Chapter 66: Help (2)

"I like the red on you. I prefer it more when it shows on your cheeks but it is lovely as the colour of your dress. My mother has impressed me," Xavier said as he looked over Selene from head to toe. "I must be kind to her so she will pick more wonderful dresses."

"You say that now but look," Selene said, turning around so she could show her back.

Xavier frowned when he saw her exposed back. Selene was lucky there was material to cover her buttocks. "She must want all men who see you to die. Why in this world would she pick this kind of dress for you?"

"You just said you like the dress," Selene reminded Xavier. "You dislike it now that my back is exposed?"

"Do not get it confused, Selene. I still love the dress but some heads might roll if anyone were to stare too long," Xavier clarified.

Selene turned so her back wouldn’t be to Xavier anymore. "You are staring too much. Should your head roll?"’

"I am your husband. I am the only one who should enjoy looking. I wouldn’t mind if you were to wear this dress to dinner since it might get more exciting. Are you uncomfortable wearing it?" Xavier asked, noticing her discomfort.

"I am not used to this kind of dress. I have only seen others be so bold to wear it and I do not judge them but it is not for me. The most I would enjoy is one that doesn’t cover my shoulders. Your mother has wonderful taste but I do not want to be a copy of your mother," Selene said, having to let this dress go as well.

Xavier didn’t hide his disappointment that she did not like it but he agreed with Selene not being like his mother. "I would have hated it if you forced yourself to be like my mother. I only need one Josephine in my life."

"I will always remain Selene," Selene promised. ’Some of the dresses I did enjoy but others show too much skin. It is not the time for me to be so bold to wear those dresses but I will not get rid of them now."

Selene keeping the dresses surprised Xavier. "Will you keep them to seduce me one day?" Xavier joked.

"Only if it would work," Selene jokingly replied.

Rather than let Xavier get the best of her with his jokes, Selene was now prepared to join him.

"I will see to it that you understand what it feels like to have someone tease you. You should be afraid of what you started," Selene advised Xavier. "I will get changed back into my dress and then we can speak in private."

Xavier remained on the bed wearing a smile rather than being afraid of Selene throwing back whatever he sent her way. It was about time she showed him just how much she could handle him.

A knock on the door interrupted the good feeling in the room.

Xavier got up to answer the door and send away the person disturbing the peace before Selene returned.

When Xavier opened the door, it was Harold who stood on the other side.

Xavier leaned on the door frame and asked, "Missed me already, Harold?"

"No, Milord. Your father has come again and this time, he brings two of your relatives. Should I let them in or have them leave?" Harold asks.

"My wife is in too much of a good mood after trying on dresses. Send them away and fast if you can," Xavier replied. "Tell my father I will come to see him tomorrow so he doesn’t need to come to my home anymore."

Harold bowed and left Xavier’s side to relay the message he already knew wouldn’t go over well. Harold didn’t understand why Nathaniel continued to use the approach which annoyed Xavier. He could not think of the last day Xavier had welcomed Nathaniel inside the estate and now that Selene was present, that day wouldn’t come soon.

Harold made his way out to the gate where Nathaniel stood with his siblings. Already, he saw Nathaniel’s anger that Xavier was not present. "Lord Blackthorn cannot speak with you at the moment but he is willing to meet with you tomorrow outside of the estate."

"Tell my son to come to me now," Nathaniel ordered Harold.

"I have already passed on that message to him and the lord has declined. Will you accept to meet with him elsewhere or should I inform him that you have no interest in it?" Harold asked.

"You," Nathaniel grabbed the gate, ignoring the pain caused by the iron turning hot. "You will find yourself in a place you won’t be able to get out of if you continue to be this way."

Harold didn’t respond to the threat. He informed Nathaniel numerous times that his loyalty was to Xavier. If that would have him killed at some point then so be it.

"I told you it was a waste of them for you to bring us here, brother. I could have predicted what my nephew would do better than you," said Ragnar Blackthorn, Nathaniel’s younger brother. "You are a lucky father and the others are still asleep or they would be disappointed to see you like this. You don’t have any control of your son."

"Leave him, Ragnar. Our brother already suffers from his wife throwing him out. Tell my nephew we will meet with him tomorrow at the old Blackthorn home. I expect him there at noon. Tell his wife I said hello," said Camilla Blackthorn, Nathaniel’s younger sister. "I can hardly wait to meet her."

Harold left the group to pass on the message to Xavier and warn him that his aunt was in town. Among the siblings, Harold was more worried about Selene meeting Camilla.

Camilla smiled, revealing her broken fangs. "Look at him running, brother. I can feel his fear from here. It is good that you called us here. I can’t wait to see what woman stole Xavier’s heart."

"Do not start sounding like Josephine," Nathaniel said.

Camilla glared at her brother saying something she considered to be rude. "I will never be anything like that wife you took to your side. I am almost tempted to wake father and tell him that you’ve become exactly what I knew you would. You should have listened when we told you to pick another wife."

Camilla saw it as history repeating itself since Xavier didn’t marry who he should have. It was why Nathaniel was so upset about the arrival of the woman inside. "I’m sure father won’t injure you too much if he were to find out you failed. Your punishment might be light."

’As light as having my fangs broken? You shouldn’t smile so much," Nathaniel said, picking at Camilla’s insecurity.

"Now now," Ragnar stood between his siblings. "Now isn’t the time to fight. We’re given a chance to speak to Xavier tomorrow so we can only wait for it. Could you please act like the head of this family and not do anything foolish? Both of you," he looked at Camilla. "I hear the princess has been crying for days now. We must take care of that now."

"And how will you do that? She will not stop crying until she has Xavier and we’ve had trouble getting near his wife. You had plenty of chances to kill her," Camilla said, disappointed Nathaniel allowed it to get so far. "Now look at what this family must deal with."

Nathaniel hated to hear his siblings speak but he needed them around to deal with the other families who were yet to calm down. "Do what you promised me, Camilla. Take care of her."

"I will," Camilla replied. "I won’t miss the chance to make father proud."
