.
"Oh! There you are. I was starting to think neither of you was home and failed to inform you that you would not be present. You have not started the wedding plans without me, have you?" Lucinda asked, drawing close to Cassandra to hug her.
"I have not. Gabriel and I have been enjoying each other’s company for now," Cassandra replied.
"Which means you have been getting well acquainted with each other in bed. A child must come soon but other things are important now. You and Gabriel have skipped a few steps but luckily, I am here to help you. Isn’t that lovely of me?" Lucinda asked, tapping Cassandra’s hand.
"It is," Cassandra answered. "Before I planned the wedding, I was looking around at what needed to be changed. I will put away all the things picked out by Selene and replace them with what I like."
"If it is new, pass it to me. I will find someone who will make good use of it. If it looks cheap, just toss it away," said Lucinda.
Lucinda knew there might be something here worth money which Selene was foolish to leave behind. There wasn’t a point in getting rid of it when money could be made. "I see you took my advice to be more mindful of how you dress. When I have time, I will take you to where I like to get my dresses. You must always be perfect since Gabriel will enter the palace."
"Oh," Lucinda clapped her hands, interrupting Cassandra’s chance to speak. "I have come with wonderful news which should take the pressure away from you. I have found my wedding dress. I remember how beautiful I looked wearing it and thought to give it to you."
Cassandra’s smile slowly went away. "Your wedding dress? The one you wore many years ago?"
Cassandra didn’t have any doubt the dress wasn’t beautiful and certainly smelled by now. Who would want an old wedding dress?
"It sounds dear to you so I will let you keep it and I will find something-"
"Nonsense," Lucinda interjected. "I am willing to give it to you. It will need a good wash and some fixing but it will turn out good."
’Does she want to bring attention to the dress once belonging to her on my wedding day? How much more insufferable could she get?’ Cassandra thought.
Cassandra wasn’t going to be caught in Lucinda’s old wedding dress which needed to be burned. If she could get her hands on it, she would hide it where it couldn’t be found again. The dress didn’t concern Cassandra since she would find her way to get out of wearing it.
"I would like to start the wedding plans but I find myself troubled by something. There are still plenty of servants who are loyal to Selene. I am afraid that they might be lurking around each corner listening to what I have to say. I feel out of place here as the only human," Cassandra said, her head bowed and shoulders slumped to help portray her pitiful position.
"I understand what you feel. I have asked that there be more humans around so I could feel comfortable when visiting. That witch ensured there were all vampires here. She is nothing like my husband who considered how I would feel. You must mention it to Gabriel," Lucinda advised Cassandra.
"I would like to but I don’t want to upset him. I do not want it to appear as if I am trying to change everything so quickly. He still thinks about Selene. I know it. What am I to do?" Cassandra asked. She raised her head so Lucinda could see she was on the brink of tears.
Lucinda wiped Cassandra’s face with her handkerchief. "Do nothing for now. Things must change to get rid of Selene’s presence here. I believed he had moved on but he was fooling me. I should have known he would not forget so easily. I will speak to him and I will personally take down what she placed here. Focus on the wedding."
Lucinda could not have Cassandra breaking down at a time like this. She could handle her son while Cassandra focused on becoming a lady who perfectly matched Gabriel.
"I would like something to drink. Something to warm me up since the weather is a bit chilly. I thought there was a storm passing over the town last night. Be a dear and get me something to drink Cassandra. I’ll take a seat in a drawing home," Lucinda said and then left Cassandra’s side.
Cassandra bit her tongue to refrain from saying what was on her mind. Many servants were around yet Lucinda wanted her to get the drink. "Prepare a drink and bring it to me," she ordered her maid.
