Chapter 50: Ruined (1)

After breakfast, Selene met with Xavier at the carriage to head to her old family home then they would visit the graves.

Selene was seated beside Xavier since Agnes waited last to enter the carriage giving Xavier the chance to sit beside Selene.

"Have you planned how you will get them to hand over what is to be mine? A plan without violence," Selene said, knowing he intended to hurt someone today.

"A plan without violence is a silly plan. There is always a need for a little violence when we are dealing with greedy relatives. Did you visit them during the time you were married to that man?" Xavier asked, curious about how much Gabriel was able to help Selene.

"I did but it did not change anything. He wasn’t as he is now when we went to visit them but he managed to scare them off from approaching me. I don’t know what else they think I have. Did they want my mother’s brooch I took with me?" Selene wondered.

Her relatives had staked their claim to everything else. Why did they have to be so greedy to want even the clothes off of her back?

"I won’t stop you if you have to harm someone today. I just don’t want violence to be our only plan. They will greet you with open arms because of your status. At least we can be confident we will be welcomed inside. I think my aunt resides there now that my cousin has taken over. I hope they have not ruined it," Selene said, scared to see the inside.

"For everything they have ruined, I will ruin them. It is only fair. You will have good news to share with your parents that you have gotten the home back."

Selene was happy at least one of them was confident about this visit. She was lucky Xavier was here to fill the moments when she was nervous.

After a long ride to her old family home, Selene spotted the home she adored. Already she spotted many changes but they could easily be fixed.

"They will not just hand this home over to us even if you threaten them to. What plan do you have?" Selene asked, needing to know before they entered the home.

Xavier had connections to use. "We will get what is left and then I will deal with getting the home handed over to you. Isaac works in the court. He can find who the home was left to but the only issue is finding where it was noted in the court"

"If your parents knew their deaths were coming, I believe they would have made arrangements for you to inherit the home and everything else," Xavier said.

At the time of deciding who the home would go to, Selene didn’t have anyone at her side to help her learn what was left to her. Xavier didn’t doubt for a second that since she was adored, the home was left to her but her relatives hid proof of it.

"I believe my father would have done that. Days before they were killed, he was the one who kept telling me not to worry about the days ahead. I did not know what he meant then but it seems he knew they were going to die. Those snakes," Selene balled her hands into a fist as she thought about her relatives.

The relatives who once frequented the home and owed her father were the main ones who harassed her for what they figured they could make money from selling.

Xavier placed his hand on Selene’s to calm her. "Save that anger for later. Right now I need you to be calm to tell me who chased you away and bothered you."

"Right," Selene replied. She couldn’t let her anger get the best of her to ruin this trip.

When the carriage stopped, Xavier was the first one to exit and offer his hand to Selene to help her out.

"Has it always been this crowded?" Xavier asked, examining the poor choice of decor in the gardens.

There were terrible statues of who he assumed to be the people who took over once Selene was out of the way.

"That is one of my uncles and the cousin who took over. My mother once had a large flower garden there. I would run around there and my mother would come outside to scold me but then she would pick a flower to place in my hair. The old decor is gone as well," Selene noticed.

What she loved about the garden wasn’t there anymore.

"They have terrible taste," Xavier concluded. "Do not touch anything. We cannot have their habits rub off on you."

Xavier’s words brought a smile to Selene’s face. Only he could make her smile at a time like this.

The door opened revealing Selene’s cousin, the new owner of the house, Trevor Harrison.

The sight of Trevor alone was enough to upset Selene. His eyes went to her for a brief moment before sticking to Xavier. Selene always thought her cousin had a way of finding the wealthiest person in a room to know who he needed to make friends with.

Trevor sought wealth like a moth sought out a flame and he was always burned in the end by his bad decisions.

"This is an interesting but welcomed surprise. Welcome to my home, Lord Blackthorn," Trevor greeted the infamous man. He held out his hand to Xavier for it to be shaken but it was left hanging in the air.

"Not fond of handshakes," Trevor laughed as he lowered his hand. "You came with my cousin. Selene," Trevor addressed the troublemaker. "I thought I wouldn’t see you here anymore."

Trevor didn’t like that the pair were together. The last time Selene came, she caused too much trouble which almost ruined his engagement to a young woman he had been courting for weeks.

"We came to speak about what is owed to my wife," said Xavier.

Trevor looked behind Selene to Agnes who he would have guessed to be Xavier’s wife if not for it coming back to him that this was Selene’s maid. He didn’t want to believe that Selene had attached herself to Lord Blackthorn. Since the rumours came to his doors, Trevor did not want it to be true.

"Wife? Last I heard about my cousin, she was married to a soldier. I thought she was already doing good for herself but now she went and found herself a lord. How lucky you are," Trevor said, a smile on his lips but he was fuming inside.

Did Selene think she could bring Lord Blackthorn and the family would just hand over the home to her? She was sadly mistaken.

Trevor rubbed his hands. While he wanted to send Selene away, his chance of speaking to Xavier was too good to let it slip by. "My cousin must have forgotten she took everything belonging to her and left. There was a tiny issue of her taking what belonged to me as the heir but I let it go."

Selene scoffed. What did he let go? All she had were her dresses and her mother’s brooch yet he and the others kept coming after her, only stopping when she got married.

"She’s going through a lot right now-"

Xavier grabbed Trevor by his shirt to pull him closer. "She’s not the only one going through a lot right now. I am troubled by having you say a lot of nothing despite your mouth moving so much."

If not for Selene needing to speak to Trevor, Xaver would gladly snap Trevor’s neck. "You and your family earned yourself a nice home after you pushed her out of it. Tell me, which fool came up with the plan to hide who the real heir was?"
