Chapter 47: The morning after (1)

Selene stirred around as her body slowly woke to a new day. Her eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the darkness in the room. She immediately froze because of the sight before her.

What she noticed wasn’t that someone had pulled the blinds so there wouldn’t be light let in to bother her. What caught her attention was how close she laid to the man she now had to call her husband.

Selene tried not to panic. If she did then she might wake him and his teasing might be the death of her. Instead of pulling away from him too fast, Selene slowly tried to go back to how they were before when she went to bed with at least an arm’s length of space between them.

What confused Selene even more was her arms hugging Xavier. She couldn’t have been the one who inched closer to him during the night. She wasn’t one to move around in her sleep too much to the point of ending up in his arms. freewebnσvel.cøm

’If only I could just disappear,’ Selene thought.

Since Xavier might soon notice she was awake, Selene tried again to slowly move her arms around him and find her place back to her side of the bed but her attention was brought to the hand which rested on her lower back. It blocked her escape.

"Running already when you were so clingy last night?’ Xavier asked. He opened his eyes, allowing him to witness the sight he had been waiting for. "Good morning, Selene. Sleep well?"

"I wasn’t clingy. Could you please move your hand?" Selene questioned and pulled her hands away from him so she no longer hugged Xavier. "How did we end up like this?"

"You will need to tell me. I am still on my side of the bed if you haven’t noticed. Look," Xavier loosened his hold so she could see.

Selene rolled to see how much space was left on her side of the bed. There was plenty which meant she had moved. "I-," she started but stopped herself. She was thankful she did because of Xavier’s smile. "I never agreed to your punishment."

"Yet you stopped so it is working. You are welcome to apologise and earn yourself a morning kiss. You have a good way of asking for a kiss without becoming embarrassed. You should thank me," Xavier said as his hand crept back to its earlier position.

"I do not understand you. I would understand if you tried to tease me about other things but you act as if you," Selene paused, unable to finish. She didn’t want to start an unnecessary conversation about feelings right after they got married.

"As if I what?" Xavier asked, giving Selene the chance to say what was on her mind.

"It’s nothing. I misread something. It seems to be right that I found my way over to your side. I don’t need to apologise since it is apparent you enjoyed yourself."

Xavier moved his hand so Selene could sit up. "Why do I get the feeling you would love to stick your tongue out at me like a child?"

"I do not want to do that. There is only room for one playful person in this marriage. It is strange," Selene noticed. She sat up to be free of being so close to Xavier. "I know it was coming but it is strange to think of you as my husband. It feels like normal."

Xavier laid on his side to get a better look at Selene. "Perhaps it is because we skipped steps."

Selene glared at Xavier.

"I meant the courting of each other but do tell me what it is you are thinking of," said Xavier.

"You will never be able to fool me, Xavier. At least not from now on. I know your words have other meanings and you want me to say them. It is not going to happen. Ha! You are too slow," Selene cheered, celebrating in her quick speed to get away from him.

"Am I? You will not want me to chase you, Selene. I could catch you if I wanted to," Xavier said, tempted to play the game of cat and mouse.

Selene nodded her head, agreeing with him. "I don’t doubt you would catch me. That is why I will not start a chase. Speaking of this, when will I have my tutor so I can learn how to fight?"

"Soon. We don’t need to rush to deal with everything at once. Our focus now should be to get what is left of your parent’s home and send your relatives away. We’ve spared enough people you dislike so far. Can’t we just kill your relatives so they never show up before us?"

"I think it would be suspicious if they die and my family home falls right back into my hands right after we get married. I must admit there are a few I wanted to hurt over the years and some I would like to kill for how they acted when my parents died but it would cause a lot of trouble if they were killed. Wouldn’t it?" Selene asked.

"It would only be trouble if I am caught. I have never been caught," Xavier replied. He got up from the bed since there wasn’t anything left to do without Selene there.

Xavier pulled his shirt over his head and placed it on the bed.

Selene averted her gaze. She wanted to give Xavier the same respect that he gave her. "I cannot tell if you are joking or serious about not getting caught. You have killed people and hidden them from the town? From the guards and king?"

Before Selene knew it, Xavier crept up on her to be closer.

"How did you do? How did you sneak up on me? I have good hearing," Selene said, suspicious of Xavier suddenly standing beside her. "There is something about you, isn’t there?"

"I’ve already told you a secret for a secret or a secret for a kiss. You decide."

"I am not that curious anymore. Would you like to wash first or can I? I will need to look out to tell the maids to bring us hot water. Agnes should be awake by now," Selene said, excusing herself to go to the door.

Xavier held her hand to stop her. "If you go to her so soon and leave your husband behind, some might think our wedding night wasn’t wonderful."

"I didn’t think you would care about that. Harold assured me that the servants wouldn’t speak of what they see or hear. I think he is too confident since most of the gossip about couples is passed around by the servants who work for them. Regardless of how many rules you make, someone will speak," Selene said, certain it would happen.

"We do not need anyone to be suspicious of the morning after," said Selene, agreed with Xavier.

No one needed to know this marriage wasn’t built on love and question it.

"Then," Xavier had a brilliant plan right away. "It only makes sense for me to mark your skin with my kisses. That would certainly end any gossip that we were not passionate on our wedding night. I will have to put them where it is obvious."
