Chapter 57: Losing a friend (1)

Selene’s carriage soon arrived at the home of her childhood friend Fiona Carleton. It had been weeks since their last meeting due to both women being busy running their households.

Selene was helped out of the carriage by the guard whose name she learned was Lucas. He was assigned to her by Xavier’s order so she planned to get close.

Lucas scanned the area for danger. Should he let something to the lady and her maid while they were in his watch then he was as good as dead. "I will do a search of the home," he informed Selene.

"Okay. I will be seated with the lady for most of the visit. You can stay near the front if you wish. I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable by having a guard near," Selene replied.

The front door opened before Agnes could knock.

"Selene," Fiona greeted her dear friend. "I have missed you so much."

Selene approached Fiona to hug her. "I have missed you as well. We shouldn’t go too long without seeing each other again. You are glowing," she noticed.

"Me? Look at you. It is just as it said that Lord Blacktorn fell in love overnight," Fiona said, seeing the grand carriage as proof. "This ring is beautiful. It must cost a fortune."

Selene placed her hands back to her side. "It is not important what it costs. If only I could have held it back a little more for you to attend."

"You can’t hold your wedding back for one person. I will do my best to attend whatever you may send an invitation for. Please come inside," Fiona said, leading the way inside.

Fiona regretted with each passing hour that she listened to her husband to not attend Selene’s wedding. Since she could not be there, Fiona had to treat Selene in secret today.

"You still adore flowers," Selene said since she was welcomed by the sight of many paintings of flowers and flowers in vases. "Have you finished the garden you spoke of?"

"No. It will take some time to get it started. There are other things to be worried about than a garden," said Fiona.

Fiona led Selene to the drawing room so they would be away from the flowers. She did not want to speak of the garden she had to do herself instead of hiring someone since money was not coming in as it used to.

It was a great task to prepare the home for Selene’s arrival and Fiona was glad she did her best. Selene wasn’t a simple lady anymore so certain things wouldn’t pass anymore.

"It is small but I hope you are comfortable," Fiona said as Selene took her seat.

"Do not be like that. I have always adored your home. You are not being like this because of my husband, are you? Who I am married to doesn’t change how I have always been with you. I hope you do not think I have changed," Selene said since it would be disappointing.

"I know you aren’t the kind to just change overnight but your husband is a lord. That is such a grand title. You will see riches that I will never see from afar but I am happy for you. It is a step up from your first husband. What happened there?" Fiona asked.

"You did not hear of him returning with a woman? A human at that. Our marriage was over when he did that. What is with that look?" Selene inquired after noticing Fiona react like something wrong had been said.

"What look?" Fiona smiled so what she thought would not be obvious.

"Fiona, we are friends. You can stay what is on your mind," said Selene.

"Well since you have married Lord Blackthorn, your choice to leave was good but I think it was a bit careless. Where would you have gone if you spoke of divorce and there wasn’t anyone to take you as their wife?" Fiona asked. She could not understand Selene’s confidence.

"I had money to find a room for the time being or throw it all to a small home. I found a small room to use but now I live on the Blackthorn estate. I will not lie that I wasn’t scared thinking of where I would go but I knew it was better than staying with him. We should not settle for that," said Selene.

"We are not all confident like you so the way you just up and left confuses some of us. I thought there was more than that woman. I couldn’t be so brave to leave him. It doesn’t matter since you have Lord Blackthorn but something puzzles me. You married so fast," said Fiona.

It could only be assumed that Selene had a relationship with Xavier before her marriage ended.

’It did happen fast but if you wish to ask if I was having an affair, I did not. You know I am not the person to cheat. Cheating is the very reason I left Gabriel. I will not take part in it," Selene responded.

"I see," Fiona replied but she wasn’t easily convinced. Fiona knew her friend well but it was all so quick. "Regardless of how you got together, I am happy that you are not alone and wandering the town. It is not good for any lady to be walking around alone. Even for a pureblood."

Fiona looked at Agnes who stood protective behind Selene. "Where is your other maid? You left her behind today?"

"Elsie was killed by Gabriel. It is only Agnes now," Selene answered.

"Oh dear," Fiona covered her mouth. "Why would he do such a thing? I know how much you loved her. It is good that you got yourself far away from that man. If I ever see him, I might do something."

Selene laughed. "You do not have to. I’m sure he will get what is coming to him. You have prepared much for my visit. I should have brought a gift with me."

"Oh no. It is my time to treat you since I missed your wedding. What would you like? I gave the maids some time off to be with their families so I will serve you. I got everything you might like and some blood," Fiona pointed to it.

"Since you prepared so much, I will have one of everything," Selene decided.

Fiona fixed the plate for Selene and passed it on to her. Afterwards, she picked what she wanted to eat. Fiona avoided looking Selene’s way as the first bite was taken since she was nervous about Selene liking the pastries. It was her first attempt at baking.

"They are lovely," Selene said before taking a second bite.

"They are? I tried my best with them," Fiona said, turning to Selene. "I am glad you like them."

"You did them? I envy how talented you are. Are you learning to bake in your spare time?" Selene asked, thinking of giving herself a hobby for when she needed a distraction.

"I am. It isn’t so bad for a lady to know how to bake," Fiona replied. Her nerves started to settle since Selene didn’t seem to notice her troubles.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t long Fiona got to relax before she heard the front door open and knew it could only be her husband.
