Chapter 104: She’s Gone

Valerio narrowed his eyes at him.

"You’re awfully nervous, and I’m not sure why." He said, "You’ve been working for me for more than three years now, so I’m sure my presence doesn’t make you uncomfortable. Or does it?"

"Of course not, sir." Luca quickly shook his head.

"Then relax." Valerio turned away, making his way to the spiral staircase. He proceeded up to the second floor and the further he walked down the hall, his men bowed to him, not rising until he was out of sight.

The man stopped in front of Evelyn’s door.

His brows furrowed a bit. Something was wrong. He’d been getting that feeling since he stepped into the building.

First with how quiet the house was. And then with Luca acting all strange and nervous.

"Evelyn." He knocked on the door.

There was no response.

"Evelyn," he called again. Still nothing.

Now he was starting to grow annoyed. What the heck was going on? Surely she wasn’t ignoring him, right?

"Evelyn, tell me if I can come in," he said. "You know I have been trying to see to it that you’re as comfortable as you can be, but you’re really starting to push it."

Still no response. Everywhere was deadly silent. He couldn’t even hear any movement sounds that indicated someone was inside that room.

Having had enough of letting her get away with everything just because he loved her, he shoved the door open anyway, rushing into the room.

But to his horror, the room was completely empty.

Evelyn wasn’t on the bed, nor was she even seated on the floor where she usually would be.

No, the room looked as if no one had even occupied it in the very first place.

"Evelyn!" He stormed his way into the bathroom.

"Evelyn!" Jamming open the door of the closet, he didn’t find her there. Where was she?

There was no way she could have escaped and if she did, his men would have immediately reported it to him.

Turning, he stormed out of the room and proceeded down the hall toward the balcony of the second floor to grab one of his men.

"Where is she?" he questioned.

The guard looked at him in confusion. "Sir...w-what do you me—"

"Where the fuck is Evelyn?! Where is she hiding in this house?"

"H-hiding?" The guard shook his head. "Boss, the woman hasn’t stepped out of her room throughout today. She’d been in the bedroom like she always does."

"Then explain to me why she’s missing!" Valerio yelled.

It felt as if every guard was hit with a bomb.

The woman he’d brought with him, missing? He would kill them. They weren’t sure what it was or even why, but he seemed awfully obsessed with her in a way that was almost terrifying.

If she were truly missing, they didn’t want to begin to imagine what he was going to do to them.

"B-boss." Another one of the guards walked up to him, bowing. "Maybe she left the room and is lost in one of the rooms in this mansion. It is a big mansion after all. She’s not missing, we’re sure of that."

The guard he had by the collar nodded. "We’ve been on guard the entire day and none of us has left our spot. If she’d tried to escape in any way, we would have known immediately."

"It’d better be true!"

Valerio looked murderous, roughly letting go of him with a shove.

"Scour the entire parts of this mansion and find her for me. If you don’t, consider yourselves dead."

"Yes, sir!" They all nodded in unison.

The search for Evelyn began.

Valerio was anxious out of his mind, unable to keep himself from pacing back and forth in the hallway.

Rationally, there was no possible way Evelyn could have escaped from this house, so it was either that she was somehow lost in one of the rooms like they said, or...

Narrowing his eyes, he walked closer to the balcony and glanced into the kitchen where Luca stood at the counter, slicing through the onions with strangely shaky hands.

What was going on with him?

The Luca he knew was always very calm, cold, and barely ever spoke. Even as he was his boss, he didn’t speak to him much, other than to obey his orders and do them as he asked.

What was causing him to sweat as if he were held at gunpoint? What was causing him such nervousness?

Growing too suspicious, Valerio left the balcony and proceeded down the stairs towards Luca where he was now facing the cooking gas in the kitchen.

"Luca."

Luca jumped a bit at his name. His lashes flickered and he swallowed hard, though his mouth felt dry and his throat felt as if he’d swallowed sawdust.

Valerio leaned against the door, folding his arms.

He asked, "What is going on with you?"

Luca’s fingers tightened around the spoon he held and he tried his best to comport himself, slowly but turning to stare at Valerio.

He forced himself to smile.

"What do you mean, Sir?"

Valerio’s eyes narrowed. Yeah, Luca didn’t smile. The man wasn’t the type who ever did. Not even when one makes a joke around him.

What was he holding that fake smile on his face for?

What the hell did he do?

He pulled himself off the door.

"Luca, haven’t you heard?"

"Heard what, sir?"

"Evelyn is missing. I was yelling upstairs just a few minutes ago," Valerio said, folding his arms. "Were you aware she’s missing?"

"Missing?"

Luca swallowed.

"No. I mean...how would I know? I only ever see her when I take her food to her, and as you can see boss, I am yet to be done with cooking ."

"Is that so?" Valerio took a step forward. "You don’t seem shocked that she’s missing. You’ve given me no emotions almost as if you knew...she was gone."

"That’s not—"

"Sir!!" Some of the guards rushed into the kitchen.

"What?"

Valerio turned to face them.

"Did you find her?"

"No sir." They shook their heads. "She’s not in this mansion. She’s gone!"
