"-was no one keeping guard? Or did something happen there as well? Should we...What are you both doing here? Where is Shuu-"

Nero was talking to the guards when he suddenly felt someone grabbing his pants. He looked down, only to see Caelis and Rin.

Their presence made Nero frown, mainly because he had not felt their presence, and being suddenly touched made him react badly. Luckily, he managed to catch himself at the last second and not hurt the kids.

"It’s Nero-!"

"Nero-!"

The two kids said at the same time, one with a confident face and the other with a shy one. Nero sighed as he picked up the kids and noticed Shuu as well.

"I-I am sorry. These two decided to come here without telling me. What is going on here?"

Shuu asked as he looked at all the uncomfortable guards looking back at him and the kids. He could tell that he was not welcomed here, but he still decided to come here, and it was all because of the kids.

Nero did not look happy to see him here, but he did not tell Shuu to go back immediately. He took a look around before he gestured for Shuu to follow after him.

"Stay close to me for now. I will take you back once the basic investigation here is done."

Nero did not tell Shuu what was going on here, and Shuu did not ask either. He figured that he would be told if it was something important. And if not, then it was none of his concern anyway.

He relaxed, and the kids joined him quickly. But just because he was relaxed did not mean that the guards were relaxed as well.

His presence seemed to have sparked anxiety among the guards, and they kept looking at him once in a while to make sure he was fine.

Nero must have noticed this as well, but he neither said anything to the guards nor did he say anything to Shuu. He continued to look after the place, and only after he was satisfied did he step away.

"Alright, we are done here. Shuu, I will accompany you back now."

Nero told Shuu as he held his hand out. Shuu allowed Nero to help him up and followed after him.

The guards looked at him with uncertain eyes, but Nero quickly covered him from behind so that no one would be able to take a look at him. They returned to the imperial palace in total silence and ran into Lady Canarie and Princess Danielle immediately.

Both Caelis and Rin ran behind him to hide from the two, and no one said anything for a moment.

Finally, Lady Canarie stepped out first, and she ignored Shuu and Nero in favor of greeting the kids.

"Hello, Prince Caelis, Young Master Rin. It is my pleasure to run into you both like this. Here, why don’t you have some candy? I ordered it especially from my hometown."

Lady Canarie kept her smile, but a whole minute passed and nothing happened.

The kids neither reached for her outstretched hand nor did they say anything to her. They just tugged at Shuu’s pants, reminding him that they were there.

The longer this went on, the more humiliated Lady Canarie felt. But despite this, she kept her composure, and the smile on her face did not fade.

Finally, Shuu decided to reach for the candy and pick it up.

"Thank you for offering the kids this special treat, Lady Canarie. I am sure they both will be delighted to have some."

Shuu assured as he opened the wrapping and gave the candy to the kids.

Caelis and Rin had a small bite but immediately spit it out.

"It tastes weird. I don’t like it."

Caelis protested with an annoyed look on his face, and even Rin agreed. This was highly unusual for Rin to do since he tended to eat anything and hardly showed his dislike.

Seeing their reaction made Shuu wonder what kind of candy this was, and he took a small bite as well.

Bitter and sour tastes hit his tongue immediately, and they were strong enough to make him cringe.

’H-How strong...! How can Lady Canarie even give something like this to the kids? Is this some kind of punishment?’

Shuu wanted to ask, but the look on Lady Canarie’s face held him off. She looked devastated at the reaction she had gotten for her candy.

"W-Was it really that bad? I-I made that batch myself and I-"

Tears were forming in Lady Canarie’s eyes immediately, and she looked like a bullied mistress to anyone that saw her at the moment. Even the maids and other officials were looking at her with pity.

Shuu suddenly felt tired, and he wanted to get away from these looks.

"I am sorry, but I am suddenly not feeling well. I would like to take my leave now."

Shuu did not want to escalate the situation and decided to grab the kids and leave. He did make sure to give the candy back to Princess Danielle before he left.

Lady Canarie kept looking at Shuu’s back with a wronged look and decided to complain to her cousin.

"Companion Shuu is so mean. He must have taught the kids to be mean to me as well so that he won’t lose his position. But I will show him...I will win those kids over-"

Princess Danielle let out a frustrated sigh at her cousin’s actions.

She knew Shuu well, so she also knew that Shuu was not the kind of person who would overreact like that just to put her down. So she decided to taste the candy as well.

A bitter and sour taste hit her tongue as well, and Princess Danielle almost coughed and showed her true expression. But thankfully, all her training kicked in, and her gift made sure she would not show anything on her face.

’This taste...No wonder those kids and even Shuu reacted like that. Just where on earth did Canarie make something like this?’

Princess Danielle decided to ask Canarie, but she did not dare ask her in the open where everyone could hear.

But before that, she needed to get rid of all of Lady Canarie’s secret stash of candy. She could not afford to let it fall into someone else’s hands.
