Chapter 4: Military Dorms

Originals was the term to identify families who learned abilities. At least, that’s what the word meant during the first Dalki war. Nowadays, nearly everyone had abilities, save for those who couldn’t afford to buy one, and Originals meant families that had decided to keep their powers secret.

Because they had access to someone who could teach them an ability from a young age, Originals were often able to surpass the typical ability measuring system, going beyond that of your typical level 8.

With the news that Fex was somehow one of these originals, Erin decided to pay a bit more closer attention to how he fared.

Winding up his fists, Fex casually punched the drum, and the number rose up to a 20.

"Huh? Just how is he getting such a high number?" the brunette girl commented.

Then, when it came to the final test, Fex was dodging the holographic spikes far better than Erin did. Even when the machine sped up, he continued to dance around the spikes like they were nothing. After 10 total minutes of jumping around, Fex yawned, before a spike hit his heel, ending the test.

"Looks like you have the score of a..." Jane began, before she squinted much more closely at her clipboard, then at Fex’s watch. It was the first time any of them had seen her display an expression aside from neutral.

"Well, I was going to say a level 7 ability, but your watch appears to state a level 1," Jane noted.

Everyone around Fex was more than confused, including Erin herself.

"Why does his watch state a level 1? I thought us level 1s don’t have an ability?" the curly haired boy asked. "And he did so well on the test too!"

The brunette shrugged, "I’m not sure myself, but I think I have an idea. The watches measure your MC count, aka, the amount of Mutant Cells in your body. It’s possible that he doesn’t have a lot of Mutant Cells, but he’s able to use them in a very efficient way."

The curly haired boy looked closely at Fex, and placed a hand on his chin, "Hmm, do you think he used his strings on the drum when we weren’t looking? Like he pulled on the string somehow, causing his arm to hit to the drum really fast."

"His strings are really thin, they’re basically invisible to the eye unless the sun shines on it in the right way," the brunette replied. "Maybe he did the same thing for the third test? But instead of moving his fist, he pulled his body."

Before they could chat any further, the hooded man by Jane’s side had placed his hands on the ground, teleporting them back onto the school’s campus. They were greeted by the building’s giant form, and 10 teachers standing in a row at the entrance.

The teachers weren’t the only ones there as there were also all the other students who had just finished their ability level testing. Looking around, Erin noted that she was in a group of 20 students, standing in front of a middle aged teacher with curly blonde hair, and glasses.

"Welcome everyone! My name is Del, and I’m your homeroom teacher. Today, you all need to follow me as I take you around the school!" the teacher with the curly blonde hair said with a wide smile.

The group of 20 students began following him as he walked around the various rooms and buildings of the academy. He was explaining everything with a very cheerful voice, one that was getting to Erin a little. Was he not aware that there was an intergalactic threat to humanity right at this very moment? How could he be so happy?

"You guys should start to get to know each other as much as you can," Del said. "After all, the people you are with will be your classmates."

As soon as he said that, the group of students began to get chattier with one another. Quite a few level 3s and 4s pushed their way to get to Erin, but she walked away from them, trying to shake them off.

’These guys won’t leave me alone,’ Erin thought.

That wasn’t the only thing that was happening, as the only three level 1s in that group of students were now suddenly left to their own devices, pushed to the back of the class. The level 1s being Quinn, the curly haired boy, Fex, the boy with slicked back hair, and Peter, a scrawny boy with black hair that had grown out to his shoulders.

"I should’ve expected that this would happen," Quinn dryly commented.

"Why are they avoiding all of us like we smell or something," Fex asked the two boys next to him. Just in case, Fex lifted up his arm and sniffed his pit. "Nah, that can’t be it, I smell like roses."

Peter kept his head down, but he still wanted to reply to Fex, "It’s because we’re weak, no one wants to be friends with a level 1."

"It’s an unspoken rule that you have to kiss up to those higher than you, but there’s no one below us. Look, see?" Quinn added, pointing at the students doing that very thing.

"Oh don’t be such a downer," Fex said with a smile, placing his arm on Peter’s and Quinn’s shoulders. "Who cares about some stupid rules? I never liked following them anyways. Let’s all be friends just to spite them."

"R—really?" Peter said, shocked.

Fex nodded with a smug smile.

Del’s class continued his tour of the school, and they were shown a variety of different places. A battle arena, gyms that had the same testing equipment that the wasteland had, and all the different kinds of classrooms. There were their homeroom classes, and the battle classes.

Next, they had reached the library, a grand place with books as far as the eye could see.

"The library here is split into three floors as you can see. First-year students are only able to access the first floor, second year students can also go on the second floor, and finally, the last for is only for Military personnel."

As Quinn was looking at all of the books, he was wondering if there was perhaps a chance for him to research something about his own family’s ability book. Meanwhile, Erin was looking at the round tables with yellow spheres in the center of them.

’I see, they have silencing orbs,’ Erin thought.

Silencing orbs were a technology that wasn’t very widely open to the public, but they were still available for private schools. It allowed for people to sit around a table, and speak as much as they wanted without anyone else hearing what they were saying outside of it. The tech was great for studying in groups

At long last, the tour was coming to an end and the group stopped just outside of the school dorms.

"And this is where you will be living at during your stay here. Once you have dropped off your things, and have your dorm room assigned, you are free to explore around the academy!" Del began with his usual cheery smile. "There will be no lessons today, so you will get to have the rest of the afternoon to explore."

Once each of the students were handed a piece of paper with a number on them, it would indicate what dorm room they were assigned to.

Erin got hers, and went to her new dorm room. It was a room with three single beds, a desk, an empty shelf, a walk in kitchen, and a single bathroom. Aside from these things, the place was otherwise empty.

As she dropped off her things, there was a brunette girl, and a girl with dark purple hair enter the room.

"Oh, its you from the test earlier!" the brunette girl said, holding up a hand. "Hi, my name is Layla."

Erin looked at the hand, then placed a sword on her shoulder, ignoring it. Then, she left the room heading to the gym.

"Does she seriously not remember me?" Layla sighed. "I hope she doesn’t cause trouble as a roommate."
