Chapter 41: Rumours of a wedding (1)

"The queen enters!"

Queen Vivienne Beaumont entered the room her husband stuck himself in all day in the arms of a woman. "Get out!"Vivienne ordered the servant girl.

The maid looked to Darius for his order.

Darius stared at Vivienne and knew her anger would push her to get rid of another woman he enjoyed his time with. "Didn’t you hear the queen? Leave us."

The maid pouted but still gathered her things to leave. She wasn’t yet spoiled with the things he promised her.

Darius sipped the last of the wine the maid poured for him. It was how she trapped him here. First bringing him wine and then seducing him.

Vivienne paid close attention to the maid’s face so she would be dealt with later. "Close the doors," she ordered her maids.

Darius smiled despite it being obvious Vivienne was not in the mood. "What is it now that I have done to upset you?"

Vivienne’s eyes opened wide, her brows raised high as she found herself in disbelief. "You need to ask what you have done? Is it not painfully obvious I am upset my husband has avoided me all day or that I found him enjoying the company of a maid? You truly don’t know why I am angry?

"It is not my fault this time. I did not lure the maid in here. I only asked for wine and blood to be brought here then she started to take off her clothing. What was I to do?" Darius asked.

"Send her away you fool. Must you accept anyone who offers themselves to you? Why do you make it so easy for me to be disrespected? She did not move upon my command," said Vivienne, her anger growing with each passing second.

"I will see to it that she is punished for the disrespect," Darius said simply to please Vivienne.

"Save it. The last time you spoke of punishing a lady who disrespected me, I had to worry about an illegitimate heir. You do not know how to control yourself. I will kill all of them. There won’t be a maid left to clean the palace if you keep this up," Vivienne gave a warning. "Why are many of them human?"

"I find myself thirsty. You cannot expect me to drink your blood while we are intimate. It has a horrible taste. I didn’t get to finish. Do you mind?" Darius offered his hand to Vivienne. She was quite the beauty which put him in a mood to continue.

Vivienne wanted to throw the bottle on the table at Darius. "I have not come here to finish what she started. I came to bring your attention to something. Why wasn’t I informed by you that Xavier is getting married? I did not receive an invitation."

"You were not informed because it is not happening. If you heard about him helping Selene, it is a bit drastic for you to speak of marriage. He is infatuated with her and I don’t blame him. She is beautiful," Darius said, the memory of Selene filling his mind.

"I do not need to hear of her beauty from you. He is getting married. My brother informed me of it before I came looking for you. It seems Nathaniel knew of the engagement days ago and called upon his family. Xavier refused to meet with them and is getting married today. Maybe it has already finished,’ said Vivienne.

Vivienne trusted her brother wouldn’t just lie about this.

Darius didn’t believe it. "He couldn’t have done that."

"I knew you wouldn’t believe me so I sent a servant to the court. They are making a record that Xavier is now married to a woman named Selene. It happened today and none of us were informed of it. It is not like him," Vivienne said, confused by all the secrecy.

Darius did not like the look Vivienne had when thinking about Xavier. "Why are you so curious about his wedding?"

"I am thinking about it because it has always been said he would marry your sister. Think of how this will affect her when it reaches her ears. The man she wanted is marrying a woman none of us know of. You should think of comforting her," Vivienne replied.

"That is all? You are not thinking your chance to be with him again has slipped out of your hands? Do not think I have not noticed your curiosity about his life. Stop claiming it to be for my sister. It will upset her if she knows of your feelings and past. I do not believe he has gotten married," said Darius.

Xavier would be taking a joke too far in Darius’s opinion.

Still, Darius laughed. This would be just what he was waiting for to have the families turn to think poorly of Xavier.

"I do not think my brother and the court would lie. They all said he was getting married today and seeing the time it is now, it must have happened already. The Blackthorns are not happy so we should expect to see more of them soon. The families will meet to discuss a husband for your sister. Be ready," Vivienne instructed Darius.

Darius didn’t hear anything Vivienne said since he was focused on thinking about Xavier getting married. He thought Xavier would be smarter than this to marry a girl with parents labelled as traitors. It was funny but at the same time upsetting since it was planned for Xavier to marry the princess.

Darius stood up, no longer in the mood to waste his time here. "When he came with her, he knew he would marry her but didn’t speak a word of it. Of course."

"When did he come? Why does it feel like you are keeping all kinds of secrets from me? You have not told me of meeting with him. Then you wonder why I am upset. We cannot do anything about this now. The princess will need to find someone else to wed. I shall help her," Vivienne offered since the princess would be heartbroken.

"You of all people should not speak about Xavier to my sister. I don’t want you speaking about him to me. I will deal with this. He has finally lost his mind. He won’t grant me entry through his gates so I need a favour from you my dear queen. There is someone you must send an invitation to," Darius said. He gently touched Vivivenne’s face as he spoke.

"You do not want me to speak of him yet you want me to invite him here. What makes you think Xavier will come simply because I ask? It is not him you want here," Vivienne realised after Darius smiled. "Is it her you want?"

"I said she was beautiful. Were you not listening? She only has Xavier to protect her. There is a wonderful way for her marriage to be no more and for everyone to be happy," Darius plotted.

"For that, I need you to invite her and her alone to the palace. It will take some time since Xavier will be suspicious but I am confident you can get her near," Darius said and then kissed Vivienne’s cheek.

Darius walked around his wife to get the bottle of wine he had yet to enjoy.

"What do you intend to do? Bed her as well? That would be foolish. If he loves her-"

"I want to test just that. Does he love her?" Darius wondered.

Vivienne closed her right hand into a fist. "You cannot keep trying to take his things and disrespect me."

Darius’s smile widened. "Can’t I? I got you, didn’t I?"
