"You can collect your last payment from the head maid. I will inform her myself that you all were fired and for what reason."

Those were Kaiden’s last words, but the maids were not done begging yet.

Seeing how they were not able to move the Emperor’s heart, they decided to go with someone else who could help them out. Their eyes turned toward Shuu and they immediately grabbed his legs.

"Companion Shuu, you forgive us, right? You won’t allow us to come to harm, right?"

The maids asked in a desperate voice. They were looking at Shuu as if he was their last hope and Shuu was beginning to feel a little awkward.

He wanted to take a step back, but there was nowhere to go back but Kaiden’s chest. And Shuu was already pressed so hard against that chest that he could feel Kaiden taking every single breath behind him.

"Companion Shuu, you won’t abandon us, right?"

The maids begged and Shuu instantly wanted to close his eyes so that he no longer had to see that expression. It was all just a little too much for him currently.

"I...this is..."

Shuu tried to speak, but no words came out of his mouth.

’Ah, so the maids decided to finally acknowledge us? And all it took was for the emperor to say a few words in our favor. It pleases us...but that is not enough, right? It is far from enough for all the trouble they put us through. Are we just going to forgive them?’

That voice inside Shuu’s head was the clearest it had ever been. It was overwhelming and the words it spoke echoed inside his mind.

He felt like he was being cornered from all sides and his head throbbed. But he was currently in a position where he did not want to show any weakness.

While he was going through this crisis, one of the maids decided that it would be alright to grab his leg and beg for herself.

"C-Companion Shuu, please have mercy. I have old parents and I-"

Shuu’s body reacted before his brain could catch up and his leg hit the lady grabbing his leg. And despite Shuu’s weak kick, the maid made a show of being kicked quite far and then pretending to be injured.

"O-Ouch-! C-Companion Shuu...why...M-My chest..."

The maid grabbed her chest and it was not even the place Shuu had hit her. The maid was clearly acting but Shuu still felt a little guilty.

His actions reminded him too much of the bullying he had experienced before in his life and his heart felt like it was sinking inside his chest. Breathing was hard as Shuu tried his best to keep himself afloat. But it was so hard and- 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

"Don’t think much about it. I will take care of all this. You should go and sit down on the sofa."

A hand covered Shuu’s eyes and Shuu felt like he was being moved somewhere. He did not know whether it was his own will or not since he felt numb at the moment.

Shuu did not dare open his eyes even when that hand pulled away and he heard footsteps walking away from him.

Finally, the door closed and it was all quiet around him once more. But the sensation of his foot hitting something was very vivid in his mind.

’It felt good to let our anger out. We need to do it more often. We were made to fight in war and our blood yearns for it. You yearn for it as well, right?’

"You...are not me, right? At first, I thought you were my inner self, but you feel like a completely different person at times. Just who...or what are you?"

Shuu finally questioned. He just wanted to know what that voice speaking in the back of his mind was.

At first, there was no reply and that made him feel a little discouraged. But then he heard it-that small scoff of laughter that slowly got louder and louder.

’Ah, so you finally caught on to the truth, right? But why does it matter whether I am you or not? I have always acted in your benefit and told you nothing but the truth. But since you discovered me, I will have to disappear now.’

The voice did not speak more. So, was it gone?

Of course not. It spoke just seconds later.

’But before that, I will tell you one last truth...about who you are and why you are here. Perhaps, that would change your mind about staying by the Emperor’s side.’

The voice told Shuu and he had a few seconds to brace himself before his mind was pulled somewhere.

’Don’t panic. I am not here to harm you. I just want you to see the truth and know that I was not lying to you.’

The voice told Shuu and the world around him slowly started to take shape.

He could make out a battlefield where someone who looked like him was fighting on one side and someone that looked like Kaiden was fighting on the other side.

It was an intense fight where both fighters intended to hurt each other and no one held back. Shuu tried to get closer and he could finally hear the words being spoken as well.

"Tsk, is that all you got, Goddess’s loyal hound? Then, shall we end this all? I will make sure to grant you death for all you have done."

Kaiden’s voice sounded colder and deadlier than Shuu had ever heard before. But he had no doubt that the voice belonged to his companion.

The person who looked like him remained quiet, but got into a fighting stance and the next second, the two fighters struck each other near the heart.

"You are not welcome here, demon-"

"If I am not welcomed, then neither are you. Why don’t we fall into oblivion together? I will make sure to seal you for all eternity-"

The space distorted around the pair and Shuu. He wanted to see more, but the space was falling apart.

"No wait-! Don’t collaps...."
