Chapter 148: Gender Revealed

When the man pointed a gun at the back of Charles’s head, he arose and emerged, cursing and in excruciating pain from his shoulder.

"If something unusual happens, my girlfriend might want to know. She was the last phone number I dialed before I hung up the call." Charles told him to his partner as they walked to the car.

In order to prevent him from driving while injured, his partner instructed him to sit in the passenger seat.

On the heels of being inspected and treated in the emergency department, Charles was also required to make a report about being shot at and hit while on duty. They rode all the way back to the station where they had dropped the suspect. The part of his job that he loathed the least, despite the fact that he didn’t get involved in many fires, made him sigh.

Despite the fact that doctors had successfully removed the bullet and mended him, he still had to be held for a few more hours before he could be released. As soon as he was cleared to return to work following his discharge, he got to work on the necessary documentation. Right now, all he cared about was taking in her gorgeous chocolate-brown features.

Sharon arrived a few minutes later and appeared to be in a state of extreme emotional distress. Inquiringly, "Are you Okay?"

"I’m going to live, for sure. Don’t worry, two days on painkillers and I’ll be good as new," Charles smiled and pulled her in for a kiss. "Please accept my sincere gratitude for your presence here. You add to the pleasure of lying in this bed."

"What a surprise, you’re one of those!" She smiled as she rubbed his arm with her thumb.

"You know, it’s absurd, I don’t know. When I hear that you’re in pain while you’re here, I’m a little frightened."

"I’m fine, thank you." In his presence, she felt safe and secure. "What were you up to today, by the way?"

"An unknown woman has asked to take pictures of her cat, and she has an appointment this afternoon. Photographing proms was followed by a trip to photograph the natural world." Sharon’s grin spread across her face. "The majority of my time is spent with puppies and baby."

"It seems to me that I’m not stopping you from doing anything. It seems like you’ve had a full day." Charles asked if she had any other work to do instead of keeping her waiting.

Sharon kissed his head tenderly and whispered, "No, there’s nowhere I’d rather be than right here with you. Until around dinnertime, I have a couple more hours before my appointment."

Charles murmured, "Good," as he watched the nurse approach through the glass door. Despite the fact that she was holding a needle, she gave him a half-smile.

"There are painkillers. Even though it may put you to sleep, the doctor will allow you to drive home tonight if you get some shut-eye afterward." Her next step was to administer the medicine after verifying his patient information.

"I’ll drive him back, nurse. Just text me and I’ll be on standby to come grab you," Sharon advised him. To help him fall asleep, she stayed by his side till the prescription took effect.

When she returned a few hours later to take him home, she realized that she had been his only visitor. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

His items were carried to his car by her, but she did nothing to defend him when a nurse insisted on pushing him to the car in a wheelchair.

"My shoulders were shredded, but my legs were in fantastic shape", he grumbled to himself and the nurse ignored him, telling him that she wouldn’t lose her job because of his pride and that the painkiller could cause him to walk unsteadily and that it was a hazard.

Almost managing to fight back a smile before he turned to look at her and threw her a sneer. "Wait till you’re pregnant and forced to use a wheelchair when you just want to stroll," he warned.

"It’s time to talk about buying a house together when you’re feeling better, right?" he remarked as he entered her apartment.

"My lease on my current apartment is coming to an end, and the real estate market isn’t too bad for me to buy a house now."

While driving back from the drugstore, she handed him a prescription and added, "Let’s talk about it in the morning when you’re feeling better," to which he agreed.

He sat down on the couch and allowed her to bring him some water to take the tablets with after telling her, "I’m not an invalid."

"No, but because you were shot, it’s fine to take a few days off to rest and recoup." She spoke to him in a low voice. "Once you’ve recovered, you’ll be able to brag about how tough you were to your pals."

"No, I’ll be talking about how my sexy girlfriend worried about me and took care of me and I let her," he said, groaning and smacking his shoulder on the couch’s back as he shifted.

After seeing him try to get comfortable, she said, "Let me get you a couple of pillows," with a grimace. "Alternatively, you might join me in bed and stay there with me for the duration of our time together."

Charles whispered, "Your cat will lay on my head."

The cat snuggled up to Sharon and began to purr, making Sharon laugh. She had gone to the store and bought him pillows and a blanket so that he would be able to rest more comfortably.

If he was worried about the cat, she could have barred him from the room, but lying in the open made him an easier target. Despite her skepticism, she continued to edit the photos while keeping a close eye on him. The nurse had promised to keep an eye out for fevers and other problems for the first few days. She was so concerned with her work and her son that she nearly forgot about him.

After a few weeks, they headed to the ultrasound to find out the baby’s gender. Despite the fact that they hadn’t yet found a place they both felt at home in, they were growing more and more inseparable every day and night they spent together.

"It’s a girl!" There were three lines that reflected each person’s gender that were clearly portrayed by the technology.

"A daughter," Charles replied, his voice quivering with terror. After thinking about chasing off boys, smoothing ponytails and fluffing their skirts, his gulped a hard swallow hard.

Sharon gave him a big grin as she looked at him.

"If we want to find a home, we might as well get down to work now." Charles flashed a grin and spoke something in her ear. "When it came time to raise a girl..." he was a little nervous. Sharon was taken aback by what he said next, and he was taken aback as well. "She’ll need a sibling. In any case, I know how to deal with males when they approach me."

"Woah! How about we eat this one first before we start talking about anything else?" Sharon exclaimed with wide eyes.

Charles put her hand on her belly and kissed her, not knowing where the thought had come from at that point in time.

"Will you marry me?" He poked a few questions at her. However unromantic his method of proposing was, it seemed right as he placed his palm on her belly and gazed down at her. In certain cases, timing and context were more important than anything else.

Despite the fact that she was apprehensive about how quickly things were progressing, Sharon gave him a short nod before blinking. She wanted to believe that everything would work out like in a fairy tale, but she couldn’t let go of her doubts.

When they returned home, he pulled out a stack of flyers he had saved to show her listings in more desirable areas. As he shrugged, she accepted the gifts he gave her.

"If you’d like to see any of them, just let me know. If you’re not interested in any of these, we can keep looking. Let me know what you need done and I’ll be happy to help out." Charles said to her in a whisper. Because of the gravity of the issue, he was unsure of how he would respond if she declined his offers of assistance. He had never felt this way before.

Whenever Charles saw Sharon sobbing over the papers, he was torn between giving her a hug and taking a step aside. As a result, he just stood there, waiting for her to tell him what to do while he stares at her. He continued to hug her closely while caressing her back and remained silent while she sobbed some more. He didn’t want to say anything for fear of making her cry even more.
