Bought For A Baby, Kept For A Lifetime-Chapter 33: Dare To Run
"Director Sterling, here’s your coffee." Cynthia, the young secretary, entered the office and dropped the coffee as usual. She had just been about to leave when the man slammed the cup of coffee down and said with distaste in his voice,
"Bland. Make another one."
Cynthia was a bit taken aback. She had been making his coffee for a very long time and she had never gotten it wrong, but she didn’t think too much of it. She knew Director Sterling was a picky man. Maybe her hand had slipped and she’d added more or less sugar than she was supposed to.
Cynthia remade his coffee more perfectly this time and returned to the office. Not long after, the cup was slammed onto the table again.
"Too cold. Another."
Cynthia’s eyes turned incredulous. She almost exclaimed and told the man that it took the exact same time every day to make his coffee and it had never come cold before, but she knew that would be literal suicide. The man seemed to be in the worst mood, obviously, and even if he weren’t, she wouldn’t dare open her mouth to say such a thing to him.
Cynthia made another cup, but she had no idea it was the start of a back-and-forth journey of making coffee over and over again.
By the time she realized it was more than the tenth cup, Cynthia was exhausted.
The man pushed aside the cup of coffee, this time refusing to even taste it.
Of course, a little secretary had no right to complain. But she had barely gotten a few seconds of rest when she was alerted of a meeting she had to follow her boss to. She instantly sprang up to her feet, running after the man, trying hard to catch up to him.
When they reached the meeting room, many of the managing directors were already seated.
Andrew listened coldly to one person’s complaints of the directorial benefits. This wasn’t an unusual occurrence at these meetings. Many would try to negotiate their way into increasing the benefits they received from the company.
Cynthia was surprised to see Andrew listen silently. When this person was done talking, Andrew calmly signed onto a certain paper on the table. When he raised his head, he addressed the person who was just fishing for benefits.
"I believe every man deserves what they’ve worked hard for. Since you want more benefits, I’m sure you wouldn’t mind the few changes I’ve made." Andrew slid the paper in front of him towards the man, who instantly sprang to his feet after reading it.
"Transfer? I’ve been transferred to SE branch in the south?"
Everyone sucked in a sharp breath.
The branch of Sterling Enterprises in the south was the hardest branch for anyone to survive. It was the biggest type of demotion in a prestigious company like this—in other words, an absolute nightmare for every employee who finds themselves plunged there.
The victim found himself on the verge of tears. He couldn’t just accept such a fate. Of course, he regretted even saying anything in the first place. If it were Gabriel Sterling, the latter would have peacefully told them to be patient and they would receive a benefit raise, but this person...
No wonder he was called the beast of the business world. He wasn’t just firm and decisive when it came to business; he was also ruthless.
"Mr. Sterling, why am I being demoted? I merely spoke up for the benefits of my colleagues."
Andrew raised his head with a calm look on his face. "Complaining about benefits that give you a hefty yearly bonus, all-paid vacations, and every other incentive employees in this country dream of—is that you being magnanimous to your colleagues, or is it greed?"
The man’s face showed a guilt he couldn’t hide away.
It was true that once someone got used to the taste of paradise, they would start to want more and more. The human mind was designed to seek more of anything good it encountered. The employees of Sterling Enterprises already had the best, but of course, over time they craved even more.
"This isn’t a demotion, Johnson. Take this as an opportunity to prove your loyalty to this company. Maybe then you’ll deserve the added benefits you asked for."
In truth, the transfer letter had been meant for someone else. In fact, Simon Johnson could see someone else’s name, which had been cancelled, and below that, his name was written in ink by this demon of a man.
This was far beyond bad luck—this was the misfortune of the century.
The man’s lips trembled, but he couldn’t find words to say.
Why? Just why had he opened his mouth to try and negotiate with the devil today?
Cynthia could only shake her head in sympathy for the man. Who told him to speak up today of all days when her boss was in the foulest mood? She took a serious note to herself not to make any mistakes today in order not to suffer a fate equally as terrible as this Simon Johnson had.
Cynthia watched Andrew proceed to do his job with a firm strictness that sealed everyone’s mouths.
Just what managed to annoy this man today? It became a mystery she could never figure out.
When the meeting ended, Cynthia followed after him as usual. However, instead of going back to his office, they were heading to the elevator to go to a lower floor.
Cynthia knew his schedule, and there was currently nowhere else he had to be, so where was he going?
Though she wondered, she couldn’t ask. What happened to Simon Johnson was certainly a lesson she held onto and silently followed behind him.
When they arrived at the thirtieth floor, she followed him out of the elevator until he stopped outside a certain department.
Cynthia frowned in curiosity.
Why had he come to the Public Relations department? He obviously had no current work related to this department at the moment.
But of course, she kept her curious questions to herself, but she seemed to notice a sharp look had shown on her boss’s face.
It was as if this particular department, or someone in it, was his sworn enemy he wished to destroy. At the same time, another look in his eyes she couldn’t name made her feel like this person couldn’t possibly be an enemy.
Andrew caught himself at the entrance of the Public Relations department.
What the hell?
Why the heck had he come here?
It felt like his feet had brought him here without his consent.
Just when he turned to leave, the flash of that moment Anne had seen him with fear in her eyes and immediately turned to flee came back to him, and he halted.
Without a second thought, he entered the department.
She dared to run from him? He’d like to see how she’ll have the nerve to run now.
