Bizarre Realm-Chapter 378 - 28: First Blood! (Part 3)
On the other side of the slums.
Three Guards were dragging a laborer’s corpse, walking out, when suddenly the sound of crying erupted. A woman’s figure stumbled forward, followed by a young child. Unlike the other yellow and emaciated people nearby, the woman and child had a hint of blood color on their faces. They stared at the man’s blood-covered corpse, momentarily frozen in place.
Clang!
The obese Guard drew his weapon and slapped the woman who lunged forward to the ground, a gush of blood instantly flowed from the woman’s forehead.
A Guard stopped the woman, glanced at the time, and said in a deep voice, "Hurry up and deal with the corpse."
The other two Guards nodded, turned, and dragged the corpse towards the Great Tomb.
The woman lay helplessly on the ground, watching her husband’s corpse being dragged away. She curled up on the filth-covered ground, tears having long blurred her eyes.
No one knows how much time had passed.
She slowly crawled up, her expression numb, reaching out to take the hand of the crying child beside her. Without expression, she walked towards the slums. After passing through a crooked and filthy alley, the woman pushed open the door of their hut. This simple little room was only about ten square meters, and everything was piled together. On a worn-out table were pots and bowls, with leftover porridge mush inside, and some residue obviously scavenged from scraps.
"Eat up."
The woman picked up a bowl, serving the young child a little food. Her desolate eyes glanced outside at the neighbors who were watching with hollow expressions.
Creak.
She slowly closed the door.
The woman stepped by step walked to the corner of the kitchen, reached out, and opened a broken earthen jar. Inside was a stench of blood; under a layer, some furry animal corpses could be seen, with traces of having been processed for consumption. It was her husband’s food; he wouldn’t let her and the child eat it, but he had consumed a lot.
She grabbed a rat’s corpse and started gnawing on it, her despairing and hollow eyes full of pain, blood dripping down her mouth.
At some point, she gripped a small knife.
"Mama! ... eat..." The young child, unaware of what had happened, tremblingly held a broken bowl, offering the food inside to her.
The woman, with blood on her mouth, raised her head in astonishment; there seemed to be a dying glimmer in her dead, gray eyes.
The putrid stench flowed out of the shabby hut.
Just when others thought another person couldn’t make it, the tightly closed front door slowly opened again. The woman held the young child by the hand, knelt before the neighbors, trembling blood-stained hands forcibly pressing the child’s head down, pressing it into the dirt around, making him kneel before these people.
She was begging for a way to survive for the child.
Great Tomb.
The two Guards dragged the man’s corpse all the way to the Great Tomb. The sewers inside couldn’t hold any more. There had been a serious problem; rats running rampant, maggots, flies, cockroaches, and so on. The denizens of the slums, not knowing better, ate them, and some went mad immediately.
"Bury it directly? Or burn it?" an obese Guard turned and said.
Twilight gradually darkened.
The other Guard wiped the sweat, unfastening the armor straining his bulk, saying, "Bury it directly, what if it gets dug up again?"
"It’s getting dark!"
The obese Guard said, "Then burn it, you go find firewood."
Night slowly descended.
At some point, a chilly breeze swept through the eerie cemetery. The man’s corpse carelessly tossed on the ground suddenly twitched. The next second, he opened his eyes, filled with a murky yellow, full of bloodlust and madness. He instantly climbed up, sharpened nails on both hands grabbing the Guard’s neck. Blood oozed, his mouth full of sharp teeth bit into the Guard’s stout neck.
"Where are they?"
A few minutes later, the other Guard returned, perplexedly surveying around, and was instantly knocked to the ground by a foul-smelling shadow.
Hunger doesn’t disappear with Death.
