Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord-Chapter 75: Bending rules (4)
Chapter 75: Bending rules (4)
Xavier arrived home shortly after Selene. He sought her out first to hear about her outing and found her standing in their bedroom with a sword in her hands.
Xavier cautiously entered the room. "I was not expecting this when I came looking for you. No one informed me that you were learning how to use a sword."
"I wasn’t," Selene carefully rested the sword against the bed. "I was testing how it would feel to swing it but it belongs to you. I bought it today."
"Me? How thoughtful of you," Xavier replied.
Xavier closed the door and walked to the bed to inspect the sword. "And here I thought you were practising how you would hurt me."
"Hurt you? Why would I think of hurting?" Selene asked, puzzled by his assumption. "Have you done something which requires me to hurt you?"
"No, not at all. I like to think that I have been a good husband. It is a good sword," Xavier said after lifting it. "Does it come with someone to use it on?"
"No. I am afraid you will have to find a target yourself. With all that is happening as of late, it shouldn’t take too long for you to find someone. Did your talk go well? I cannot smell any blood on you," Selene said, taking that as a good sign.
"It would have gone well if they would have dropped it but they are claiming they are willing to give you a chance. Do not get excited because I will not let them get near you. They will still do what they can to send you away and I don’t care for them to accept you. Nothing has changed," said Xavier.
"I see. Well, if they want to act like they will give me a chance then they might leave us alone for a moment. I think it is good so you should find some relief in it. It sounds like your day went far better than you were expecting," Selene said, relieved he had not fought his father.
Xavier placed the sword back where he found it. "And what about you? Was it good for you or were you the centre of attention?" freewёbnoνel.com
"The latter but I learned fast how to ignore it. I was approached by Gabriel’s mother but Lucas was quick to end that. I am happy I do not need to play nice with her anymore. I am lucky no one else approached me," Selene shared.
"And did you get all you needed?"
"I did. The dress I want for the gathering in a few days will need to be altered first but it should arrive by the time I need to leave. Lucas said you arranged for me to look at jewels but I did not go," Selene revealed, hoping he would not be disappointed.
"Had I known you would have reacted this way, I would not have spoken about my interest in you. Is it so bad that I would want to court you? Or is it that you have a hard time believing my interest in you is far more than our arrangement? Tell me instead of running," Xavier said, taking a seat on the bed.
Selene joined Xavier to sit on the bed. "It is both. It came out of nowhere. I am trying to think back to how many times we spoke in the past or is it that your feelings started now? It is all very confusing."
"I have always been curious about you since we were children but you sparked something recently. I might not be in love with you but I have thought of being something more that we started. Nothing will change," Xavier promised so she wouldn’t run from him.
"Well, other than you courting me. It might be a waste of your time now since I am not ready for any of this yet. It is funny since we are married," Selene laughed.
Selene continued, "I know it isn’t possible to stop your feelings so fast so I won’t tell you not to feel what you feel. Just remember it is all sudden for me. I feel relieved now that we have talked about this. It was becoming hard to avoid your eyes."
"And it was fun to be in your sight to see you panic. I will make sure you are not uncomfortable around me but I will try to grow your interest in me. I have a new offer that if you are bored, you may come to me and I-"
"Let us stop there," Selene stood up.
"You don’t know what I was going to say," Xavier replied.
"I know you would say something which sounds one way but has another meaning and you will act like it doesn’t. That will not work on me anymore," Selene said, placing her hand on her hips to show how serious she was.
Xavier held back his laughter since there was a sword nearby.
"I have received other invitations but I have ignored most of them since some are from people who turned their backs on me. For the gathering I will attend in a few days, will you be there? I know that some men attend to have a drink away from the women," Selene said.
"I don’t normally attend. Do you need me there?" Xavier asked since then he would consider going.
"No," Selene sat back down. "I will admit it would be wonderful but I must be without you at some point. I don’t plan to be there for more than two hours so I will make an excuse to return once that time has passed."
Xavier knew there was more on her mind so he asked, "Is there something I need to know?"
"I am wondering if there is something I need to know. I am still certain this invitation was the queen’s doing and she might show up. I am fine hearing about you two but is there anyone else I must know about?" Selene asked.
"No," Xavier replied. "I’m sure there will be some who will try to tell you otherwise. Do you want me to tell you who I have been with? I hope you are not thinking it is a lot."
"I wasn’t," Selene honestly answered.
"Good. I prefer silence and as you will see, many among our kind do not know how to be silent. As soon as we speak, they must let their friends and family know so I am very selective. I will join you if you decide you want me there but you will have to say it," Xavier said, wanting to hear she needed him.
"You don’t have to join me. I know it will only bother you to be surrounded by them but thank you for the offer. It is kind of you. I have bought something else for you. The colors you wear often are dark but I was curious how you would look in a colorful shirt. Where did they put it?" Selene wondered, trying to remember what the maids did with the shirt.
"I did not like bright colours. It makes it harder for me to hunt someone in peace. You wish to make me look like a flower?" Xavier questioned. He did not like it one bit.
Selene laughed as she imagined him as a flower in a vase. He would be the flower which wanted to wither fast. "I’m sure there are dangerous flowers. You will be the prettiest dangerous flower."
"Ha!" Xavier faked a laugh. "I am not wearing it so give it to some poor unfortunate soul."
"You are the soul I have in mind so it isn’t going anywhere. I will hide it until the time comes for you to wear it. It is green like a lively pasture," Selene said, attempting to win him over.
Selene thought Xavier’s mind had changed since he appeared to like the color but his next response made her panic.
"Good. I know what I am looking to destroy."
"No! I will put it elsewhere," Selene said, quickly leaving his side to save the shirt.
